Experiments, Statistical Analysis, and Modeling to Evaluate the Porosity Influence in SPS Coatings

Suspension plasma spray (SPS) is far more complicated than conventional plasma spray and requires a deep knowledge about the influence of process parameters and their correlations. In this study, YSZ coatings were manufactured by SPS with six different process parameters such as plasma power, suspension mass load, original powder size, substrate surface topology, spray distance, and spray step. Then, the porosity of as-prepared coatings was investigated by image method and X-ray transmission technique. A multivariate analysis on the collected experimental data was carried out by employing mathematical statistics methods. The results showed that: 1) Coating porosity has a negative correlation with plasma power and suspension mass load and a positive correlation with the original powder size, spray distance, spray step, and substrate roughness; 2) Spraying distance is the main factor affecting to coating porosity, followed by suspension mass load and substrate surface roughness, respectively. A linear model for porosity prediction was developed and was verified by experiments. Furthermore, the mechanism by which process parameters influence coating porosity is additionally discussed.

Median Statistics Analysis of Deuterium Abundance Measurements and Spatial Curvature Constraints

Zavarygin et al. compiled a list of 15 deuterium abundance measurements; two were discarded because the remaining 13 measurements are then consistent with Gaussianity. Here, those authors found that the weighted-mean baryon density (Ω b h 2) determined from the 13 measurements is mildly discrepant (1.6σ) with that determined from the Planck 2015 cosmic microwave background anisotropy data in a flat cosmogony. We find that a median statistic central estimate of Ω b h 2 from all 15 deuterium abundance measurements is a more accurate estimate; is very consistent with Ω b h 2 estimated from Planck 2015 data in a flat cosmogony, but is about 2σ lower than that found in a closed cosmogonical model from the Planck 2015 data.

Statistical analysis of historic hydrocarbon production data from Gulf of Mexico oil and gas fields and application to dynamic capacity assessment in CO 2 storage

Numerical modeling of CO 2 injection and reservoir flow is typically performed to forecast the number of wells, sustainable injection rates, and total storage volume (or mass). A critical determination for CO 2 storage in depleted oil and gas reservoirs is characterization of reservoir compartmentalization which informs boundary conditions in simulating injection scenarios. Constraining boundary conditions during CO 2 injection into geological formations is a key factor for feasible deployment project. Production history data from 616 wells in 100 oil and gas fields from Gulf of Mexico (GOM) offshore basin can be used to evaluate boundary conditions and total production (oil and gas) and therefor constrain the capacity for potential carbon storage. In general, the combination of decline curve analysis and statistical analysis (to specify constraining boundary conditions) allows the determination of the range of reservoir performance if existing inactive production wells in GOM area of study are used reversibly for CO 2 injection. To constrain the mass of CO 2 which can be injected, it is useful to consider estimates of cumulative bulk (hydrocarbon + brine) production (CBP), which can be converted to equivalent CO 2 mass considering reservoir conditions. Summary CBP statistics are presented as a probability of non-exceedance (PNE), providing a forecast of likely injection rates and masses for other located CO 2 storage projects with similar geology and boundary conditions in the future. The 50% PNE for Equivalent CO 2 is a novel quantitative approach to investigate the possible injection capacity in CO 2 storage projects. The PNE sensitivity analysis shows that reservoir age, drive mechanism, reservoir trap, and reservoir porosity are the key controlling parameters for productivity and consequently optimum CO 2 storage capacity. Furthermore another key finding is the negligible correlation between CBP with reservoir transmissivity and porosity, which implies that other factors than just petrophysical parameters should be studied as constraining factors for CO 2 storage statistical analysis.

Statistical Analysis of the Limiting Dynamics of Two dimensional Boussinesq Turbulent Systems

In the current study, we investigate rotational and stratified turbulent systems within the framework of the Boussinesq equations. The effects of rotation and stratification give rise to a variety of dynamical regimes in atmospheric and oceanic turbulence. To develop a better understanding of the fundamental flow properties through a more straightforward mathematical framework, we commence our research with a simplified two-dimensional Boussinesq model that incorporates rotation and stratification effects. We explore two distinct limiting dynamics, considering pure rotation and pure stratification separately. We examine these intriguing dynamics through numerical investigations, applying the exact solution theory of Boussinesq equations and examining small-scale perturbations to the exact solution under rotation and stratification. We conduct an analysis of statistical quantities associated with the turbulent state variables. The results indicate that, under weak rotation at the equilibrium statistical state, the flow field exhibits vortex flow. However, strong rotation transforms the flow into vertical shear flow. We observe both downscale and upscale energy transfers with a decay rate of k −3 in the absence of external forcing and dissipation. Furthermore, we delve into the study of internal gravity wave mode interactions in the simplified two-dimensional Boussinesq system, which is a crucial aspect of geophysical turbulence due to gravity. Our findings reveal that the time series of the mode coefficients exhibit wave-like interactions between wave modes.

