Quantum spin state transitions in the spin-1 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2

We report we have grown single crystals of Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 , a spin-1 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet (ETLAF), and performed magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and thermal conductivity measurements at ultralow temperatures. The main results are as follows: (i) At zero magnetic field, Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 exhibits a magnetic ordering at 430 mK with a weak ferromagnetic moment along the $\textit{c}$ axis. This suggests a canted 120° spin structure, which is in a plane including the crystallographic $\textit{c}$ axis due to the existence of an easy-axis anisotropy and ferromagnetically stacked along the $\textit{c}$ axis. (ii) With increasing field along the $\textit{c}$ axis, a 1/3 magnetization plateau is observed, which means that the canted 120° spin structure is transformed into an up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. With even higher fields, the UUD phase further evolves into possible V and V' phases. (iii) With increasing field along the $\textit{a}$ axis, the canted 120° spin structure is possibly transformed into an umbrella phase and a V phase. Therefore Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 is a rare example of a spin-1 ETLAF with single-crystalline form that exhibits easy-axis spin anisotropy and a series of quantum spin state transitions.

Magnetic Field Perturbations to a Soft X-ray-Activated Fe (II) Molecular Spin State Transition

The X-ray-induced spin crossover transition of an Fe (II) molecular thin film in the presence and absence of a magnetic field has been investigated. The thermal activation energy barrier in the soft X-ray activation of the spin crossover transition for [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)] molecular thin films is reduced in the presence of an applied magnetic field, as measured through X-ray absorption spectroscopy at various temperatures. The influence of a 1.8 T magnetic field is sufficient to cause deviations from the expected exponential spin state transition behavior which is measured in the field free case. We find that orbital moment diminishes with increasing temperature, relative to the spin moment in the vicinity of room temperature.

Survival of itinerant excitations and quantum spin state transitions in YbMgGaO 4 with chemical disorder

A recent focus of quantum spin liquid (QSL) studies is how disorder/randomness in a QSL candidate affects its true magnetic ground state. The ultimate question is whether the QSL survives disorder or the disorder leads to a “spin-liquid-like” state, such as the proposed random-singlet (RS) state. Since disorder is a standard feature of most QSL candidates, this question represents a major challenge for QSL candidates. YbMgGaO 4 , a triangular lattice antiferromagnet with effective spin-1/2 Yb 3+ ions, is an ideal system to address this question, since it shows no long-range magnetic ordering with Mg/Ga site disorder. Despite the intensive study, it remains unresolved as to whether YbMgGaO 4 is a QSL or in the RS state. Here, through ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity and magnetic torque measurements, plus specific heat and DC magnetization data, we observed a residual κ 0 /T term and series of quantum spin state transitions in the zero temperature limit for YbMgGaO 4 . These observations strongly suggest that a QSL state with itinerant excitations and quantum spin fluctuations survives disorder in YbMgGaO 4 .

Nanoscale Tracking of the High-Temperature Spin-State Transition in LaCoO 3

The high-temperature spin and electronic transitions in LaCoO 3 have recently been leveraged to create neuromorphic (brain-inspired) devices. While these devices have shown the potential for impactful functionality in next-generation computing systems, the nanoscale dynamics of the spin and electronic transitions that underlie their operation are not well understood. Inhomogeneities related to interfaces, electrode contacts, strain, and crystal defects can all affect device performance, making nanoscale characterization of the transitions essential for producing consistent and reliable devices. Here, we demonstrate the first nanoscale in situ measurement of the spin transition in LaCoO 3 at device-relevant temperatures (25–325 °C) over length scales of tens of nanometers using STEM-EELS. This measurement is enabled by an Al 2 O 3 coating, which prevents unwanted reduction of the LaCoO 3 specimen at high temperature and vacuum. The detailed understanding of LaCoO 3 transition dynamics enabled by such measurements will be crucial for optimizing LaCoO 3 -based neuromorphic devices and increasing reliability for real-world application.

Concurrent Pressure-Induced Spin-State Transitions and Jahn–Teller Distortions in MnTe

Cooperative Jahn-Teller (JT) distrotion accompanied by electromagnetic-lattice coupling plays a crucial role in numerous important phenomena in materials science. The JT distortion occurring in high-spin 3d 4 and 3d 9 configurations in octahedral complexes is common, but similarly large distortion due to lifting the degeneracy of t 2g orbits has so far seldomly observed. Here we report the discovery of pressure-induced cooperative JT effect coupled with a large volume-collapse of ~12.8% and a magnetic moment collapse from S = 5/2 to S = 1/2 at ~20.9 GPa in MnTe. The first-principles calculation indicates that weakened p-d hybridization and enhanced d states localization result in lifting t 2g orbital degeneracy in Mn 2+ (d 5 ) which induced a cooperative JT effect-triggered electromagnetic-lattice coupling. Furthermore, these findings suggest a new mechanism for the cooperative JT distortion via pressure induced ligand distortion in antiferromagnetic materials.

