TOGA COARE Satellite data summaries available on the World Wide Web

Satellite data summary images and analysis plots from the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA COARE), which were initially prepared in the field at the Honiara Operations Center, are now available on the Internet via World Wide Web browsers such as Mosaic. These satellite data summaries consist of products derived from the Japanese Geosynchronous Meteorological Satellite IR data: a time-size series of the distribution of contiguous cold cloudiness areas, weekly percent high cloudiness (PHC) maps, and a five-month time-longitudinal diagram illustrating the zonal motion of large areas of cold cloudiness. The weekly PHC maps are overlaid with weekly mean 850-hPa wind calculated from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) global analysis field and can be viewed as an animation loop. These satellite summaries provide an overview of spatial and temporal variabilities of the cloud population and a large-scale context for studies concerning specific processes of various components of TOGA COARE.

An experimental investigation of shock wave-turbulent boundary layer interactions with and without boundary layer suction: A data summary report

Tabulated data from a series of experimental studies of the interaction of a shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer in axisymmetric flow configurations is presented. The studies were conducted at the walls of circular wind tunnels and on the cylindrical centerbody of an annular flow channel. Detailed pitot pressure profiles and wall static pressure profiles upstream of, within and downstream of the interaction region are given. Results are presented for flows at nominal freestream Mach Numbers of 2, 3 and 4. For studies at the tunnel sidewalls, the shock waves were produced by conical shock generators mounted on the centerline of the wind tunnel at zero angle of attack. The annular ring generator was used to produce the shock wave at the centerbody of the annular flow channel. The effects of boundary layer bleed were examined in the investigation. Both bleed rate and bleed location were studied. Most of the bleed studies were conducted with bleed holes drilled normal to the wall surface but the effects of slot suction were also examined. A summary of the principal results and conclusions is given.

Summary data on all NASA procurement actions

This report presents summary data on all NASA procurement actions and detailed information on contracts, grants, agreements, and other procurements over $25,000 awarded by NASA during Fiscal Year 1992 (FY-92). The dollar value on procurements over $25,000 amounted to 97 percent of the total dollar value of procurement actions completed during FY-92. However, these larger procurements accounted for only 28 percent of the total actions. Procurement action, as used in this report, means contractual actions to obtain supplies, services, or construction which increase or decrease funds. A procurement action thus may be a new procurement or modifications such as supplemental agreements, change orders, or terminations to an existing contract that change the total amount of funds obligated. An obligation is a contractual commitment to pay for supplies or services that are specified in the contract.

Introduction and data summary, chapter 5

A subset of data representing most of the participating model groups was discussed and reviewed. The results are presented for intercomparisons of that subset of data. Subsequent to the workshop, the various modeling groups had the opportunity to either update or add to the data sets discussed at the workshop. The overall revised data sets as of December 1988 are presented. Data from all the models (where available) are grouped according to: (1) photochemistry and radiation (photodissociation coefficients, and ultraviolet heating and infrared cooling); (2) transport (net radiative heating, tropospheric source tracer experiment, time-dependent source conserved tracer experiment, stratospheric source tracer experiment, and O3 column); (3) current atmosphere (integrated columns of trace gases, Cl(y) and NO(y), nitrogen gases, chlorine gases, O(x) and HO(x) gases, and source gases); and (4) perturbed circulations and temperatures. The data presented provide a detailed summary of the two-dimensional picture of the atmosphere as seen by current atmospheric models.

F-106 data summary and model results relative to threat criteria and protection design analysis

The NASA F-106 has acquired considerable data on the rates-of-change of electromagnetic parameters on the aircraft surface during 690 direct lightning strikes while penetrating thunderstorms at altitudes ranging from 15,000 to 40,000 feet. These in-situ measurements have provided the basis for the first statistical quantification of the lightning electromagnetic threat to aircrat appropriate for determining lightning indirect effects on aircraft. The data are presently being used in updating previous lightning criteria and standards developed over the years from ground-based measurements. The new lightning standards will, therefore, be the first which reflect actual aircraft responses measured at flight altitudes. The modeling technique developed to interpret and understand the direct strike electromagnetic data acquired on the F-106 provides a means to model the interaction of the lightning channel with the F-106. The reasonable results obtained with the model, compared to measured responses, yield confidence that the model may be credibly applied to other aircraft types and uses in the prediction of internal coupling effects in the design of lightning protection for new aircraft.

Uncertainty Management in Remote Sensing of Climate Data. Summary of A Workshop

Great advances have been made in our understanding of the climate system over the past few decades, and remotely sensed data have played a key role in supporting many of these advances. Improvements in satellites and in computational and data-handling techniques have yielded high quality, readily accessible data. However, rapid increases in data volume have also led to large and complex datasets that pose significant challenges in data analysis (NRC, 2007). Uncertainty characterization is needed for every satellite mission and scientists continue to be challenged by the need to reduce the uncertainty in remotely sensed climate records and projections. The approaches currently used to quantify the uncertainty in remotely sensed data, including statistical methods used to calibrate and validate satellite instruments, lack an overall mathematically based framework.

Blended SST fields combined SMMR/ship data (summary of technique)

All remote sensors have bias problems which vary in space and time. The infrared measurements are very sparse in cloudy areas: the SMMR has coverage limitations due to the interference of land areas and only half time operation. If one simply averaged the data from these various sources, the combination of the biases and varying sampling would introduce artifacts into the analyzed product which would reflect the sampling and which could be quite misleading. The remote sensors provide reasonable estimates of gradients of SST over length scales greater than the sensor resolution but smaller than hemispheric. Ships can be considered unbiased but are poorly distributed on small scales except in the densest shipping lanes. An analysis scheme based on a suggestion by Holl was developed which exploits just this approximately complementarity to provide an improved SST analysis. The resulting accuracy appears to be in the required approx. 0.5 C range for the particular case of using SMMR and ship data to produce two degree latitude by two degrees longitude monthly analyses.