Statistical analysis of the performance and long-term stability of unquenched LSC standards ( 3 H, 14 C) used for radiochemical measurements

Multiple sets of toluene-based unquenched standards, procured over the last 3 decades, were analyzed to determine their stability over time. A statistical analysis was performed to provide insight into the variability for tSIE and counting efficiency measurements of 3 H and 14 C isotopes. Our data suggests that standards remain viable even 30 years after the manufacturer’s recommended expiration date. Overall, these standards have shown no statistically significant sign of performance degradation. We have proven through statistical analysis that these standards can provide comparable performance over time well past their manufactured expiration date.

Statistical analysis for the neutrinoless double-β-decay matrix element of 48 Ca

Neutrinoless double-β-decay (0⁢vββ) nuclear matrix elements (NME) are the object of many theoretical calculation methods, and are very important for analysis and guidance of a large number of experimental efforts. However, there are large discrepancies between the NME values provided by different methods. Here, in this paper, we propose a statistical analysis of the 48 Ca 0v⁢ββ NME using the interacting shell model, emphasizing the range of the NME probable values and their correlations with observables that can be obtained from the existing nuclear data. Based on this statistical analysis with three independent effective Hamiltonians, we propose a common probability distribution function for the 0⁢vββ NME, which has a range of (0.45–0.95) at 90% confidence level, and a mean value of 0.68.

A statistical analysis on transcriptome sequences: The enrichment of Alu-element is associated with subcellular location

Highlights: • The enrichment of Alu-element is associated with subcellular location. • mRNAs and lncRNAs share the same sequence form for Alu-element. • Alu-element is preferentially located at the 3′ end. The Alu-element plays important roles in mediating alternative splicing, RNA editing and translation regulation. However, the distribution and function of the Alu-element are never analysed at the transcriptome level. This study presents a statistical analysis of the Alu-element on human transcriptome. We found that mRNAs and lncRNAs share the same sequence form for the Alu-element. The Alu-element covers 5.8% of the coding transcripts and 17.1% of the coding genes for mRNAs, and covers 9.3% of the transcripts and 13.6% of the genes for lncRNAs. The Alu-element is preferentially located at the 3′ end. Statistical analysis demonstrates that the enrichment of Alu-element is associated with subcellular location. For instance, Alu-inclusive transcripts are overexpressed in nucleus, mitochondrion and Golgi apparatus membrane while under-expressed in cell membrane and extracellular space. We found that genes contain both Alu−element and S− domains of 7SL RNA are all associated with cellular activities carried out in mitochondrion.

Statistical Analysis of Rounded Data: Measurement Errors vs Rounding Errors

Since data for statistical analysis are always given in a discretized form, observations contain not only measurement errors but also rounding errors which are determined by the discretization step. In this paper we consider situations where the rounding errors are considerable: they are comparable to or even greater (in average) than the measurement errors. It is shown that it can be reasonable to increase the measurement errors in order to reduce the error of the final result.

Corrosion of rebar in concrete. Part II: Literature survey and statistical analysis of existing data on chloride threshold

The literature is reviewed with respect to defining, measuring, and interpreting the chloride threshold (CT). CT was defined with a strong fundamental basis in the Point Defect Model. which also dictates the nature of the statistical analysis of surveyed CT values. A database of CT for various primary and secondary independent variables has been established. Statistical analyses reveal that CT is lognormally distributed, in accordance with the PDM, with most probable values being 0.85, 0.69, and 1.19 for %total Cl/cem, %free Cl/cem, and [Cl - ]/[OH - ], respectively. The breakdown and corrosion potentials follow normal distributions with means of 0.056 and -0.322 V SCE , respectively.

Statistical analysis of S—N type environmental fatigue data of Ni-base alloy welds using weibull distribution

In this study, the probabilistic fatigue life model for Ni-base alloys was developed based on the Weibull distribution using statistical analysis of fatigue data reported in NUREG/CR-6909 and the new fatigue data of Alloy 52M/152 and 82/182. The developed Weibull model can consider right-censored data (i.e., non-failed data) and quantify the improved safety (or reliability) based on the level of failure probability. The overall margin in the current fatigue design limit model (ASME design curve + NUREG/CR-6909 F en model) is similar to that of the Weibull model with a cumulative failure probability of approximately 2.5%. The margin in the current fatigue design limit model demonstrated inconsistencies for the Ni-base alloy weld data, whereas the Weibull model showed a consistent margin. Therefore, the Weibull model can systematically mitigate the excessive safety margin.

Inter‐area oscillation statistical analysis of the U.S. Eastern interconnection

Although extensive studies have been conducted on inter‐area oscillation detection and analysis by using phasor measurement data, few have focused on inter‐area oscillation statistics due to the lack of considerably long‐term and high‐resolution recorded data. A preliminary statistical analysis on the inter‐area oscillations that occurred in the U.S. Eastern interconnection from 2010 to 2015 is presented. These oscillation events were captured and recorded by the wide‐area frequency monitoring network FNET/GridEye. Oscillation occurrence, dominant frequency, damping ratio and oscillation excitation types are investigated to explore the statistical characteristics of the detected inter‐area oscillations. The results from this paper will provide valuable information for system operators and planners regarding network operation and future grid development.
