Encoding and decoding of color information using two-dimensional spatial filtering.

Spatial frequency encoding is described as it applies to both photographic and television systems. In each case, color separations amplitude modulate spatial frequency carriers. The photographic system separates the carriers in the two-dimensional Fourier transform plane using coherent optics; the television system employs a two-dimensional electrical filter to perform the same separation. These filters are synthesized so that the two-dimensional bandwidths of the television camera are used efficiently. Nonlinear processing techniques are also described to minimize crosstalk between channels.

Spatial filter for Q-switched lasers

A spatial filtered Q-switched laser system is reported that prevents ionization of air in close proximity to the aperture of the spatial filter. A compound lens system having an astigmatic focus is positioned between the laser and the spatial filter for defocusing the light beam emanating from the laser in the vicinity of the aperture of the spatial filter to an intensity below that which produces ionization of air. The preferred construction of the compound lens system as viewed from the laser comprises a cylindrical lens and a pair of positive lenses.

The effects of weighting function errors on spatial filters for structural control

Distributed-effect sensors, which respond to spatially distributed inputs over a significant gauge length, encompass piezoelectric laminate films, modal-domain optical fiber sensors, and holographic sensors; they can be fabricated with spatially varying sensitivity to a distributed measurand for spatial filtering. Such spatial filters are configurable to extract various structural parameters from distributed measurements that cannot be directly measured by sensors. A modeling is presently conducted for distributed-effect sensors' integration into state-space structural models, noting the effects of fabrication errors on sensor operation.

Measurement of Spatial Filtering Capabilities of Single Mode Infrared Fibers

Spatial filtering is necessary to achieve deep nulls in optical interferometer and single mode infrared fibers can serve as spatial filters. The filtering function is based on the ability of these devices to perform the mode-cleaning function: only the component of the input field that is coupled to the single bound (fundamental) mode of the device propagates to the output without substantial loss. In practical fiber devices, there are leakage channels that cause light not coupled into the fundamental mode to propagate to the output. These include propagation through the fiber cladding and by means of a leaky mode. We propose a technique for measuring the magnitude of this leakage and apply it to infrared fibers made at the Naval Research Laboratory and at Tel Aviv University.

Evaluation of spatial filtering on the accuracy of wheat area estimate

A 3 x 3 pixel spatial filter for postclassification was used for wheat classification to evaluate the effects of this procedure on the accuracy of area estimation using LANDSAT digital data obtained from a single pass. Quantitative analyses were carried out in five test sites (approx 40 sq km each) and t tests showed that filtering with threshold values significantly decreased errors of commission and omission. In area estimation filtering improved the overestimate of 4.5% to 2.7% and the root-mean-square error decreased from 126.18 ha to 107.02 ha. Extrapolating the same procedure of automatic classification using spatial filtering for postclassification to the whole study area, the accuracy in area estimate was improved from the overestimate of 10.9% to 9.7%. It is concluded that when single pass LANDSAT data is used for crop identification and area estimation the postclassification procedure using a spatial filter provides a more accurate area estimate by reducing classification errors.

HOE/lensless matched spatial filter wavelength-scaling correlator

A scaling correlator optical pattern recognition system is described in which a lensless matched spatial filter (with the second Fourier transform lens and the matched spatial filter recorded on the same plate) is used with a first Fourier transform lens that is also an holographic optical element. The matched spatial filter is recorded at one wavelength and correlation is obtained at a second wavelength. Experimental demonstration and output correlation SNR data are reported, together with a comparison of the system's noise level using conventional optics and holographic elements.

Effect of Spatial Filtering in Implicit Large-Eddy Simulations of Separated Flows

The relatively high Reynolds number of turbulent flows encountered in various applications puts these problems well beyond the reach of direct numerical simulation (DNS) at present. Meanwhile, lower-fidelity Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) calculations are known to be not accurate enough in complex problems, such as smooth-body flow separation and other flows involving highly-unsteady phenomena. Hence, given the current infeasibility of DNS and the unsatisfactory performance of RANS, intermediate techniques such as large-eddy simulation (LES) and hybrid RANS-LES, whose fidelity lie between RANS and DNS, have received much attention for application to various problems of practical importance. Modeling of the effect of missing scales on resolved scales, also known as subgrid-scale (SGS) modeling, is an important subject for LES. SGS models can be broadly categorized as explicit or implicit approaches. The explicit approach is based on an SGS model that explicitly appears in the governing equations expressed in the form of so-called “filtered Navier-Stokes equations”, which describe the evolution of the turbulence scales resolved by the LES grid. The effect of the scales unresolved by the grid is represented by the SGS model. The implicit modeling approach, on the other hand, does not employ an explicit model but instead treats the intrinsic dissipation of the numerical discretization scheme as an implicit SGS model. An LES without an explicit SGS model is commonly termed as an implicit LES (ILES). The relative merits of one SGS modeling approach over another is a subject of ongoing debate. We have opted to employ an ILES methodology, based on high-order compact finite-difference and spatial filtering schemes, in our recent investigations of separated flow problems [1, 2]. Further discussion of our preference of ILES over explicit LES is provided in Uzun and Malik [2]. The spatial filtering operation, described in the next section, is treated as an implicit SGS model for the ILES. Some observations made during the course of our recent investigations, which pointed out to excessive numerical dissipation in certain parts of the flowfield, prompted us to take a closer look at the potential effect of the spatial filter on ILES predictions. This technical note is therefore devoted to spatial filter effects in the context of a high Reynolds number, transonic shock-induced separated flow.

