Superconducting dome in ferroelectric-type materials from soft mode instability

Here we present a minimal theory of superconductivity enhancement in ferroelectric-type materials. Simple expressions for the optical mode responsible for the soft mode transition are assumed. A key role is played by the anharmonic phonon damping which is modulated by an external control parameter (electron doping or mechanical strain) causing the appearance of the soft mode. It is shown that the enhancement in the superconducting critical temperature T c upon approaching the ferroelectric transition from either side is due to the Stokes electron-phonon scattering processes promoted by strong phonon damping effects.

Gallery of soft modes: Theory and experiment at a ferromagnetic quantum phase transition

We examine the low-energy excitations in the vicinity of the quantum critical point in LiHoF4, a physical realization of the Transverse Field Ising Model, focusing on the long-range fluctuations which soften to zero energy at the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. Microwave spectroscopy in tunable loop-gap resonator structures identifies and characterizes the electronuclear soft mode and higher-energy electronuclear states as a function of frequency and magnetic fields applied transverse and parallel to the Ising axis. These are understood in the context of a theoretical model of a soft electronuclear mode that interacts with soft photons as well as soft phonons. We identify competing infrared divergences at the quantum critical point, coming from the photons and the electronuclear soft mode. It is an incomplete cancellation of these divergences that leads to the muted but distinct signatures observed in the experiments. The application of a longitudinal magnetic field gaps the soft mode. As a result, measurements well away from the quantum critical point reveal a set of "Walker'' modes associated with ferromagnetic domain dynamics.

Linear in temperature resistivity in the limit of zero temperature from the time reparameterization soft mode

The most puzzling aspect of the ‘strange metal’ behavior of correlated electron compounds is that the linear in temperature resistivity often extends down to low temperatures, lower than natural microscopic energy scales. We consider recently proposed deconfined critical points (or phases) in models of electrons in large dimension lattices with random nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. The criticality is in the class of Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev models, and exhibits a time reparameterization soft mode representing gravity in dual holographic theories. We compute the low temperature resistivity in a large M limit of models with SU(M) spin symmetry, and find that the dominant temperature dependence arises from this soft mode. The resistivity is linear in temperature down to zero temperature at the critical point, with a co-efficient universally proportional to the product of the residual resistivity and the co-efficient of the linear in temperature specific heat. We argue that the time reparameterization soft mode offers a promising and generic mechanism for resolving the strange metal puzzle.

Soft-mode enhanced type-I superconductivity in LiPd 2 Ge

The synthesis, crystal structure, and physical properties (magnetization, resistivity, heat capacity) in combination with theoretical calculations of the electronic structure and phonon properties are reported for intermetallic compounds LiPd 2 X ( X = Si, Ge, and Sn). LeBail refinement of powder x-ray diffraction data confirms that all compounds belong to the Heusler family (space group $\textit{F m-3m}$, No. 225). The lattice parameter increases with atomic size of X , and its value varies from $\textit{a}$ = 5.9059(4) Å for LiPd 2 Si and $\textit{a}$ = 6.0082(3)Å for LiPd 2 Ge, to $\textit{a}$ = 6.2644(1) Å for LiPd 2 Sn. The first compound, LiPd 2 Si, has apparently not been previously reported. All measured quantities demonstrate that LiPd 2 Ge exhibits superconductivity below $T_c$ = 1.96 K and the normal- and superconducting-state data indicate that it is a weak-strength type-I superconductor ($C/γT_c$ = 1.38) with electron-phonon coupling constant $λ_{e–p}$ = (0.53–0.56). LiPd 2 Si and LiPd 2 Sn are not superconducting above 1.68 K. The experimental observations are supported by theoretical calculations which show that LiPd 2 Ge has the highest computed $λ_{e–p}$ and $T_c$ of the group. A strong softening of the acoustic phonon mode is calculated, and in the case of X = Ge and Sn, imaginary phonon frequencies were computed. In this work, the soft mode is most pronounced in the case of LiPd 2 Ge, which suggests its correlation with superconductivity.

Coexistence of Soft Modes and Dynamic Ti Disorder in Cubic BaTiO 3 Studied by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

The phonon dispersion relations in cubic BaTiO 3 have been measured along the [100], [110], and [111] directions at T = 453 K using inelastic neutron scattering. The isotropic transverse acoustic (TA) branches indicate that the interatomic force constant between Ba and O atoms in BaTiO 3 is large compared with that between Pb and O atoms in PbTiO 3 . The transverse optical (TO) branches along the [100] and [111] directions soften toward the Brillouin zone center. The TO branch along the [110] direction with [001] polarization is relatively low and flat, indicating the weak interatomic force constant between Ti and O atoms along the Ti–O chain. The intensity of inelastic diffuse scattering along the [100] and [110] directions increases with decreasing temperature down to 453 K. In conclusion, the present results suggest that the soft modes coexist with the dynamic Ti disorder in the Ti–O chain near the phase transition in the cubic phase.

