Emergence of Spinons in Layered Trimer Iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10

Spinons are well-known as the elementary excitations of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains, but means to realize spinons in higher dimensions is the subject of intense research. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to study the layered trimer iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 , which shows no magnetic order down to 0.2 K. An emergent one-dimensional spinon continuum is observed that can be well-described by XXZ spin-1/2 chains with magnetic exchange of ~55 meV and a small Ising-like anisotropy. With 2% isovalent Sr doping, magnetic order appears below TN=130 K along with sharper excitations, indicating that the spinons become more confined in (Ba 1-x Sr x ) 4 Ir 3 O 10 . We propose that the frustrated intra-trimer interactions effectively reduce the system into decoupled spin chains, the subtle balance of which can be easily tipped by perturbations such as chemical doping. Our results put Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 between the one-dimensional chain and two-dimensional quantum spin liquid scenarios, illustrating a new way to suppress magnetic order and realize fractional spinons.

Interaction of magnetic fields with spinons in a fractionalized state

The 4d-electron trimer lattice Ba₄Nb₁₋ₓRu₃₊ₓO₁₂ exhibits either a quantum spin liquid (QSL) or a heavy-fermion strange metal (HFSM) phase, depending on Nb content. In the QSL state, itinerant spinons act as effective heat carriers, enhancing thermal conductivity. Strikingly, applying a magnetic field up to 14 T causes an abrupt, up-to-5000% increase in heat capacity below 150 mK, disrupting the linear temperature dependence typical of both phases. Meanwhile, AC susceptibility and electrical resistivity remain nearly unchanged, while thermal conductivity drops by up to 40% below 4 K. These results suggest spinons, despite being charge-neutral, are highly sensitive to magnetic fields at low temperatures. We propose that the magnetic field could induce Anderson localization of spinons, creating emergent non-magnetic two-level systems responsible for the Schottky-like anomaly in heat capacity. These findings point to a previously unexplored regime of spinon dynamics, potentially governed by field-induced localization and distinct from conventional magnetic or transport signatures.

Evidence for a spinon Kondo effect in cobalt atoms on single-layer 1T-TaSe 2

Quantum spin liquids are highly entangled, disordered magnetic states that are expected to arise in frustrated Mott insulators and to exhibit exotic fractional excitations such as spinons and chargons. Despite being electrical insulators, some quantum spin liquids are predicted to exhibit gapless itinerant spinons that yield metallic behaviour in the charge-neutral spin channel. For this study, we deposited isolated magnetic atoms onto single-layer 1T-TaSe 2 , a candidate gapless spin liquid, to probe how itinerant spinons couple to impurity spin centres. Using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy, we observe the emergence of new, impurity-induced resonance peaks at the 1T-TaSe 2 Hubbard band edges when cobalt adatoms are positioned to have maximal spatial overlap with the local charge distribution. These resonance peaks disappear when the spatial overlap is reduced or when the magnetic impurities are replaced with nonmagnetic impurities. Theoretical simulations of a modified Anderson impurity model show that the observed peaks are consistent with a Kondo resonance induced by spinons combined with spin-charge binding effects that arise due to fluctuations of an emergent gauge field.

Spinon excitations and spin correlations in the one-dimensional quantum magnet β -VOSO 4 probed by Raman spectroscopy

Fractionalized excitations such as spinons and anyons have emerged as a central theme in condensed matter physics with broad implications for superconductivity, quantum statistics, and quantum computation. The nearly ideal one-dimensional S = 1/2 system β-VOSO 4 without long-range order down to 85 mK provides a promising platform to experimentally explore such fractionalized excitations. Here, we employ Raman spectroscopy to probe magnetic excitations and the evolution of spin correlations in β-VOSO 4 . Spinon signatures are found along the chain direction, evidenced by a broad, gapless scattering continuum at low temperatures. The temperature dependence of the spinon spectral weight aligns considerably with numerical density matrix renormalization group calculations. By comparing the experimental spinon spectral weight with calculated results and evaluating the associated quantum Fisher information (QFI) therefrom, we observe a steep increase in QFI upon cooling, indicating rapidly growing correlation lengths. Our study showcases QFI as a probe of spin correlations in quantum magnets.