Terrain tracking for lander guidance using binary phase-only spatial filters

We demonstrate the use of binary phase-only spatial filters (BPOFs) for tracking target sites through a sequence of gray-scale terrain images. The filters are demonstrated in a closed loop guidance system for a laboratory lander mockup. Images of a 3D terrain board taken by the lander's video camera are preprocessed to produce binary intensity contour maps of a simulated planetary surface. A BPOF is made from a section of the current preprocessed image centered on the exact desired landing site. After the lander has descended to a lower altitude, the BPOF is correlated with a new image. The position of the correlation peak is used in making the next filter and to guide the lander so as to recenter the landing site in the camera's view. We present testbed results of the accuracy with which a site may be tracted from orbit to landing, and the maximum scale, translation, and rotation which can be tolerated between subsequent images. Application of the results to NASA's proposed Mars Rover Sample Return (MRSR) and Mars Environmental Survey (MESUR) missions is discussed.

Low-pass spatial filtering of satellite radar data

Thirty-four low-pass spatial filter treatments were applied to a multi-angle SIR-B data set to reduce speckle effects and improve classification performance. These treatments were based on four algorithms: square mean, separable mean, square median, and separable recursive median. The filtered images were evaluated using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. It was determined that the square median algorithm implemented at two iterations with a window size of 3 by 3 produced the best overall results with the 28.5-m SIR-B data.

Full complex spatial filtering with a phase mostly DMD

A new technique for implementing fully complex spatial filters with a phase mostly deformable mirror device (DMD) light modulator is described. The technique combines two or more phase-modulating flexure-beam mirror elements into a single macro-pixel. By manipulating the relative phases of the individual sub-pixels within the macro-pixel, the amplitude and the phase can be independently set for this filtering element. The combination of DMD sub-pixels into a macro-pixel is accomplished by adjusting the optical system resolution, thereby trading off system space bandwidth product for increased filtering flexibility. Volume in the larger dimensioned space, space bandwidth-complex axes count, is conserved. Experimental results are presented mapping out the coupled amplitude and phase characteristics of the individual flexure-beam DMD elements and demonstrating the independent control of amplitude and phase in a combined macro-pixel. This technique is generally applicable for implementation with any type of phase modulating light modulator.

Spatial filters for shape control

Recently there has emerged a new class of sensors, called spatial filters, for structures which respond over a significant gauge length. Examples include piezoelectric laminate PVDF film, modal domain optical fiber sensors, and holographic sensors. These sensors have a unique capability in that they can be fabricated to locally alter their sensitivity to the measurand. In this paper we discuss how these sensors can be used for the implementation of control algorithms for the suppression of acoustic radiation from flexible structures. Based on this relationship between the total power radiated to the far field to the modal velocities of the structure, we show how the sensor placement to optimize the control algorithm to suppress the radiated power.

Two-Dimensional Planar Lightwave Circuit Integrated Spatial Filter Array and Method of Use Thereof

A large coherent two-dimensional (2D) spatial filter array (SFA), 30 by 30 or larger, is produced by coupling a 2D planar lightwave circuit (PLC) array with a pair of lenslet arrays at the input and output side. The 2D PLC array is produced by stacking a plurality of chips, each chip with a plural number of straight PLC waveguides. A pupil array is coated onto the focal plane of the lenslet array. The PLC waveguides are produced by deposition of a plural number of silica layers on the silicon wafer, followed by photolithography and reactive ion etching (RIE) processes. A plural number of mode filters are included in the silica-on-silicon waveguide such that the PLC waveguide is transparent to the fundamental mode but higher order modes are attenuated by 40 dB or more.

Spectrometer Baseline Control Via Spatial Filtering

An absorptive half-moon aperture mask is experimentally explored as a broad-bandwidth means of eliminating spurious spectral features arising from reprocessed radiation in an infrared Fourier transform spectrometer. In the presence of the spatial filter, an order of magnitude improvement in the fidelity of the spectrometer baseline is observed. The method is readily accommodated within the context of commonly employed instrument configurations and leads to a factor of two reduction in optical throughput. A detailed discussion of the underlying mechanism and limitations of the method are provided.
