Optical Data Storage Capabilities of Bacteriorhodopsin

We present several measurements of the data storage capability of bacteriorhodopsin films to help establish the baseline performance of this material as a medium for holographic data storage. In particular, we examine the decrease in diffraction efficiency with the density of holograms stored at one location in the film, and we also analyze the recording schedule needed to produce a set of equal intensity holograms at a single location in the film. Using this information along with the assumptions about the performance of the optical system, we can estimate potential data storage densities in bacteriorhodopsin.

Applications of mutant yeast strains with low glycogen storage capability

Several strains of Hansenula polymorpha were selected for possible low glycogen storage characteristics based on a selective I2 staining procedure. The levels of storage carbohydrates in the mutant strains were found to be 44-70% of the levels in the parent strain for cultures harvested in stationary phase. Similar differences generally were not found for cells harvested in exponential phase. Yeast strains deficient in glycogen storage capability are valuable in increasing the relative protein value of microbial biomass and also may provide significant cost savings in substrate utilization in fermentative processes.

Virtual storage capability of residential buildings for sustainable smart city via model-based predictive control

This paper evaluates the virtual storage capability of a residential air-conditioning (AC) system by utilizing the building mass as a thermal storage to enable sustainable cities through model-based predictive control (MPC). The control-oriented building model was developed with a grey-box model structure based on the experimental data to predict the indoor air temperature. Based on the model, the operation cost-saving potential of the MPC was investigated in a single house with different comfort levels, electricity prices, and prediction horizons. The cost-saving of the MPC was approximately 10.6 % compared to the conventional control. The MPC was expanded to a residential building cluster considering the peak demand charge. In an hourly shedding and load-up scenario, the performances of the MPC and the heuristic prior-based control (PBC) are promising. When shedding was enforced all day, the peak demand saving of the MPC was 36~38 %, whereas that of the PBC was 25.7 % compared to the baseline. In addition, the monthly electricity bill, including the operation and peak demand cost, was investigated with different demand charge rates and weather conditions. The total saving decreased with a low demand charge rate and hot conditions, and the operation cost saving was compromised with more aggressive demand shedding.

Multifunctional Heat Pump with Energy Storage Capability

Replacing gas furnaces with heat pumps on a large scale can pose challenges to the electrical grid. It will significantly increase the demand, strain the electrical grid, especially during peak usage times. To ensure that heat pumps contribute to reducing emissions, it's essential to increase the share of renewable energy in the grid. However, the supply of renewable energy is unstable. Large scale of electrification must address the concern of grid resilience to meet necessary heating/cooling demands and shift peak electric load. All these require future heat pumps having energy storage capability. These systems can store excess energy during low-demand periods and release it during high-demand periods, reducing stress on the grid. This paper will introduce an innovative configuration, control, and laboratory investigations of a multifunctional packaged heat pump. In addition to the original indoor and outdoor air coils, the heat pump has a parallel hydronic loop with a brazed plate heat exchanger (BHP). The hydronic loop circulates hot/chilled water to store heating/cooling energy in phase change material (PCM). It is capable of space cooling, space heating, cooling energy storage/defrosting, water heating/heating energy storage with outdoor air source or indoor air source, and cooling/heating energy free discharge. The laboratory studies and breadboard unit are presented. Additionally, building energy simulation demonstrates utility cost reduction potential via charging PCM panels/ceilings during off-peak hours and releasing the energy during peak hours to mitigate the peak power consumption.

Revolutionizing Lithium Storage Capabilities in TiO 2 by Expanding the Redox Range

TiO 2 is a widely recognized intercalation anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), yet its practical capacity is kinetically constrained due to sluggish lithium-ion diffusion, leading to a lithiation number of less than 1.0 Li + (336 mAh g -1 ). Here, the growth of TiO 2 crystallites is restrained by integrating Si into the TiO 2 framework, thereby enhancing the charge transfer and creating additional active sites potentially residing at grain boundaries for Li + storage. This strategy is corroborated by the expanded redox range of Ti, as thoroughly demonstrated via synchrotron radiation-based X-ray spectroscopy and Cs-corrected electron microscopy. Consequently, when deployed for lithium storage, the tailored material achieves an extraordinarily high reversible capacity of 559 mAh g -1 , 116% of the theoretical maximum of 483 mAh g -1 calculated based on all active species, while simultaneously retaining superior rate capability and robust cycling stability. Further, this work offers fresh perspectives on the revitalization of traditional electrode materials to achieve enhanced capacities.

Multisource Mobile Transfer Learning Algorithm Based on Dynamic Model Compression

With the development of the Internet of Things, the application of computer vision on mobile phones is becoming more and more extensive and people have higher and higher requirements for the timeliness of the recognition results returned and the processing capabilities of the mobile phone for image recognition. However, the processing capability and storage capability of the user terminal equipment cannot meet the needs of identifying and storing a large number of pictures, and the data transmission process will cause high energy consumption of the terminal equipment. At the same time, multisource deep transfer learning has outstanding performance in computer vision and image classification. However, due to the huge amount of calculation of the deep network model, it is impossible to use the existing excellent network model to realize image recognition and classification on the mobile terminal. In order to solve the abovementioned problems, we propose a multisource mobile transfer learning algorithm based on dynamic model compression, this algorithm considers the realization of multisource transfer learning computing in the case of multiple mobile device computing source domains, and the method also guarantees data privacy and security for each device (origin domain). Meanwhile, extensive experiments show that our method can achieve remarkable results in popular image classification datasets.

