Fabricating Sub-Collimating Grids for an X-Ray Solar Imaging Spectrometer Using LIGA Techniques

A proposed NASA mission uses a High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (HESSI) to image solar X-rays. The HESSI instrument consists of twelve rotating pairs of high aspect ratio, high Z grids, each pair of which is separated by 1.7 meters and backed by a single Ge detector. Discussed are the fabrication of these proof-of-concept sub-collimating X-ray grids which are to be used in HESSI.

Fabricating Sub-collimating Grids for an X-ray Solar Imaging Spectrometer using LIGA Techniques

This paper describes fabrication of sub-collimating X-ray grids that are used in an instrument for the High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager ( HESSI ), a proposed NASA mission that will promote understanding of solar particle acceleration and explosive energy release in the magnetized plasmas at the Sun. The HESSI comprises 12 rotating pairs of high-aspect-ratio, high-Z grids; each pair is separated by 1.7 meters and backed by a single Ge detector.

Solar Flare Physics

During the past year we have been working with the HESSI (High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager) team in preparation for launch in early 2001. HESSI has as its primary scientific goal photometric imaging and spectroscopy of solar flares in hard X-rays and gamma-rays with an approx. 2 sec angular resolution, approx. keV energy resolution and approx. 2 s time resolution over the 6 keV to 15 MeV energy range. We have performed tests of the imager using a specially designed experiment which exploits the second-harmonic response of HESSI's sub-collimators to an artificial X-ray source at a distance of 1550 cm from its front grids. Figures show the response to X-rays at energies in the range where HESSI is expected to image solar flares. To prepare the team and the solar user community for imaging flares with HESSI, we have written a description of the major imaging concepts. This paper will be submitted for publication in a referred journal.

Fine Pitch Grids for an X-Ray Solar Imaging Spectrometer Fabricated by Optical Lithography and XeF2 Etching

Fine-pitch, sub-collimating X-ray grids have been developed for an instrument in the High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager , a proposed NASA mission. In addition to high-energy x- rays, the instrument requires collimation of photons with energies of less than 4 keV such that free-standing grids are required that have no material between the grid slats. Fabrication of these grids is described.
