ECCE sensitivity studies for single hadron transverse single spin asymmetry measurements

Here, we performed feasibility studies for various single transverse spin measurements that are related to the Sivers effect, transversity and the tensor charge, and the Collins fragmentation function. The processes studied include semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The data were obtained in pythia6 and geant4 simulated e+p collisions at 18 GeV on 275 GeV, 18 on 100, 10 on 100, and 5 on 41 that use the ECCE detector configuration. Typical DIS kinematics were selected, most notably Q 2 >1 GeV 2 , and cover the x range from 10 -4 to 1. The single spin asymmetries were extracted as a function of x and Q 2 , as well as the semi-inclusive variables z, which corresponds to the momentum fraction the detected hadron carries relative to the struck parton, and P T , which corresponds to the transverse momentum of the detected hadron relative to the virtual photon. They are obtained in azimuthal moments in combinations of the azimuthal angles of the hadron transverse momentum and transverse spin of the nucleon relative to the lepton scattering plane. In order to extract asymmetries, the initially unpolarized MonteCarlo was re-weighted in the true kinematic variables, hadron types and parton flavors based on global fits of fixed target SIDIS experiments and e + e – annihilation data. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to 10 fb –1 and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields. Similar neutron information is obtained by comparing the ECCE e+p pseudo-data with the same from the EIC Yellow Report and scaling the corresponding Yellow Report e+ 3 He pseudo-data uncertainties accordingly. The impact on the knowledge of the Sivers functions, transversity and tensor charges, and the Collins function has then been evaluated in the same phenomenological extractions as in the Yellow Report. Finally, the impact is found to be comparable to that obtained with the parametrized Yellow Report detector and shows that the ECCE detector configuration can fulfill the physics goals on these quantities.

Multidimensional measurements of beam single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic charged-kaon electroproduction off protons in the valence region

Measurements of beam single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic electron scattering (SIDIS) with positively charged kaons off protons have been performed with 10.6 and 10.2 GeV incident electron beams using the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. We report an analysis of the electroproduction of positively charged kaons over a large kinematic range of fractional energy, Bjorken 𝑥, transverse momentum, and photon virtualities 𝑄 2 ranging from 1 GeV 2 up to 6 GeV 2 . This is the first published multidimensionally binned CLAS12 measurement of a kaon SIDIS single-spin asymmetry in the valence quark regime. The data provide constraints on the structure function ratio $𝐹^{sin \space𝜙}_{𝐿⁢𝑈}$⁡/$𝐹_{𝑈⁢𝑈}$, where $𝐹^{sin \space𝜙}_{𝐿⁢𝑈}$ is a quantity with a leading twist of twist-3 that can reveal novel aspects of the quark-gluon correlations within the nucleon. The impact of the data on understanding the underlying reaction mechanisms and their kinematic variation is explored using theoretical models for the different contributing twist-3 parton-distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs).

Single spin asymmetry in e+p → e′ +B↑ +X

We study an exotic type of single spin asymmetry in unpolarized electron-proton scattering, in which the outgoing electron momentum exhibits a left-right asymmetry relative to the transverse spin of the leading baryon B in the target fragmentation region. We lay out two theoretical frameworks for describing this effect: The twist-three fracture function at high-Q2 and the spin-dependent odderon in the high energy limit.

Transverse single-spin asymmetries in $γ$ SIDIS as a direct probe of quark-gluon-quark longitudinal momentum structure

Transverse single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic production of isolated photons ($\gamma$SIDIS), $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$, provide an unprecedented opportunity to extract the quark-gluon-quark correlators $F_{FT}(x,x')$ and $G_{FT}(x,x')$ point-by-point in their full support $x,x'$. We utilize realistic models for these functions, based on input from the Sivers transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function and imposing constraints from the $d_2$ matrix element calculated in lattice QCD, in order to provide numerical estimates for $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$ at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We thoroughly explore the EIC phase space in order to isolate in which regions the asymmetry can be sizable, finding it can be as much as $10\%$ or larger for certain kinematics. Given that $F_{FT}(x,x')$ and $G_{FT}(x,x')$ are basically unknown, $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$ will be an important future measurement to learn about multi-parton correlations in the nucleon.

Single spin asymmetries in electron-nucleon scattering at low and intermediate energies

The target normal single-spin asymmetry in electron nucleon scattering is studied in the framework of the 1/Nc expansion of QCD, which allows for a rigorous description in the energy range that includes the Δ resonance and below the second baryon resonance region. The asymmetry is driven by the absorptive part of the two-photon exchange component of the scattering amplitude, being therefore the most unambiguous two-photon exchange effect. Such amplitude is shown to be described up to the next to leading order in the 1/Nc expansion only in terms of the charge and magnetic form factors of the nucleons, consequence of the approximate SU(4) spin flavor symmetry valid in the large Nc limit for baryons. A discussion is provided of the 1/Nc expansion framework along with the results for the asymmetries in elastic (e−N↑→e−N ), inelastic (e−N↑→e−Δ ), and inclusive scattering.

Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetries of Midrapidity Direct Photons and Neutral Mesons at PHENIX

Results are presented for the transverse single-spin asymmetries of direct photons, neutral pions, and eta mesons for |\eta|<0.35 | η | < 0.35 from p^\uparrow + p p ↑ + p collisions with \sqrt{s} = 200 s = 200 GeV at PHENIX. As hadrons, \pi^0 π 0 and \eta η mesons are sensitive to both initial- and final-state effects and at midrapidity probe the dynamics of gluons along with a mix of quark flavors. Because direct photon production does not include hadronization, the direct photon TSSA is only sensitive to initial-state effects and at midrapidity provides a clean probe of the gluon dynamics in transversely polarized protons. All three of these results will help constrain the collinear twist-3 trigluon correlation function as well as the gluon Sivers function, improving our knowledge of spin-dependent gluon dynamics in QCD.

Transverse Single Spin Asymmetries of Heavy Flavor Electrons and Charged Pions in 200 GeV $p+p^{\uparrow}$ Collisions at Midrapidity

Transverse single spin asymmetries of particles produced in p+p^{\uparrow} p + p ↑ collisions provide insight on the partonic spin and momentum structure of hadrons; heavy flavor electrons provide access to initial state spin-momentum correlations of gluons in the proton, while charged pions provide access to initial and final state transverse spin effects. Charged particles are measured at midrapidity at PHENIX using the silicon vertex detector and central arm spectrometer, made of an electromagnetic calorimeter, a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector, and drift and pad chambers. Recent results for both electron and charged pion measurements from the 2015 running period will be presented.

Measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries for dijet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at √s = 200 GeV

We report a new measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries for dijet production in collisions of polarized protons at √ s = 200 GeV. Possible correlations between the proton spin and the transverse momenta of its partons, mutually orthogonal, with each perpendicular to the proton momentum direction, are probed at high Q 2 ≈160 GeV 2 . The associated Sivers observable ${\langle}k_T{\rangle}$, the average parton transverse momentum, is extracted using simple kinematics. Nonzero Sivers effects are observed for the first time in proton-proton collisions, but only when the jets are sorted by their net charge, which enhances the u- or d-quark contributions to separate data samples. This also enables a determination of the individual partonic contributions to the observed asymmetries.

Perturbative QCD contribution to transverse single spin asymmetries in the Drell-Yan process and SIDIS

In a previous publication [Benić , ], we have computed the perturbative QCD contribution to transverse single spin asymmetries (SSAs) in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) involving the g T ( x ) distribution. In this paper, we first present a more efficient derivation of the asymmetries which is applicable to both transverse and longitudinal SSAs and correct some inconsistencies in our previous calculation. We then adapt the method to compute transverse SSAs in the Drell-Yan process proportional to g T ( x ) and its gluonic counterpart and discuss the crossing symmetry between the results for SIDIS and the Drell-Yan process. Finally, we present numerical results for various asymmetries measurable at the EIC, RHIC, COMPASS, and Fermilab (SpinQuest), including also part of the genuine twist-three corrections to g T ( x ) from a recent global analysis. We find that the asymmetries can reach percent-level magnitude, if the kinematics predominantly probes the large- x (valence) region of the polarized proton, but remain at subpercent levels otherwise. Measurements of the $Z$ 0 /$γ$* cross section and transverse single spin asymmetry in 510 GeV $p$ + $p$ collisions

The differential cross section for Z 0 production, measured as a function of the boson’s transverse momentum (p T ), provides important constraints on the evolution of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). The transverse single spin asymmetry (TSSA) of the Z 0 is sensitive to one of the polarized TMDs, the Sivers function, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in p + p → W/Z + X from that which enters in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In this Letter, the STAR Collaboration reports the first measurement of the Z 0 /γ* differential cross section as a function of its p T in p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 510 GeV, together with the Z 0 /γ* total cross section. We also report the measurement of Z 0 /γ* TSSA in transversely polarized p+p collisions at 510 GeV.

Target normal single-spin asymmetry in inclusive electron-nucleon scattering with two-photon exchange: Analysis using 1/$N_c$ expansion

We calculate the target normal single-spin asymmetry caused by two-photon exchange in inclusive electron-nucleon scattering in the resonance region. Our analysis uses the 1/$N_c$ expansion of low-energy QCD and combines $\textit{N}$ and Δ intermediate and final states using the contracted $\textit{SU}$(4) spin-flavor symmetry. The normal spin asymmetry obtained in leading-order accuracy in 1/$N_c$ has magnitude ~10 -2 and different sign in $\textit{ep}$ and $\textit{en}$ scattering. It can be measured in electron scattering at lab energies ~0.5-1.5 GeV and provides a clean probe of two-photon exchange dynamics.

