Probing polarization-tunable sub-terahertz spin pumping in bimodal α-Fe 2 O 3 /Pt

Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) is an insulating antiferromagnet possessing a room temperature canted phase induced by the super-exchange Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI), resulting in enhanced spin pumping and spin transport over uniaxial antiferromagnets. In this work we resonantly excite the quasi-ferromagnetic (acoustic) and purely antiferromagnetic (optical) spin-dynamical modes in bulk and thin-film heterostructures of α-Fe 2 O 3 /Pt at room temperature, inducing inverse-spin-Hall-voltages up to 255 GHz. Following recent measurements of optical-mode spin-pumping in α-Fe 2 O 3 , we observe a novel and exotic microwave polarization mapping along with amplified spin-charge conversion in the optical branch and discuss the implications of layer thickness on acoustic and optical spin-modes. The results provide a deeper understanding of spin-wave selection rules for canted antiferromagnets and their potential use in nanoscale terahertz spintronics.

Equilibrium spin polarization arising from chirality

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) describes how chiral molecules and materials generate spin polarization even at thermal equilibrium. This observation has challenged established principles of microscopic reversibility and Onsager reciprocity. We resolve this paradox by formulating a pseudo-Hermitian quantum framework that separates thermodynamic equilibrium from time-reversal symmetry. Within this approach, structural chirality and electron correlations, irrespective of their microscopic origin, are sufficient to produce CISS observables. Chirality enters through a non-local metric η that couples spin and spatial motion, leading to real spectra, unitary evolution, and thermodynamic consistency. The framework predicts a chirality-induced spin magnetic ordering characterized by a spin-displacement order, which reconciles equilibrium spin polarization with detailed balance and explains the persistence of CISS in materials composed of light elements. We derive generalized Onsager-Casimir relations that respect the observed CISS symmetry, i.e., parity $(\mathscr{P})$-odd and time-reversal $(\mathscr{T})$-odd, but exhibiting $\mathscr{PT}$-even symmetry. This approach establishes a coherent foundation for equilibrium CISS and provides a route to link chemical chirality with measurable spin-to-charge conversion effects.

Ultrafast Inverse Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity Observed by THz Emission

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) phenomena arise from an interplay among structural chirality, electron spin orientation, and charge current. Steady-state observations such as magnetoresistance offer little insight into the timescales that govern the spin-charge interconversion and often conflate interfacial and bulk phenomena. By contrast, inverse CISS involves the conversion of spin to a charge current. Using terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy, we directly measured an ultrafast charge current due to inverse CISS with picosecond time resolution. Polarity and polarization analysis of the THz emission map the induced charge current direction upon spin injection. We found that a charge current is generated along the spin orientation that changes direction with stereochemical configuration. These observations directly demonstrate the inherent coupling between spin and charge currents in chiral systems, offering key insights into their fundamental dynamics.