Magnetic impurity as a local probe of the $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface

We solve the problem of a magnetic impurity coupled to a U(1) quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface, and we compute the impurity spectral function. Using the slave rotor mean-field approach combined with gauge field fluctuations, we find that a peak located at the top of the lower Hubbard band and one at the bottom of the upper Hubbard band can emerge in the impurity spectral function. The peaks at the Hubbard band edges arise from the gauge field fluctuation-induced spinon-chargon binding inside the spinon Kondo screening cloud of the magnetic impurity. For a magnetic impurity embedded in a Mott insulator, our findings suggest that the emergence of a pair of peaks at the Hubbard band edges in the impurity density of states spectra provides strong evidence that the host Mott insulator is a U(1) quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface.

Spinons and damped phonons in the spin- 1 2 quantum liquid Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 observed by Raman scattering

In spin-1/2 Mott insulators, nonmagnetic quantum liquid phases are often argued to arise when the system shows no magnetic ordering, but identifying positive signatures of these phases or related spinon quasiparticles can be elusive. Here, we use Raman scattering to provide three signatures for spinons in a possible spin-orbit quantum liquid material Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 : (1) a broad hump, which we show can arise from Luttinger liquid spinons in Raman with parallel photon polarizations normal to one-dimensional chains; (2) strong phonon damping from phonon-spin coupling via the spin-orbit interaction; and (3) the absence of (1) and (2) in the magnetically ordered phase that is produced when 2% of Ba is substituted by Sr [(Ba 0.98 Sr 0.02 ) 4 Ir 3 O 10 ]. Furthermore, the phonon damping via itinerant spinons seen in this quantum liquid insulator suggests a mechanism for enhancing thermoelectricity in strongly correlated conductors, through a neutral quantum liquid that need not affect electronic transport.

Coexistence and Interaction of Spinons and Magnons in an Antiferromagnet with Alternating Antiferromagnetic and Ferromagnetic Quantum Spin Chains

In conventional quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets with quantum spins, magnetic excitations are carried by either magnons or spinons in different energy regimes: they do not coexist independently, nor could they interact with each other. In this Letter, by combining inelastic neutron scattering, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Random Phase Approximation calculations, we report the discovery and discuss the physics of the coexistence of magnons and spinons and their interactions in Botallackite-Cu 2 (OH) 3 Br. This is a unique quantum antiferromagnet consisting of alternating ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 chains with weak interchain couplings. Furthermore, our study presents a new paradigm where one can study the interaction between two different types of magnetic quasiparticles: magnons and spinons.

High-temperature quantum coherence of spinons in a rare-earth spin chain

Conventional wisdom dictates that quantum effects become unimportant at high temperatures. In magnets, when the thermal energy exceeds interactions between atomic magnetic moments, the moments are usually uncorrelated, and classical paramagnetic behavior is observed. This thermal decoherence of quantum spin behaviors is a major hindrance to quantum information applications of spin systems. Remarkably, our neutron scattering experiments on Yb chains in an insulating perovskite crystal defy these conventional expectations. We find a sharply defined spectrum of spinons, fractional quantum excitations of spin-1/2 chains, to persist to temperatures much higher than the scale of the interactions between Yb magnetic moments. The observed sharpness of the spinon continuum’s dispersive upper boundary indicates a spinon mean free path exceeding ≈ 35 inter-atomic spacings at temperatures more than an order of magnitude above the interaction energy scale. We thus discover an important and highly unique quantum behavior, which expands the realm of quantumness to high temperatures where entropy-governed classical behaviors were previously believed to dominate. Our results have profound implications for spin systems in quantum information applications operating at finite temperatures and motivate new developments in quantum metrology.

