Update of the Nuclear Criticality Slide Rule Calculations: Plutonium systems – Delayed Fission Gamma

IRSN (France), LLNL (USA) and ORNL (USA) began a long-term collaboration effort in 2015 to update the nuclear criticality Slide Rule for the emergency response to a nuclear criticality accident. The Slide Rule permits the estimation of neutron and gamma dose rates and integrated doses based upon estimated fission yields, as a function of distance from the fission source, and time after criticality accidents for different critical systems. This paper presents results from the fourth phase of the current update of the Slide Rule project, in which delayed fission-product gamma (DFG) dose rates of unreflected plutonium critical systems were compared by several modern 3D radiation transport codes (MCNP, COG, SCALE), using updated flux-to-dose conversion factors. Dose rates are calculated for fissile material at five moderation ratios (H/Pu), at 1 m above the ground as a function of distance (between 30 cm and 1,200 m) from the external surface of the source to the center of the detector, and for periods between 1 s and 1,000 min after the critical instantaneous event. Further efforts have been devoted to the determination of the delayed gamma source, by comparing the time-dependent energy spectra obtained from several methods. Overall, DFG dose rates calculated by each participant led to consistent results. Extra effort is under way to identify the cause of the remaining differences, by comparing precisely the gamma source, and particularly nuclides inventories.

Utah FORGE: Slide-Hold-Slide Experiments on Gneiss at Increased Temperature

Included are data from triaxial, single-inclined-fracture friction experiments. The experiments were performed with slide-hold-slide protocol on Utah FORGE gneiss at increased temperature. With a ~10 MPa normal stress, temperatures vary between experiments from room temperature up to 163 Celsius. Hold times vary during experiment from ~10^1 to ~10^5 seconds. Measured are the frictional response upon reactivation after a hold period, active acoustic data (P-wave velocity and amplitude) and passive acoustic data (acoustic emission occurrence and amplitude). There are two types of datafiles: (1) Datafiles containing the friction data, including the temperature and the active acoustic data measured during the experiment (AEXX_Gneiss_Vp_mixref4). The underscore _Vp means that it includes the Vp or P-wave velocity data, with _mixref meaning that we use a mixed reference point for calculating the P-wave velocity. And (2) the datafiles containing the passive acoustics data, a catalog of the acoustic emissions (AE's) measured during the experiment (AEcatalog_AEXX_runX), where AEXX matches the experiment number and runX denotes which part of the experiment the data was collected, matching the times where active acoustic data was collected. AE catalogs are split in two parts when the file size exceeds 1 GB to aid download/opening times.

Utah FORGE: Slide-Hold-Slide Experiments on Westerly Granite at Temperatures up to 250 Degrees C

Laboratory slide-hold-slide tests were conducted in a conventional triaxial deformation configuration on 1-inch diameter cylindrical cores of Westerly granite bisected by a sawcut oriented at 30 degrees from vertical. Tests were conducted at a constant confining pressure of 30 MPa with a 10 MPa pore fluid pressure. The pore fluid was deionized water. Experiments were conducted at temperatures of 22, 100, 200, and 250 C. This data was collected to examine fault strength recovery in hydrothermal conditions.

Status of the Slide Rule Update - Phase 4 Plutonium Configurations – Delayed Gamma [Slides]

The fourth phase of Slide-Rule update gives a calculation scheme for DFG doses and its application to five plutonium material, as well as comparisons between radiation transport and depletion codes such as MCNP, SCALE, COG and FISPACT. Overall, DFG dose rates calculated by each laboratory led to consistent results. Extra effort is under way to identify the cause of the remaining differences, especially for case 2, by comparing precisely the gamma source, and particularly nuclides inventories.

Preparation of Nuclear Data Libraries for Web Release [Slides] and Tutorial for Generating Correlated Random Samples and Propagation of Uncertainty [Slides]

The first presentation discuses moving distribution of nuclear data to an online platform which allows ore frequent nuclear data updates, greater ease of acquiring nuclear data, and user flexibility in what nuclear data to download. The second presentation illustrates uncertainties without correlation, uncertainties without correlation with negative samples, uncertainties with correlation, uncertainties with a χ-like constraint, uncertainties with a Σ tot -like constraint, sampling using different distributions, and dealing with negative eigenvalues in a covariance matrix.

Sensor Selection for MIMO Vibration: Summary Slides [Slides]

Summary: Sensor selection approach for MIMO testing was defined and demonstrated on a model of a practical system. Laboratory response obtained using the approach matched the field response well. Information about how many control sensors, and where to locate sensors can be gleaned from the approach.
