A Lyapunov-Based Generalized Dc-Side Controller Design for PV-Connected Systems

The objective of this paper is to realize a universal dc-side controller for photovoltaic (PV) systems where the control is agnostic to the downstream converter configuration. To achieve this, the downstream power converter and its controls are manipulated into an effective power control loop that is then cast into a generalized multi-loop design framework. On the dc side, a nonlinear small-signal model of the PV input is realized exclusively in terms of PV datasheet parameters (i.e., open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and maximum power point). Finally, a linear controller is used to modulate the dc-side PV system with the generic downstream power controller. A Lyapunov candidate is proposed to analyze the stability of the interconnected system and provide a streamlined approach for the controller design. The proposed design is validated on a 1k VA experimental setup that interfaces a PV module to the grid.

Power Electronics Based Self-Monitoring and Diagnosing for Photovoltaic Systems

Faults in photovoltaic (PV) systems can seriously affect the efficiency, energy yield, cost, safety, and reliability of PV plants. Condition monitoring of PV plants is, therefore, a very important approach to estimating the health condition of PV modules and power electronics in the system. However, additional hardware for PV system monitoring adds cost to the system's operation; delayed maintenance service also causes additional energy production loss. The Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Siemens Cooperate Research developed the online impedance measurement for a PV panel self-monitoring and diagnosing technology using the DC-DC converter connected to the panel. Small-signal impedances of a monocrystalline silicon PV panel were modeled and simulated to reflect fault conditions such as the short-circuit, hot-spot, and junction box faults. Modeling and simulation results were validated firstly using a test setup consisting of a solar simulator, a network analyzer, small-signal injectors, and a monocrystalline PV panel rated at 300 W.

Advanced grid-forming (GFM) inverter controls, modeling and system impact study for inverter dominated grids

Our main goals in this project are to understand: 1) the stability of the power system with very high penetration of PV or other inverter-based resources (IBR), 2) the interactions among IBRs and traditional generators, and 3) the impact of the GFM inverters on bulk power system. To achieve these goals, we took a holistic research and development approach. First, an impedance-based large system modeling and stability analysis tool was developed to aid the large IBR system small-signal stability analysis. Second, consensus-based control and transient overload ride through were developed to control and coordinate multiple GFM inverters in a large system to maintain transient stability during big grid events. Third, high fidelity electromagnetic transient (EMT) IBR models were developed and integrated into a large reduced WECC model to study the system impact from IBRs. Lastly, extensive validation tests of the GFM control which was developed in this project and implemented in two 1MW commercial solar inverters were performed using different validation platforms, e.g., control hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) platform, power hardware- in-the-loop (PHIL) platform, and a real PV plant.
