CO 2 Storage Site Screening Platform Development and CO 2 Storage Resource Analysis in SECARB Offshore Reservoirs Using SAS Viya

A major goal of the SECARB Offshore Partnership (DE-FE0031557) is to screen deep saline aquifers and hydrocarbon reservoirs in the central Gulf of Mexico for CO 2 sequestration and CO 2 -enhanced oil and gas recovery (EOR/EGR) and estimate the corresponding CO 2 storage resources for select reservoirs. CO 2 storage potential associated with offshore CO 2 -EOR is considerable and likely represents “low hanging fruit” for near-term CO 2 storage given the in-place infrastructure in the region. It is for these reasons that this assessment focuses on oil and gas fields. To this end, three major objectives have been completed and include (1) managing geological data derived from different sources, (2) building a reservoir screening platform for CO 2 storage, and (3) ranking the reservoirs based on the estimated CO 2 storage resources. The SAS ® Viya platform was used for data management and analytics. The Viya platform is a cloud service platform that provides data integration, data management, quick analytics, data visualization, machine learning functions, and application programming interfaces (APIs) for multi-programming languages. Different sources of data containing geologic information, reservoir properties, and EOR/EGR information were collected, cleaned, formatted, and loaded into the SAS ® Viya platform for evaluation. The major geological characteristics of both shelf and deep-water areas of the central Gulf were examined and compared to define the appropriate reservoir screening criteria. Next, a CO 2 storage site screening system was built in the SAS ® Viya platform with the pre-defined criteria. Finally, the CO 2 storage resources of the screened reservoirs were calculated and reported at the BOEM field level to identify fields with the highest estimated CO 2 storage resource. The fields with the largest total estimated CO 2 storage resource are located in the Mississippi Canyon protraction area. Due to proximity to the Mississippi Delta (indicative of less infrastructure) and large estimated CO 2 storage resources, future development activities may wish to focus efforts in the Mississippi Canyon protraction area.

Ordovician-Cambrian Units: Hierarchical Evaluation of Geologic Carbon Storage Resource Estimates

The Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS) led subtask 1.1 to assess the regional distribution and estimate the storage capacity of Ordovician-Cambrian stratigraphic units located within the partnership region. A comprehensive data set of wireline logs and petrophysical information was used to generate these interpretations. These data include core analysis for porosity and permeability, mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP), and existing well data including location and stratigraphic information. This report includes storage resource estimates (SREs) for three potential storage reservoirs(limestone and dolostone from the Upper Ordovician Trenton Limestone/Black River Group and equivalent units, the Middle Ordovician St. Peter Sandstone, and primary target reservoir rocks of the Lower Ordovician and Upper Cambrian Knox Supergroup and equivalent units) calculated using six methodologies: (1) a fixed value of porosity of 10 percent in all units evaluated; (2) a unique average porosity (per well) from wireline-derived porosity (neutron, sonic, and/or density porosity for each unit); (3) porosity values from core analysis; (4) a depth-dependent porosity model (Knox Supergroup only); (5) porosity based on a model based on petrophysical facies; and (6) SREs using National Energy Technology Laboratory’s CO2 Storage prospeCtive Resource Estimation Excel aNalysis (CO2-SCREEN beta V2). All methods used the same values for thickness for each unit. However, the areal extent of each assessment was limited by the data available for each method. Estimated volumes were calculated in 1-by-1 kilometer grid cells and summarized as county and total stratigraphic unit volumes. The resultant SREs mass are displayed using boxplots, which allow for comparing data statistics (mean values and variability) between methods. Differences observed in SRE results from the six methods are mainly attributable to differences in the data and conceptual models used to interpret or estimate porosity in each method. Based on this systematic variability between methods, it is inferred that methods 1, 4, and 6 are best used for regional-scale reconnaissance estimates of storage capacity while methods 2, 3, and 5 are more appropriate for local scales where more data is required. All estimates are data-density dependent and different methods require different amounts of data for reasonable assessments. ArcMap 10.5.1 software was used to portray SREs to help visualize spatial variance of estimates for each methodology, and more importantly, to highlight those areas having the greatest total storage potential estimates.

