Catalog of far-ultraviolet objective-prism spectrophotometry: Skylab experiment S-019, ultraviolet steller astronomy

Ultraviolet stellar spectra in the wavelength region from 1300 to 5000 A (130 to 500) were photographed during the three manned Skylab missions using a 15 cm aperture objective-prism telescope. The prismatic dispersion varied from 58 A mm/1 at 1400 A to 1600 A mm/1 at 3000 A. Approximately 1000 spectra representing 500 stars were measured and reduced to observed fluxes. About 100 stars show absorption lines of Si IV, C IV, or C II. Numerous line features are also recorded in supergiant stars, shell stars, A and F stars, and Wolf-Rayet stars. Most of the stars in the catalog are of spectral class B, with a number of O and A type stars and a sampling of WC, WN, F and C type stars. Spectrophotometric results are tabulated for these 500 stars.

Non-steller light from high-redshift radiogalaxies

With the aid of a new IRCAM image of 3C356, researchers question the common assumption that radiosource-stimulated starbursts are responsible for the extended optical emission aligned with radio structures in high-redshift radiogalaxies. They propose an alternative model in which the radiation from a hidden luminous quasar is beamed along the radio axis and illuminates dense clumps of cool gas to produce both extended narrow emission line regions and, by Thomson scattering, extended optical continua. Simple observational tests of this model are possible and necessary if we are to continue to accept that the color, magnitude and shape evolution of radiogalaxies are controlled by the active evolution of stellar populations.

NASA-NOAA Feasibility Report

The western stock of Steller sea lions and the Aleutian stock of harbor seals both experienced dramatic declines in abundance during the past few decades, particularly in the central and western Aleutian Islands. Both stocks have continued to decline in recent years, thus are a high priority for routine monitoring. NOAA’s Marine Mammal laboratory (MML) has conducted aerial surveys of marine mammals throughout coastal Alaska to monitor trends in population abundance and distribution for more than 20 years. These surveys have typically been conducted from a twinengine aircraft, such as a DHC-6 Twin Otter, operated by NOAA pilots and crewmembers. Aerial surveys in the Aleutian Islands present significant challenges and higher risks due to their remoteness, rugged terrain, and extreme weather. To evaluate the feasibility of transitioning from manned to unmanned aerial surveys in this region, thereby reducing risks to NOAA personnel and high-value aircraft, we propose to conduct test survey flights in the Near Islands of Alaska using a medium-sized, fixed-wing UAV (NASA’s SIERRA-B aircraft) with a nadir-aimed imaging payload. Survey flights are planned to be conducted during daylight hours on days with VFR conditions and less than ~20 knot winds at altitudes of 800-1200 feet. Survey imagery, including thermal video and high-resolution color photos, would be collected at known Steller sea lion and harbor seal sites along the coastlines of Shemya, Nizki, Alaid, Agattu, and Attu Islands. The planning team will request approval and support from the US Air Force to conduct this project at Eareckson Air Station (Shemya Island, AK) during the month of September 2022 when weather conditions in the western Aleutian Islands are expected to be optimal.

Studies of planetary upper atmospheres through occultations

The structure, composition, dynamics and energy balance of planetary upper atmospheres through interpretation of steller occultation data from Uranus is discussed. The wave-optical problem of modelling strong scintillation for arbitrary turbulent atmospheres is studied, as well as influence of turbulence. It was concluded that quasi-global features of atmospheric structure are accurately determined by numerical inversion. Horizontally inhomogeneous structures are filtered out and have little effect on temperature profiles.

A simulation of high energy cosmic ray propagation 1

High energy cosmic ray propagation of the energy region 10 to the 14.5 power - 10 to the 18th power eV is simulated in the inter steller circumstances. In conclusion, the diffusion process by turbulent magnetic fields is classified into several regions by ratio of the gyro-radius and the scale of turbulence. When the ratio becomes larger then 10 to the minus 0.5 power, the analysis with the assumption of point scattering can be applied with the mean free path E sup 2. However, when the ratio is smaller than 10 to the minus 0.5 power, we need a more complicated analysis or simulation. Assuming the turbulence scale of magnetic fields of the Galaxy is 10-30pc and the mean magnetic field strength is 3 micro gauss, the energy of cosmic ray with that gyro-radius is about 10 to the 16.5 power eV.