Spinon mediation of witness spin dynamics in herbertsmithite

The kagome lattice of spin-1/2 copper atoms in herbertsmithite is conjectured to sustain a quantum spin liquid state with spinon quasiparticles. Ideally, the kagome crystal planes are each separated by a plane of spinless zinc atoms. However, in real crystals, some spin-1/2 copper atoms substitute randomly onto these inter-kagome zinc sites. Here we reconceptualize such ‘impurity’ atoms as quantum witness spins whose dynamics is designed to probe the spin liquid state. We then introduce spin noise spectroscopy to measure the frequency and temperature dependence of witness spin dynamics, demonstrating that their phenomenology is consistent with extensive interactions between witness spins mediated by propagation of spinons through a quantum spin liquid. Ultimately, a sharp transition occurs at around 260 mK, below which the properties of both spin noise and magnetic susceptibility suggest that the witness spins form a spin glass phase. Among the theoretical models considered, we demonstrate that our observations are only consistent with spinon-mediated interactions between witness spins by either a Z 2 or U(1) quantum spin liquid, with the former model more closely matching the data. Our work demonstrates that quantum mechanical witness spins may now conceivably be used as a widely applicable probe of quantum spin liquid physics.

Electronic density of states of a U ( 1 ) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface. II. Zeeman magnetic field effects

The Zeeman effect lowers the energy of electrons with spin states which are antiparallel to the applied magnetic field but lifts that of spin parallel states. In quantum spin liquids where the spin and charge degrees of freedom are fractionalized, an anomalous Zeeman response may be expected. In the case of spin liquids with a spinon Fermi surface, the threshold energy to excite an electronic state is found to exhibit no Zeeman shift. This is specific to the spinon Fermi surface case. In contrast, other gapped spin liquids are expected to exhibit the standard Zeeman shift at the band edge even though they also exhibit spin-charge fractionalization. Further, when gauge-field fluctuations are included, we find that the Zeeman shift of the electronic states gets affected by the gauge field induced binding. In the electronic density of states spectra, weak gauge binding induces band-edge resonance peaks which exhibit the Zeeman shift in the same direction as that in the standard Zeeman effect, but the shift is reduced as the binding potential increases. With further increase in the binding potential, the resonance becomes true in-gap bound states and eventually the Zeeman shift direction reverses so it is opposite to the standard Zeeman effect. We propose that one can perform spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscope measurements as a test of the spinon Fermi sea ground state in quantum spin liquid candidate materials.

Doping Dependence of 2-Spinon Excitations in the Doped 1D Cuprate Ba 2 ⁢CuO 3+δ

Recent photoemission experiments on the quasi-one-dimensional Ba-based cuprates suggest that doped holes experience an attractive potential not captured using the simple Hubbard model. This observation has garnered significant attention due to its potential relevance to Cooper pair formation in high-T c cuprate superconductors. To scrutinize this assertion, we examined signatures of such an attractive potential in doped 1D cuprates Ba 2 ⁢CuO 3+δ by measuring the dispersion of the 2-spinon excitations using Cu L 3 -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Upon doping, the 2-spinon excitations appear to weaken, with a shift of the minimal position corresponding to the nesting vector of the Fermi points, q F . Notably, we find that the energy scale of the 2-spinons near the Brillouin zone boundary is substantially softened compared to that predicted by the Hubbard model in one dimension. Finally, such a discrepancy implies missing ingredients, which lends support for the presence of an additional attractive potential between holes.