Screening Assessment of Prospective CO 2 Storage Resource Potential in Saline Carbonate Systems, Central North Dakota Region

Conference presentation at 2023 Rocky Mountain Section-American Association of Petroleum Geologists (RMS-AAPG) Annual Meeting, Bismarck, ND, June 4–6, 2023. As part of the U.S. Department of Energy-funded North Dakota CarbonSAFE Phase III effort, a screening-level assessment was conducted over central North Dakota, including McLean, Mercer, and Morton Counties, to determine if viable CO 2 storage resource potential exists within carbonate saline reservoirs. Published literature and data from 173 wells were used in the study. The study focused on identifying carbonate saline reservoirs and suitable confining zones for CO 2 storage, with emphasis on three key questions: 1) are the carbonate saline reservoirs viable for CO 2 storage? 2) what is their range of storage resource potential? and 3) what are the main elements driving uncertainty and risk of potential capacity and containment?

Spatial Seal Database for Prospective Storage Resources in the USA

The goal of the Spatial Seal Database for Prospective Storage Resources in the USA is to provide relevant information and spatial extents of caprock and seal rocks. A lack of aggregated information is readily available that focuses on the caprock and seal units within sedimentary basins. The EPA class VI permit requires an assessment of the confining zone as part of submitting a permit. The data catalog of seal unit names and relevant properties with the seal spatial extent database aims to help provided important data for carbon storage based assessments. The data catalog and database are designed to show what seal data is available in a sedimentary basin and guide stakeholders to the original data source for those datasets.

Underground hydrogen storage resource assessment for the Cook Inlet, Alaska

Underground hydrogen storage will be essential to a hydrogen economy. This work focuses on the challenge of identifying and screening candidate storage systems, given the unique behavior of hydrogen in the subsurface. Here, we describe a resource assessment methodology and apply it to Alaska’s Cook Inlet region. Alaska provides an interesting case study because of its abundant renewable energy resources, relatively low energy demand, and isolated electrical grid. The assessment framework considers each site’s ability to (1) store a specific volume, (2) physically-contain the stored gas, and (3) limit biogeochemical activity. We estimate that reservoirs in the Cook Inlet area could theoretically store a total of 286 TWh (or 8.6 million tonnes [Mt]) in hydrogen working gas in 92 pools. This is likely sufficient to meet both local hydrogen demand and support an array of exportable products. We further identify seven pools that may be especially well-suited for hydrogen storage. Broadly, this work demonstrates a framework for regional resource assessments. On a finer scale, this work supports an early demonstration of porous–media hydrogen storage in the United States.

Characterization of Offshore Storage Resource Potential in the Central Planning Area of the Gulf of Mexico

This report contains a brief overview of the several studies that provide the basis for this work and details the reservoir characterization efforts that have been completed to date. Briefly, geological characterization data suggests that the deep-water reservoirs are the result of the interplay between turbidite depositional systems and salt tectonics. Project Partners have estimated the CO 2 storage capacity associated with saline reservoirs and that associated with CO 2 -Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in the state waters of Louisiana. In addition, Project Partners have conducted a detailed analysis of CO 2 storage potential associated with CO 2 -EOR in the central planning area of the GOM. This work estimates that 3,140 million metric tonnes of CO 2 can be stored in optimal reservoirs of the shallow- and deep-water central GOM. A reduced order modeling and machine learning approach is introduced that will be used to evaluate CO 2 storage capacity and plume dynamics for down-selected, reservoir-specific, saline characterization. Last, a brief discussion establishes how the data presented in this report will support future work.

Optimization Formulations for Storage Devices with Disjoint Operating Modes

Optimizing State of Charge for Storage Resources Storage of generated energy has existed as a contributing resource within the power sector for more than a century in the case of pumped hydro storage. Even though most regional transmission organizations/independent system operators do not currently optimize state of charge (SOC) for storage, the SOC is an essential aspect of the operating characteristics of storage. This paper investigates the impact on computational performance of optimizing storage with explicit representation of SOC. To investigate the model, the paper considers two contexts, stand-alone and large-scale. Analysis of the stand-alone context helps to explain why the combination of features in the storage model results in a difficult problem. Numerical results for large-scale test cases verify that new tighter valid inequalities can improve the computation compared with the standard model in the literature.