Antichiral spin order, its soft modes, and their hybridization with phonons in the topological semimetal Mn 3 Ge

Here we report the magnetic structure and spin excitations of Mn 3 Ge , a breathing kagome antiferromagnet with transport anomalies attributed to Weyl nodes. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we show the magnetic order is a k = 0 coplanar state belonging to a Γ 9 irreducible representation, which can be described as a perfect 120 ° antichiral structure with a moment of 2.2(1) μ B /Mn, superimposed with weak collinear ferromagnetism. Inelastic neutron scattering shows three collective Q = 0 excitations at Δ 1 = 2.9 ( 6 ) meV, Δ 2 = 14.6 ( 3 ) meV, and Δ 3 = 17.5 ( 3 ) meV. A field theory of Q ≈ 0 spin waves in triangular antiferromagnets with a 120 ° spin structure was used to classify these modes. The in-plane mode ( α ) is gapless, Δ 1 is the gap to a doublet of out-of-plane spin excitations ( β x , β y ), and Δ 2 , Δ 3 result from hybridization of optical phonons with magnetic excitations. While a phenomenological spin Hamiltonian including exchange interactions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and single-ion crystal field terms can describe aspects of the Mn-based magnetism, spin-wave damping [ Γ = 25 ( 8 ) meV] and the extended range of magnetic interactions indicate itinerant magnetism consistent with the transport anomalies.

Understanding Reentrance in Frustrated Magnets: The Case of the Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 Pyrochlore

Reentrance, the return of a system from an ordered phase to a previously encountered less-ordered one as a controlled parameter is continuously varied, is a recurring theme found in disparate physical systems, yet its microscopic cause is often not investigated thoroughly. Here, through detailed characterization and theoretical modeling, we uncover the microscopic mechanism behind reentrance in the strongly frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 . We use single crystal heat capacity measurements to expose that Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 exhibits multiple instances of reentrance in its magnetic field B vs temperature T phase diagram for magnetic fields along three cubic high symmetry directions. Through classical Monte Carlo simulations, mean field theory, and classical linear spin-wave expansions, we argue that the origins of the multiple occurrences of reentrance observed in Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 are linked to soft modes. These soft modes arise from phase competition and enhance thermal fluctuations that entropically stabilize a specific ordered phase, resulting in an increased transition temperature for certain field values and thus the reentrant behavior. Our work represents a detailed examination into the mechanisms responsible for reentrance in a frustrated magnet and may serve as a template for the interpretation of reentrant phenomena in other physical systems.

Charge carrier coupling to the soft phonon mode in a ferroelectric semiconductor

Many crystalline solids possess strongly anharmonic “soft” phonon modes characterized by diminishing frequency as temperature approaches a critical point associated with a symmetry breaking phase transition. While electron–soft phonon coupling can introduce unique scattering channels for charge carriers in ferroelectrics, recent studies on the nonferroelectric lead halide perovskites have also suggested the central role of anharmonic phonons bearing resemblance to soft modes in charge carrier screening. Here we apply coherent phonon spectroscopy to directly study electron coupling to the soft transverse optical phonon mode in a ferroelectric semiconductor SbSI. Photogenerated charge carriers in SbSI are found to be exceptionally long lived and are associated with a transient electro-optical effect that can be explained by interactions between charge carriers and thermally stimulated soft phonon excitations. Furthermore, these results provide strong evidence for the role of electron–soft phonon coupling in the efficient screening of charge carriers and in reducing charge recombination rates, both desirable properties for optoelectronics.

Insights into the possible existence of a soft dipole mode in He 8

With an extreme neutron-to-proton ratio of N/Z = 3, 8 He provides an ideal laboratory for the study of a variety of exotic phenomena, such as the emergence of a soft dipole mode that is dominated by transitions into the continuum. In this contribution, a covariant density-functional theory (DFT) framework is used to compute ground-state properties and the dipole response of 8 He. Although 8 He is admittedly too light for DFT to be applicable, the great merit of the approach is that the spurious contamination associated with the center-of-mass motion is guaranteed to decouple from the physical response. Given that a strong mixing between the isoscalar and isovector dipole modes is expected for a system with such a large neutron-proton asymmetry as 8 He, the narrow structures that emerged at low energies in the isovector dipole response are attributed to the shift of the spurious strength to zero (or near zero) excitation energy. Furthermore, the theoretical framework implemented here disfavors the emergence of a soft dipole mode in 8 He.

On-shell derivation of the soft effective action in Abelian gauge theories

We derive the soft effective action in (d+2)-dimensional Abelian gauge theories from the on-shell action obeying Neumann boundary conditions at timelike and null infinity and Dirichlet boundary conditions at spatial infinity. This allows us to identify the on-shell degrees of freedom on the boundary with the soft modes living on the celestial sphere. Following the work of Donnelly and Wall, this suggests that we can interpret soft modes as entanglement edge modes on the celestial sphere and study entanglement properties of soft modes in Abelian gauge theories.