Spectroscopic Demarcation of Emergent Photons and Spinons in a Dipolar-Octupolar Quantum Spin Liquid

The identification of fractionalized excitations in quantum spin liquids (QSLs) remains a central challenge in condensed matter physics. In dipolar-octupolar (DO) pyrochlores, such as Ce 2⁢ Zr 2 ⁢O 7 , the candidate 𝜋-flux quantum spin ice (QSI) state is predicted to host both gapless emergent photons and a continuum of spinons. However, resolving these modes at zero field is complicated by their spectral overlap and the presence of nonmagnetic scattering near zero energy. Here, in this study, we report neutron scattering experiments on Ce 2 ⁢Zr 2 ⁢O 7 under a magnetic field along the [1, 1, 1] direction. In contrast to previous unpolarized studies at zero field that relied on high-temperature subtraction, we use a same-temperature high-field subtraction protocol to isolate the photon and spinon modes. Leveraging the selective coupling of the magnetic field to the dipolar degrees of freedom, we demonstrate the spectroscopic demarcation of these excitations. We observe that weak fields (≈ 0.15 T) suppress the low-energy photon weight while leaving the high-energy spinon continuum robust, albeit hardened. Our results, supported by gauge mean-field theory and exact diagonalization calculations, provide strong evidence for the 𝜋-flux QSI state and introduce a powerful field-tuning protocol for investigating DO-QSLs.

Spinon excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional $S = \frac{1}{2}$ chain compound Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12

The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is ideal for realizing one of the simplest gapless quantum spin liquids (QSLs), supporting a many-body ground state whose elementary excitations are fractional fermionic excitations called spinons. Here we report the discovery of such a one-dimensional (1D) QSL in Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 . Compared to previously reported $S = \frac{1}{2}$ 1D chains, this material possesses a wider temperature range over which the QSL state is stabilized. In this work, we identify spinon excitations extending at $\textit{T}$ > 0.8 K, with a large $\textit{T}$-linear contribution to the specific heat, γ = 31.5(2)mJ mol –1 K –2 , which contribute itinerantly to thermal transport up to temperatures as high as $\textit{T}$ = 35 K. At $\textit{T}$ = 0.7 K , we find a second-order phase transition that is unchanged by a $μ_0H = 5T$ magnetic field. Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 reveals new phenomenology deep in the 1D QSL regime, supporting a gapped QSL phase over a wide temperature range compared to many other experimental realizations.

Kondo enabled transmutation between spinons and superconducting vortices: Origin of magnetic memory in 4 H b − TaS 2

Recent experiments [Persky , ] demonstrate a magnetic memory effect in 4 H b − TaS 2 above its superconducting transition temperature, where Abriokosov vortices are spontaneously generated by lowering the temperature at zero magnetic field after field training the normal state. Motivated by the experiment, we propose the chiral quantum spin liquid (QSL) stabilized in the constituent layers of 4 H b − TaS 2 as a mechanism. We model 4 H b − TaS 2 as coupled layers of the chiral QSL and the superconductor. Through the Kondo coupling between the localized moments and conduction electrons, there is mutual transmutation between spinons and vortices during the thermal-cycling process, which yields the magnetic memory effect observed in experiments. We also propose a mechanism to stabilize chiral and nematic superconductivity in 4 H b − TaS 2 through the Kondo coupling of conduction electrons to the chiral QSL. Our picture suggests 4 H b − TaS 2 as an exciting platform to explore the interplay between QSL and superconductivity through the Kondo effect. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Magnon-spinon dichotomy in the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb β-Li 2 IrO 3

The family of edge-sharing tricoordinated iridates and ruthenates has emerged in recent years as a major platform for Kitaev spin-liquid physics, where spins fractionalize into emergent magnetic fluxes and Majorana fermions with Dirac-like dispersions. While such exotic states are usually preempted by long-range magnetic order at low temperatures, signatures of Majorana fermions with long coherent times have been predicted to manifest at intermediate and higher energy scales, similar to the observation of spinons in quasi-one-dimensional spin chains. Here in this paper we present a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb iridate β-Li 2 IrO 3 under a magnetic field with a record-high-resolution spectrometer. At low temperatures, dispersing spin waves can be resolved around the predicted intertwined incommensurate spiral and field-induced zigzag orders, whose excitation energy reaches a maximum of 16 meV. A 2 T magnetic field softens the dispersion around Q = 0. The behavior of the spin waves under magnetic field is consistent with our semiclassical calculations for the ground state and the dynamical spin structure factor, which further predicts that the ensued intertwined uniform states remain robust up to very high fields (100 T). Most saliently, the low-energy magnonlike mode is superimposed by a broad continuum of excitations, centered around 35 meV and extending up to 100 meV. This high-energy continuum survives up to at least 300 K—well above the ordering temperature of 38 K—and gives evidence for pairs of long-lived Majorana fermions of the proximate Kitaev spin liquid.