Single spin asymmetry in forward p A collisions from the Pomeron-odderon interference

Working in the hybrid framework of the high energy p A collisions we identify a new contribution to transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA). The phase necessary for the SSA is provided by the Pomeron-odderon interference in the dense nuclear target. The complete formula for the p A → h X polarized cross section also contains the transversity distribution for the polarized projectile as well as the real part of the twist-three fragmentation function. We numerically estimate the asymmetry A N and its nuclear dependence. Based on a model computation we find that A N can be a percent level in the forward and low- P h ⊥ region. For large nuclei we find significant suppression, with A N ∝ A − 7 / 6 parametrically. As a notable feature we find a node of A N as a function of the P h ⊥ around the values of the initial saturation scale that could be used to test this mechanism experimentally. Comparison of transverse single-spin asymmetries for forward π 0 production in polarized pp , p Al and p Au collisions at nucleon pair c.m. energy √sNN=200 GeV

The STAR collaboration reports a measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetries, A N , for neutral pions produced in polarized proton collisions with protons ( p p ), with aluminum nuclei ( p Al ) and with gold nuclei ( p Au ) at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. Neutral pions are observed in the forward direction relative to the transversely polarized proton beam, in the pseudorapidity region 2.7 < η < 3.8 . Results are presented for π 0 s observed in the STAR forward meson spectrometer electromagnetic calorimeter in narrow Feynman x ( x F ) and transverse momentum ( p T ) bins, spanning the range 0.17 < x F < 0.81 and 1.7 < p T < 6.0 GeV / c . For fixed x F < 0.47 , the asymmetries are found to rise with increasing transverse momentum. For larger x F , the asymmetry flattens or falls as p T increases. Parametrizing the ratio r ( A ) ≡ A N ( p A ) / A N ( p p ) = A P over the kinematic range, the ratio r ( A ) is found to depend only weakly on A , with ( P ) = - 0.027 ± 0.005 . No significant difference in P is observed between the low- p T region, p T < 2.5 GeV / c , where gluon saturation effects may play a role, and the high- p T region, p T > 2.5 GeV / c . It is further observed that the value of A N is significantly larger for events with a large- p T isolated π 0 than for events with a nonisolated π 0 accompanied by additional jetlike fragments. The nuclear dependence r ( A ) is similar for isolated and nonisolated π 0 events.

New Measurements of the Beam-Normal Single Spin Asymmetry in Elastic Electron Scattering Over a Range of Spin-0 Nuclei

We report precision determinations of the beam-normal single spin asymmetries (A n ) in the elastic scattering of 0.95 and 2.18 GeV electrons off 12 C, 40 Ca, 48 Ca, and 208 Pb at very forward angles where the most detailed theoretical calculations have been performed. The first measurements of A n for 40 Ca and 48 Ca are found to be similar to that of 12 C, consistent with expectations and thus demonstrating the validity of theoretical calculations for nuclei with Z ≤ 20. We also report A n for 208 Pb at two new momentum transfers (Q 2 ) extending the previous measurement. Our new data confirm the surprising result previously reported, with all three data points showing significant disagreement with the results from the Z ≤ 20 nuclei. These data confirm our basic understanding of the underlying dynamics that govern A n for nuclei containing ≲ 50 nucleons, but point to the need for further investigation to understand the unusual A n behavior discovered for scattering off 208 Pb.

Transverse single-spin asymmetry of forward 𝜂 mesons in 𝑝 ↑ +𝑝 collisions at √𝑠 =200 GeV

Utilizing the 2012 transversely polarized proton data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the forward 𝜂-meson transverse single-spin asymmetry (𝐴 𝑁 ) was measured for 𝑝 ↑ +𝑝 collisions at √𝑠 =200 GeV as a function of Feynman-x (𝑥 𝐹 ) for 0.2 <|𝑥 𝐹 | <0.8 and transverse momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) for 1.0 <𝑝 𝑇 <5.0 GeV/𝑐. Large asymmetries at positive 𝑥 𝐹 are observed (⟨𝐴 𝑁 ⟩=0.086±0.019), agreeing well with previous measurements of 𝜋 0 and 𝜂𝐴 𝑁 , but with reach to higher 𝑥 𝐹 and 𝑝 𝑇 . The contribution of initial-state spin-momentum correlations to the asymmetry, as calculated in the collinear twist-3 framework, appears insufficient to describe the data.

Measurement of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for elastic electron scattering from 12 C and 27 Al

We report measurements of the parity-conserving beam-normal single-spin elastic scattering asymmetries B n on 12 C and 27 Al, obtained with an electron beam polarized transverse to its momentum direction. These measurements add an additional kinematic point to a series of previous measurements of B n on 12 C and provide a first measurement on 27 Al. The experiment utilized the Q weak apparatus at Jefferson Lab with a beam energy of 1.158 GeV. The average lab scattering angle for both targets was 7.7°, and the average Q 2 for both targets was 0.02437 GeV 2 (Q = 0.1561 GeV). The asymmetries are B n = -10.68 ± 0.90 (stat) ± 0.57 (syst) ppm 12 C and B n = -12.16 ± 0.58 (stat) ± 0.62 (syst) ppm for 27 Al. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions, and are compared to existing data. When scaled by Z/A, the Q dependence of all the far-forward angle (θ < 10°) data from 1 H to 27 Al can be described by the same slope out to Q ≈ 0.35 GeV. Larger-angle data from other experiments in the same Q range are consistent with a slope about twice as steep.
