Benchmark of Neutron Thermalization in Graphite Using a Pulsed Slowing-Down-Time Experiment

A benchmark has been developed using a pulsed slowing-down-time experiment to isolate the thermalization process in graphite. The experiment was conducted at the Oak Ridge Electron Linear Accelerator facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and it measured the time spectrum of neutrons leaking from a graphite pile during slowing down and thermalization within graphite. Simulations of the benchmark experiment were performed using the MCNP6.1 Monte Carlo code and the ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 cross-section databases. The benchmark provides a time spectrum (i.e., time-dependent counts in a detector) that allows for validation of the graphite thermal scattering libraries (TSLs). The impact on the simulations using a suite of graphite TSLs was compared with the experimental results. Given the density of nuclear graphite, the TSL corresponding to graphite with 30% porosity, as implemented in ENDF/B-VIII.0, was found to most accurately represent the measured time spectrum corresponding to the thermal energy range with an average deviation of ±1.7%.

Development of a Pulsed Slowing-Down-Time Benchmark of Neutron Thermalization in Graphite

Graphite is a classic neutronic material that has been used as both a reactor reflector and moderator in various nuclear reactor systems. The ability to accurately predict the slowing down and thermalization of neutrons in graphite can have significant implications on the safety and operation of such reactor systems. In reactors, the neutron thermalization process is quantified using the thermal scattering law (TSL) and related cross sections for a given moderator. An ideal approach to assess the validity of TSL data is using benchmark measurement based on the pulsed Slowing-Down-Time technique and its comparison with the appropriate graphite nuclear library. In this work, experimental measurement and computational Monte Carlo simulations were performed to benchmark the slowing down characteristics and thermalization of neutrons in nuclear (reactor-grade) graphite. Given the density of graphite, various graphite libraries were selected for the benchmark analysis.

Development and Evaluation of Neutron Thermalization Integral Benchmarks for Advanced Reactor Applications (Final Report)

In this project, integral benchmarks that aim to examine thermal neutron scattering data for graphite (ideal and nuclear), light water, and molten salt FLiBe will be analyzed. In particular, the project aims to: 1) Develop the slowing-down-time experiment that was performed at the OREAL facility of ORNL as a graphite benchmarks; 2) Identify and examine a slowing-down-time experiment in light water as a potential benchmark; 3) Reexamine the molten salt MSRE-MSR-EXP-001 benchmark to explicitly capture the impact of TSL variations.