Introduction of localized spin-state transitions in the optical absorption spectrum of Cr-doped GaN

Using a hybrid density functional, we study the electronic, magnetic, and neutral excitations of the paradigmatic Cr-doped GaN solid. Our results indicate that the ≈1% doped wurtzite GaN crystal retains the semiconducting nature of the host, associated with a magnetic moment of 3 μ B . Further, as a consequence of Cr doping, additional hybridized bands are formed within the intrinsic band gap of GaN, leading to a considerable band gap narrowing by 1.4 eV and low-energy optical transitions. Our results indicate dark Cr d-d transitions at very low energy (0.5–0.7 eV), followed by bright transitions in the visible energy range (1.8–2.2 eV). Characterization of the electron-hole pairs suggests that the latter originates from the internal transitions among hybridized Cr d –N p states. With the existence of these additional optical features within the visible energy window, one can expect an enhancement to the photoelectric conversion efficiency of GaN upon Cr doping, in addition to applications in spintronics.

DFT Plus DMFT Study of Spin-Charge-Lattice Coupling in Covalnt LaCoO{siub 3}.

We study energetics and the nature of both homogeneous and mixed spin (MS) states in LaCoO3 incorporating structural changes of the crystal volume expansion and the Co-O bond disproportionation (BD) during the spin-state transition using the density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT + DMFT) method. DFT + DMFT predicts that energetics of both excited spin states are almost the same while DFT + U calculations of the same structures energetically favor the MS states and produce various metastable solutions whose energetics depend sensitively on final spin states. Within DFT + DMFT, the homogeneous spin state in the expanded crystal volume shows the multiconfigurational nature with non-negligible occupancy probabilities of both high spin (HS) and low spin (LS) states along with d(6) and d(7) charge configurations indicating the dynamically fluctuating nature of spin and charge states due to the Co-O covalency. The nature of the MS state under the BD structure reveals that Co sites with the long Co-O bonds develop a Mott insulating state and favor HS with a d(6) configuration, while more covalent Co sites with the short Co-O bonds occupy more LS states with a d(7) configuration and behave as a band insulator, as a result, charge ordering is induced in the BD structure from the spin-state ordering. We also find that both energetics and electronic structure sensitively depend on the Co-O covalency effect, which can be tuned by changing the double counting potential and the resulting d occupancy (N-d), and N-d close to 6.7 is consistent with the nature of the spin-state transition. Our results show that structural changes during the spin-state transition can play an important role in understanding energetics and electronic structure of LaCoO3.

Quantized synchrotron radiation in strong magnetic fields

Spectra from electrons making synchrotron transitions in high magnetic fields are calculated using the exact quantum transition rates for Landau states up to n = 500, and the results are compared with spectra calculated from the classical formula and the asymptotic quantum formula. The behavior of the transition rates are examined at low and high harmonics as a function of the spin state of the electron. The calculations confirm those of Herold, Ruder, and Wunner (1982) for low Landau states, extending them to higher states and individual spin state transitions. The results also confirm the dominance of ground-state transitions at high field strengths noted by White (1976). Single particle emissivities for electrons with both spin-up and spin-down in the initial state are calculated using these transition rates. Spectra for thermal electron distributions at transrelativistic temperatures and for steady state injection of monoenergetic electrons with isotropic pitch angles are also presented.

Selective, adsorbate-induced spin state changes in transition metal-based metal-organic frameworks

An adsorbate-selective metal organic framework includes a transition metal; and a plurality of organic molecules coordinated to the transition metal so as to preserve open coordination sites for selectively adsorbing molecules that have low-lying π* orbitals. The transition metal has a lowest energy spin state in the presence of the selectively adsorbed molecules that are strongly bonding to the transition metal through π-donating interactions which is different than the lowest energy spin state in the absence of these adsorbed molecules. The transition metal has also a lowest energy spin state in the presence of non-selected molecules that are weakly bonding to the transition metal through σ- and/or π-accepting and/or donating interactions.