Single-Layer Dititanium Oxide Ti 2 O MOene: Multifunctional Promises for Electride, Anode Materials, and Superconductor

Using the first-principles calculations, we report the existence of the single-layer (SL) dititanium oxide Ti 2 O (labeled as MOene) that constructs a novel family of MXene based on transition-metal oxides. This MOene material strongly contrasts the conventional ones consisting of transition-metal carbides and/or nitrides. SL Ti 2 O has high thermal and dynamical stabilities because of the strong Ti–O ionic bonding interactions. Moreover, this material is an intrinsic electride and exhibits extremely low diffusion barriers of ~12.0 and 6.3 meV for Li and Na diffusion, respectively. When applied as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries, it possesses a high energy storage capacity (960.23 mAhg –1 ), surpassing the traditional MXenes-based anodes. The superb electrochemical performance stems from the existing anionic electron on Ti 2 O surface. Astonishingly, SL Ti 2 O is also determined to be a superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature (T c ) of ~9.8 K, which originates from the soft-mode of the first acoustic phonon branch and enhanced electron–phonon coupling in the low-frequency region. Furthermore, this soft-mode behaves much softer upon applying a compressive strain of 2%, leading to a higher T c of 11.9 K. Furthermore, our finding broadens the family of MXenes and could facilitate more experimental efforts toward future nanodevices.

Features of relaxation modes in soft magnetic metallic glasses and their correlation with magnetic ordering

Although the anneal-induced relaxation process of Fe-based metallic glasses has been widely reported, there is a lack of a systematic description of the relaxation modes of atoms. Here, in this work, the relaxation modes of FeSiBPC metallic glasses and their relationship with magnetic ordering have been investigated. A two-stage relaxation behavior has been observed, and the pinning effect of Curie temperature is found in the first stage. The short-range ordering involved in the β relaxation in the first stage is confined and facilitated by magnetic ordering. It causes a smaller E β compared to that of non-magnetic metallic glasses. In the second stage, the pinning effect disappears. It is mainly the medium-range rearrangements involved in α relaxation that begins to yield the influence on magnetic ordering. This work uncovers the inner magnet-influenced β relaxation in Fe-based metallic glasses and provides insights into the interaction between structural arrangement during relaxation and magnetic ordering.

Thermal disorder and phonon softening in the ferroelectric phase transition of lead titanate

We report a molecular dynamics study of ab initio quality of the ferroelectric phase transition in crystalline PbTi⁢O3. We model anharmonicity accurately in terms of potential energy and polarization surfaces trained on density functional theory data with modern machine learning techniques. Our simulations demonstrate that the transition has a strong order-disorder character, in agreement with diffraction experiments, and provide fresh insight into the approach to equilibrium across the phase transition. We find that the emergence and disappearance of the macroscopic polarization is driven by dipolar switching at the nanometer scale. We also computed the infrared optical absorption spectra in both the ferroelectric and the paraelectric phases, finding good agreement with the experimental Raman frequencies. Often, the almost ideal displacive character of the soft mode detected by Raman scattering in the paraelectric phase has been contrasted with the order-disorder character of the transition suggested by diffraction experiments. We settle this issue by showing that the soft mode coexists with a strong Debye relaxation associated with thermal disordering of the dipoles. The Debye relaxation feature is centered at zero frequency and appears near the transition temperature in both the ferroelectric and the paraelectric phases.

Terahertz-Driven Local Dipolar Correlation in a Quantum Paraelectric

Light-induced ferroelectricity in quantum paraelectrics is a new avenue of achieving dynamic stabilization of hidden orders in quantum materials. In this Letter, we explore the possibility of driving a transient ferroelectric phase in the quantum paraelectric KTaO 3 via intense terahertz excitation of the soft mode. We observe a long-lived relaxation in the terahertz-driven second harmonic generation (SHG) signal that lasts up to 20 ps at 10 K, which may be attributed to light-induced ferroelectricity. Through analyzing the terahertz-induced coherent soft-mode oscillation and finding its hardening with fluence well described by a single-well potential, we demonstrate that intense terahertz pulses up to 500 kV=cm cannot drive a global ferroelectric phase in KTaO 3 . Instead, we find the unusual long-lived relaxation of the SHG signal comes from a terahertz-driven moderate dipolar correlation between the defect-induced local polar structures. We discuss the impact of our findings on current investigations of the terahertz-induced ferroelectric phase in quantum paraelectrics.

Near conformal perturbation theory in SYK type models

We present a systematic procedure to extract the dynamics of the low energy soft mode in SYK type models with a single energy scale J and emergent reparametrization symmetry in the IR. This is given in the framework of the perturbative scheme of arXiv:1608.07567 based on a specific (off-shell) breaking of conformal invariance in the UV, adjusted to yield the exact large-N saddle point. While this breaking term formally vanishes on-shell, it has a non-trivial effect on correlation functions and the effective action. In particular, it leads to the Schwarzian action with a specific coupling to bi-local matter. The method is applied to the evaluation of O(1) corrections to the correlation function of bi-locals. As a byproduct we confirm precise agreement with the explicit, symmetry breaking procedure. We provide a verification in the large q limit (Liouville theory), where the correlators can be calculated exactly at all length scales. In this case, our scheme illuminates how the enhanced O(J) and the subleading O(1) contributions originate from the Schwarzian dynamics of the soft mode and its interaction with h = 2 (bi-local) matter.