An Exosat X-ray observation of one orbital cycle of 4U 1700-37/HD 153919

Exosat observations of close to one complete binary cycle of 4U 1700-37/HD 153919 are presented, and X-ray absorption variations are determined as a function of orbital phase in order to study the properties of the stellar wind of the companion HD 153919. The decrease noted in absorption between eclipse egress and phase 0.5 may be due to X-rays from a neutron star being absorbed by an inner wind with a radial velocity law close to that predicted by Castor et al. (1975). Under the assumption that the X-ray source is powered by material captured from the steller wind, the absorption variations with orbital phase and the time-average luminosity have been modeled to investigate the suppression of the radiative acceleration of the wind via the ionization of the wind by the X-ray source.

The kinematics and morphology of NGC 520

New long-slit optical spectroscopy and optical and NIR images of NGC 520 are presented. Velocity-dispersion and radial-velocity profiles are obtained from the spectra with the Fourier quotient and cross-correlation techniques. At the NW optical emission peak, a sharp rise in the velocity dispersions implies a concentration of mass. The NW optical peak is also apparent as a peak in the K-band image, whose NIR colors are consistent with the presence of a typical bulge steller population. These data suggest that the NW peak may be the bulge of one of two galaxies in the system. A larger bulge is clearly evident in the K-band image in the middle of an optical dust lane. The optical colors and H-alpha emission imply that both bulges and the disk of the NW galaxy have experienced recent star formation. The radial-velocity profile in the central 10 arcsec at the larger bulge is consistent with a counterrotating core, in agreement with the CO radial-velocity profile (Sanders et al., 1988). This core could be explained as an accreted gas-rich irregular galaxy which is forming a counterrotating stellar disk.

Probing the tides in interacting galaxy pairs

Detailed spectroscopic and imaging observations of colliding elliptical galaxies revealed unmistakable diagnostic signatures of the tidal interactions. It is possible to compare both the distorted luminosity distributions and the disturbed internal rotation profiles with numerical simulations in order to model the strength of the tidal gravitational field acting within a given pair of galaxies. Using the best-fit numerical model, one can then measure directly the mass of a specific interacting binary system. This technique applies to individual pairs and therefore complements the classical methods of measuring the masses of galaxy pairs in well-defined statistical samples. The 'personalized' modeling of galaxy pairs also permits the derivation of each binary's orbit, spatial orientation, and interaction timescale. Similarly, one can probe the tides in less-detailed observations of disturbed galaxies in order to estimate some of the physical parameters for larger samples of interacting galaxy pairs. These parameters are useful inputs to the more universal problems of (1) the galaxy merger rate, (2) the strength and duration of the driving forces behind tidally stimulated phenomena (e.g., starbursts and maybe quasi steller objects), and (3) the identification of long-lived signatures of interaction/merger events.

Optical and ultraviolet observations of 3C 279 during outburst

An ongoing program of photometric monitoring of selected active galactic nuclei has revealed a significant outburst in the optically violently variable (OVV) quasi-steller object (QSO) 3C 279. The event occurred during May and June of 1992, and was characterized by a peak amplitude of 2.3 mag in the R band. We obtained nearly simultaneous optical and ultraviolet spectroscopy from 1150 to 8600 A of the source at the approximate midpoint of the outburst. The outburst spectrum is well represented by a power law with index alpha = -1.77 (where F(sub nu) varies as nu (exp alpha) which is relatively flat in comparison with typical quiescent spectra for this source. No emission features are discernable in our data, nor is there any significant Lyman-edge absorption. The observations and data analysis procedures are described, and the resulting photometric light curves and spectra are presented. We also present a long baseline photometric light curve for context. Comparisons with previously published optical-UV outburst and quiescent spectra are made, and luminosity-dependent spectral variations are discussed.