Push-pull switching power amplifier

A true push-pull switching power amplifier is disclosed utilizing two dc-to-dc converters. Each converter is comprised of two inductances, one inductance in series with a DC source and the other inductor in series with the output load, and an electrical energy transferring device with storage capability, namely storage capacitance, with suitable switching means between the inductances to obtain DC level conversion, where the switching means allows bidirectional current (and power) flow, and the switching means of one dc-to-dc converter is driven by the complement of a square-wave switching signal for the other dc-to-dc converter for true push-pull operation. For reduction of current ripple, the inductances in each of the two converters may be coupled, and with proper design of the coupling, the ripple can be reduced to zero at either the input or the output, but preferably the output.

Development of media for dynamic latent heat storage for the low-temperature range. Part 1: Thermal analyses of selected salt hydrate systems

Phase change temperatures and phase change enthalpies of seventeen salt hydrates, three double salts, and four eutectics were measured thermodynamically and the results reported herein. Good results were obtained, especially for congruently melting salt hydrates. Incongruently melting salt hydrates appear less suitable for heat storage applications. The influence of the second phase - water, acid and hydroxide - to the latent heat is described. From these results, basic values of the working temperatures and storage capabilities of various storage media compositions may be derived.

High rate science data handling on Space Station Freedom

A study by NASA's User Information System Working Group for Space Station Freedom (SSF) has determined that the proposed onboard Data Management System, as initially configured, will be incapable of handling the data-generation rates typical of numerous scientific sensor payloads; many of these generate data at rates in excess of 10 Mbps, and there are at least four cases of rates in excess of 300 Mbps. The SSF Working Group has accordingly suggested an alternative conceptual architecture based on technology expected to achieve space-qualified status by 1995. The architecture encompasses recorders with rapid data-ingest capabilities and massive storage capabilities, optical delay lines allowing the recording of only the phenomena of interest, and data flow-compressing image processors.

Development of photomultiplier electronics and computer interfacing software for a high speed photoelectric photometer-Stoke's meter

Preliminary stages in the design, construction, and development of a photoelectric photometer system interfaced with an IMSAI 8080 microcomputer. The instrument will also include magnetic tape and magnetic disk storage capabilities to enable rapid data storage. The capability of the instrument to make observations with very high time resolution, as high as 10 msec, and measure the intensity and polarization of radiation emitted by objects which show very rapid light variations, pulsars and optical counterparts of X-ray sources was of concern. A better understanding of the magnetic fields and interstellar material which characterize the immediate environment of these stellar systems and an expansion of the observational capabilities of even modest-sized telescopes are expected.

Enhancing Charge Storage of Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 MXene by Partial Oxidation

Abstract Driving the pseudocapacitive redox intercalation in 2DMXenes with neutral electrolytes is important for safer, more sustainable, and improved electrochemical charge storage. Single transition metal MXenes, such as Ti 3 C 2 , have shown great promise for energy storage, owing to their high conductivity and redox activity. Mixed metallic MXenes, such as out‐of‐plane ordered Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 , have remained underexplored in energy storage because of the absence of redox activity in most of the electrolytes. Simultaneous structural modifications and instigating intercalation pseudocapacitance in neutral electrolytes could be a viable strategy for enhancing their electrochemical properties. Herein, a facile synthesis of partially oxidized Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 MXene (PO‐Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 ) exhibiting improved charge storage capability is demonstrated. Optical, structural, and spectroscopic analyses indicate the formation of oxide nanostructures upon thermal oxidation of Mo 2 Ti 2 C 3 . This leads to an enhanced energy storage capability with remarkably improved cyclability as well as a high Coulombic efficiency in a neutral LiCl electrolyte. This work highlights the importance of structural modifications of MXenes to enhance their charge storage and shows the promise of less explored double transition metal MXenes in energy storage.

2-Aminoanthracene Crystallization in Its Compatible Polystyrene Block: RAFT Synthesis and Enhanced Charge Retention in Pentacene Transistor Gate Dielectrics

We synthesized polystyrene-block-polyanthrylaminomethylstyrene (PS-b-PAAS) via RAFT reaction and side chain modification where the PAAS block is 50%. By blending 2-aminoanthracene (2AA) with PS-b-PAAS, the co-aggregation behavior of the PAAS block and 2AA within the thin film was observed by optical microscopy (OM) and x-ray diffraction. At 5 and 10 wt% of 2AA within the thin film, OM results showed a clear morphological difference between PS matrix and PS-b-PAAS matrix. Differences in the 2AA excited state lifetime in these matrices were also established using transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS). Blends were used as gate dielectrics in pentacene transistors. We compared characteristic voltage (Vc, an indicator of threshold voltage) before and after charging of PS-b-PAAS blended with unsubstituted PS and both polymers individually blended with 2AA. For blended PS-b-PAAS and PS, as the concentration of PS-b-PAAS increases, the decreased Vc especially with negative charging of the pentacene indicated a larger concentration of charge carriers induced by the dielectric film. The charging experiments also revealed that the unique structure formed by the 2AA/PS-b-PAAS blend significantly affected the charge storage capability of the organic field-effect transistors (OFET). Furthermore, this work demonstrates the novel co-aggregation structure in the dielectrics, and furthermore its impact on charge storage capability in pentacene OFETs.
