Heat transfer model for predicting squib ignition times

A squib ignition model based on transient heat condition from the hot bridgewire to the pyrotechnic is described. No Arrhenius-type chemical reaction is included. Instead, a thermal contact resistance is postulated to exist between the hot bridgewire and the pyrotechnic. Ignition is assumed to occur when a 2.5 micron layer of pyrotechnic next to the bridgewire reaches a characteristic ignition temperature for that pyrotechnic. This model was applied to the JPL squib, which uses a 50 micron (0.002-in.) diameter Tophet A bridgewire to ignite a boron, potassium perchlorate mix. A computer program was utilized that solves the transient heat condition problem with the boundary conditions stipulated by the model. The thermal contact conductance at the interface was determined by trial and error so that the experimentally determined ignition time for one firing condition would be properly predicted by the model. The agreement was quite good for tests run between -129 C and +93.3 C at current levels of 3.5 and 5 A. Axial heat conduction along the bridgewire is shown to be negligible.

NSI-1 Squib adapter development and final test report for usage on space shuttle gas sampler valve/bottle assembly 3270

The possibility of utilizing the NSI-1 squib in place cartridge assembly 2270 for the function of both events required for the Space Shuttle Gas Sampler Valve/Bottle Assembly 3270 was determined. Additionally, it was a requirement that the closure disk of the NSI-1 squib and explosive residue therefrom be retained from the valve cavity in so far as possible to prevent any significant particulate from scratching the valve bore and causing sample leakage following the postfire 2 event.

Squib-operated disconnect

Disconnect device is described, which consists of stud with enlarged end held in collet locked by pins, which are held in place by piston. When squib is fired, trapped combustion products force piston to release pins.

Centrally-Rupturing Squib-Closure Disks

Rupture-disk design makes squib action more predictable. In new design, center of rupture disk contains cruciform indentation in which thickness reduced to about 0.5 mil (0.013 mm). Reduces strength of center of rupture disk in same manner as that of pull tabs on beverage cans; therefore, disk will fail predictably in center.

Transient Structure Current Generated by the Activation of a Squib Device

Experimental measurements of the currents in pyro-activation circuits show that a structure current is generated during the pyro-activation process. This current is a transient current and is an intense source of electromagnetic interference. Analysis has indicated that the noise voltage induced on candidate victim circuits is sufficient to cause circuit upset and/or latchup. A survey of flight anomaly records has also correlated the occurrence of anomalies with the pyro-activation process. Detailed analyses, taking the spacecraft cabling configuration and circuit sensitivities into account, have shown that the structure current induced noise voltage could definitely be the cause of the anomalies. The threat of the structure current due to pyro-activation can be alleviated by isolating the pyro-activation circuit from ground and by proper arrangement of the cables in sensitive circuits.

Cleanly Burning Squib

Ignition wire repositioned to suppress unburned particles. In new configuration, ignition coil located near top of combustion chamber. As charge burns, unburned portion held at bottom of chamber. Little or no unburned charge ejected. Nearly uniform pressure generated, and only gases ejected from combustion chamber.

Quick-closing valve is actuated by explosive discharge

Remotely controlled plug-type valve shuts off a high-pressure, high-temperature gas flow in a few milliseconds. The valve is actuated by a commercially available electrically initiated squib of low explosive power. More rapid closure is attainable with squibs containing heavier explosive changes.