Surface Charge and Electrostatic Spin Crossover Effects in CoN 4 Electrocatalysts

Carbon materials doped with nitrogen and 3d transition metals have attracted a great deal of interest for catalyzing electrochemical reactions such as water splitting, oxygen reduction, and carbon dioxide reduction. Here, we employed density functional theory to study Co–N-doped carbon as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. Specifically, we investigated the interplay among adsorption energies, the spin state of the CoN 4 active center, and the applied potential. We found that adsorption energies strongly depend on both the applied potential and the spin state of the Co center. Furthermore, spin state transitions induced by the applied potential also play an important role in determining the adsorption energies. Here, this effect originates from a different potential of zero charge and capacitance of each spin state.

On the Emergence of Ferromagnetism in LaCoO 3 Ultrathin Films

It is well known that the properties of a crystal evolve as it increases in size from a single atomic plane to that of the bulk. Such size-dependent transitions can stem from many different origins and depend on minute changes to crystal bonding and composition. Here, a model example is that of LaCoO 3 , which is non-magnetic in the bulk but can display ferromagnetism at the nanoscale. Here, the evolution of structure-property relationships is studied in the LaCoO 3-δ /SrTiO 3 (001) system as the thickness of LaCoO 3-δ is increased from a single plane to 10 unit cells. In situ synchrotron X-ray studies are performed during and post-deposition to probe changes in the interactions between structure, stoichiometry, and magnetic behavior. Structural quantification indicates that the oxygen octahedral rotation pattern evolves with thickness, due to inherent differences in crystal symmetry between the film and substrate. The change in rotation modifies the required energy barrier for the spin state transition via the Co–O bond length and Co–O–Co bond angle, affecting the appearance of ferromagnetism. Our results highlight the contributions of high spin Co 2+ and/or high spin Co 3+ to respective weak and robust ferromagnetism and the evolution of properties with size in ultrathin LaCoO 3-δ heterostructures.

Non-magnetic ion site disorder effects on the quantum magnetism of a spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet

Here, with the motivation to study how non-magnetic ion site disorder affects the quantum magnetism of Ba 3 CoSb 2 O 9 , a spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet, we performed DC and AC susceptibility, specific heat, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystalline samples of Ba 2.87 Sr 0.13 CoSb 2 O 9 with Sr doping on non-magnetic Ba 2+ ion sites. The results show that Ba 2.87 Sr 0.13 CoSb 2 O 9 exhibits (i) a two-step magnetic transition at 2.7 K and 3.3 K, respectively; (ii) a possible canted 120 degree spin structure at zero field with reduced ordered moment as 1.24 μ B /Co; (iii) a series of spin state transitions for both H∥ab-plane and H∥c-axis. For H∥ab-plane, the magnetization plateau feature related to the up–up–down phase is significantly suppressed; (iv) an inelastic neutron scattering spectrum with only one gapped mode at zero field, which splits to one gapless and one gapped mode at 9 T. All these features are distinctly different from those observed for the parent compound Ba 3 CoSb 2 O 9 , which demonstrates that the non-magnetic ion site disorder (the Sr doping) plays a complex role on the magnetic properties beyond the conventionally expected randomization of the exchange interactions. We propose the additional effects including the enhancement of quantum spin fluctuations and introduction of a possible spatial anisotropy through the local structural distortions.

Ultrafast Jahn‐Teller Photoswitching in Cobalt Single‐Ion Magnets

Abstract Single‐ion magnets (SIMs) constitute the ultimate size limit in the quest for miniaturizing magnetic materials. Several bottlenecks currently hindering breakthroughs in quantum information and communication technologies could be alleviated by new generations of SIMs displaying multifunctionality. Here, ultrafast optical absorption spectroscopy and X‐ray emission spectroscopy are employed to track the photoinduced spin‐state switching of the prototypical complex [Co(terpy) 2 ] 2+ (terpy = 2,2′:6′,2″‐terpyridine) in solution phase. The combined measurements and their analysis supported by density functional theory (DFT), time‐dependent‐DFT (TD‐DFT) and multireference quantum chemistry calculations reveal that the complex undergoes a spin‐state transition from a tetragonally elongated doublet state to a tetragonally compressed quartet state on the femtosecond timescale, i.e., it sustains ultrafast Jahn‐Teller (JT) photoswitching between two different spin multiplicities. Adding new Co‐based complexes as possible contenders in the search for JT photoswitching SIMs will greatly widen the possibilities for implementing magnetic multifunctionality and eventually controlling ultrafast magnetization with optical photons.