A distance of 133-137 parsecs to the Pleiades star cluster

Nearby open clusters of stars (those that are not gravitationally bound)have played a crucial role in the development of steller astronomy because, as a consequence of the stars having a common age, they provide excellent natural laboratories to test theoretical stellar models.

California coast nearshore processes study

The author has identified the following significant results. This report contains the techniques used for enhancing and analyzing nearshore processes from ERTS-1 and aircraft data. Four California nearshore sites are used as test cells including the San Francisco area, Monterey Bay, Santa Barbara Channel, and Los Angeles area. Techniques used for analyzing the test cells included direct photographic processing, computer compatible tape gain change enhancement, discrete point density analysis and plotting, and densitometer enhancement. Using these methods, it is possible to measure the seaward extent of the suspended sediment transport and to differentiate sediment levels within the individual sediment lobes. The movement of riverine discharged suspensates and coastal sediments by currents was an intricate part of the sediment transport analysis. The larger estuaries in the test cell areas were also studied for flushing characteristics.

California coast nearshore processes study

The author has identified the following significant results. Remote sensor aircraft flights took place simultaneously with ERTS-1 overpasses at the San Francisco, Monterey Bay, and Santa Barbara test cells. The cameras and scanners used were configured for detecting suspended sediment and for maximum water penetration. The Ektachrome/Wratten 12 photographs which were intentionally overexposed 1-1/2 stops were found to show the most extensive sediment transport detail. Minus blue/K 2 photographs illustrate nearshore underwater bottom detail including the head of the Mugu submarine canyon. The EMSIDE 9 channel scanner was employed to classify and differentiate suspended sediment, oil, kelp, and other materials found in the nearshore area. Processing of bulk ERTS-1 computer compatible tapes was utilized to enhance and analyze nearshore sediments. This technique was most successful in enhancing subtle nearshore features found to be faint or invisible on prints made from the supplied negatives. In addition to this continuing computer process, an effort was initiated to interface density values from the bulk tapes into contouring and mapping software.

California coast nearshore processes study

The author has identified the following significant results. During the period 1 May to 30 June 1973 material was processed and interpreted for use in analyzing the three ocean seasons along the California coast. ERTS imagery from the first season of the year, called the Davidson Current period, was mosaiced and analyzed. The second season of the year, the Upwelling period, was mosaiced and interpretation was initiated. Imagery for the third ocean season, the Oceanic period, is being collected for future study.

California coast nearshore processes study

The author has identified the following significant results. Large scale sediment plumes from intermittent streams and rivers form detectable seasonal patterns on ERTS-1 imagery. The ocean current systems, as plotted from three California coast ERTS mosaics, were identified. Offshore patterns of sediment in areas such as the Santa Barbara Channel are traceable. These patterns extend offshore to heretofore unanticipated ranges as shown on the ERTS-1 imagery. Flying spot scanner enhancements of NASA tapes resulted in details of subtle and often invisible (to the eye) nearshore features. The suspended sediments off San Francisco and in Monterey Bay are emphasized in detail. These are areas of extremely changeable offshore sediment transport patterns. Computer generated contouring of radiance levels resulted in maps that can be used in determining surface and nearsurface suspended sediment distribution. Tentative calibrations of ERTS-1 spectral brightness against sediment load have been made using shipboard measurements. Information from the combined enhancement and interpretation techniques is applicable to operational coastal engineering programs.

California coastal processes study

Preliminary findings are presented and applications derived from ERTS-1 satellite imagery of the nearshore coastal processes of the California coast. The objectives were to analyze nearshore currents, sediment transport, and estuarine and river discharges along the California coast through the use of synoptic and repetitive imagery from ERTS as well as aircraft underflights and surface data. The major conclusions are: (1) Distinct seasonal patterns for sediment transport as a function of the oceanic current systems and coastal morphology have been identified. (2) Large scale sediment plumes from intermittent streams and rivers extend offshore to previously unanticipated ranges. (3) Computer generated contouring of radiance levels from computer-compatible tapes result in charts that can be used for determination of surface and nearsurface suspended sediment distribution. (4) Flying spot scanner enhancements result in details of nearshore features. (5) Data is providing significant information for coastal planning and construction projects.