Electronic density of states of a U ( 1 ) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface. I. Orbital magnetic field effects

A quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface is an exotic insulator that hosts neutral Fermi surfaces inside the insulating gap. In an external magnetic field, it has been pointed out that the neutral Fermi surfaces are Landau quantized to form Landau levels due to the coupling to the induced emergent gauge magnetic field. In this paper, we calculate the electronic density of states (as observed in tunneling experiments) of the quantum spin liquid in an orbital magnetic field. Here, we find that the Landau levels from the neutral Fermi surfaces give rise to a set of steps emerging at the upper and lower Hubbard band edges. Each of the Hubbard band edge steps further develop into a band edge resonance peak when a weak gauge binding arising from the gauge field fluctuations is taken into account. Importantly, each Hubbard band edge step and its resulting resonance peak in the weak gauge binding are found to have a corresponding Landau level from the neutral Fermi surfaces, so the Hubbard band edge steps and the band edge resonance peaks provide signatures to the unique feature that characterizes the Landau quantization of the in-gap neutral Fermi surfaces in the spin liquid. We further consider the strong gauge-binding regime where the band edge resonance peaks move into the Mott gap and develop into true in-gap bound states. In the strong gauge binding regime, we solve the Landau-level spectrum of the in-gap bound states in an orbital magnetic field. For the in-gap bound state with a Mexican-hat-like band dispersion, we find that the envelop energy to have a state excited from the bound state Landau levels decreases quadratically with the magnetic field. The quadratic decrease behavior of the envelop energy is consistent with the intuition that applying magnetic field localizes the states and energetically promotes the in-gap bound states formation. Finally, we discuss the connection of our results to the electronic density of states spectra measured in the layered 1T-TaS 2 . We point out that a quantum spin liquid with a quasibound state in the upper Hubbard band can give the density of states spectra similar to the one measured in the experiment.

Spinon continuum in the Heisenberg quantum chain compound Sr 2 ⁢V 3 ⁢O 9

Magnetic excitations in the spin chain candidate Sr 2 ⁢V 3 ⁢O 9 have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. A spinon continuum with a bandwidth of ~22 meV is observed along the chain formed by alternating magnetic V 4+ and nonmagnetic V 5+ ions, which reveals the importance of the orbital degree of freedom in determining the chain axis as identified by prior electronic structure calculations. Incipient magnetic Bragg peaks due to weak ferromagnetic interchain couplings emerge when approaching the magnetic transition at T N ~ 5.3 K, while the excitations remain gapless within the instrumental resolution. Comparisons to the Bethe ansatz, density matrix renormalization group calculations, and effective field theories confirm Sr 2 ⁢V 3 ⁢O 9 as a host of weakly coupled S = 1/2 chains dominated by antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions of ~7.1(1) meV.

Spectroscopy of Spinons in Coulomb Quantum Spin Liquids

We calculate the effect of the emergent photon on threshold production of spinons in U(1) Coulomb spin liquids such as quantum spin ice. The emergent Coulomb interaction modifies the threshold production cross-section dramatically, changing the weak turn-on expected from the density of states to an abrupt onset reflecting the basic coupling parameters. The slow photon typical in existing lattice models and materials suppresses the intensity at finite momentum and allows profuse Cerenkov radiation beyond a critical momentum. Furthermore, these features are broadly consistent with recent numerical and experimental results.
