Large-Scale Plasmonic Hybrid Framework with Built-In Nanohole Array as Multifunctional Optical Sensing Platforms

Light coupling with patterned subwavelength hole arrays induces enhanced transmission supported by the strong surface plasmon mode. In this work, a nanostructured plasmonic framework with vertically built-in nanohole arrays at deep-subwavelength scale (6 nm) is demonstrated using a two-step fabrication method. The nanohole arrays are formed first by the growth of a high-quality two-phase (i.e., Au–TiN) vertically aligned nanocomposite template, followed by selective wet-etching of the metal (Au). Such a plasmonic nanohole film owns high epitaxial quality with large surface coverage and the structure can be tailored as either fully etched or half-way etched nanoholes via careful control of the etching process. The chemically inert and plasmonic TiN plays a role in maintaining sharp hole boundary and preventing lattice distortion. Optical properties such as enhanced transmittance and anisotropic dielectric function in the visible regime are demonstrated. Numerical simulation suggests an extended surface plasmon mode and strong field enhancement at the hole edges. Furthermore, two demonstrations, including the enhanced and modulated photoluminescence by surface coupling with 2D perovskite nanoplates and the refractive index sensing by infiltrating immersion liquids, suggest the great potential of such plasmonic nanohole array for reusable surface plasmon-enhanced sensing applications.

Phase-resolved terahertz nanoimaging of W Te 2 microcrystals

The terahertz (THz) electrodynamics of few-layer W⁢Te 2 is dominated by the plasmon response. However, THz surface plasmons (SPs) with long wavelengths in two-dimensional exfoliated crystals are typically confined by the lateral geometry. Direct visualization of the plasmonic standing wave patterns is challenging due to the spatial confinement and low quality factor of the SP, especially for samples that are only a few monolayers thick. Here, we resolve subtle real-space features of the plasmonic response of W⁢Te 2 by augmenting more common scattering amplitude experiments with the phase contrast accomplished within the time-domain version of THz nanoimaging. Amplitude and phase images allow us to quantitatively evaluate the evolution of the plasmonic response at cryogenic temperatures in samples with variable thickness from 3 to 12 monolayers. Further, the proposed imaging modality is universally applicable to the THz near-field nanoscopy of low-dimensional materials.

Site-specific regulatory interaction between spinach leaf sucrose-phosphate synthase and 14-3-3 proteins

We report an Mg2+-dependent interaction between spinach leaf sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS) and endogenous 14-3-3 proteins, as evidenced by co-elution during gel filtration and co-immunoprecipitation. The content of 14-3-3s associated with an SPS immunoprecipitate was inversely related to activity, and was specifically reduced when tissue was pretreated with 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide riboside, suggesting metabolite control in vivo. A synthetic phosphopeptide based on Ser-229 was shown by surface plasmon resonance to bind a recombinant plant 14-3-3, and addition of the phosphorylated SPS-229 peptide was found to stimulate the SPS activity of an SPS:14-3-3 complex. Taken together, the results suggest a regulatory interaction of 14-3-3 proteins with Ser-229 of SPS.

Ultrafast pulse pumping of topological nanospaser

Here, we theoretically examine a topological nanospaser that is optically pumped using an ultra-fast circularly-polarized pulse. The spasing system consists of a silver nanospheroid, which supports surface plasmon (SP) excitations, and a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayer nanoflake. The silver nanospheroid screens the incoming pulse and creates a non-uniform spatial distribution of electron excitations in the TMDC nanoflake. These excitations decay into the localized SPs, which can be of two types with the corresponding magnetic quantum number ±1. The amount and the type of the generated SPs depend on the intensity of the optical pulse. For small pulse amplitude, only one plasmonic mode is predominantly generated, resulting in far-field elliptically polarized radiation. For large amplitude of the optical pulse, both plasmonic modes are generated in almost the same amount, resulting in linearly polarized far-field radiation.

Degenerate parametric down-conversion facilitated by exciton-plasmon polariton states in a nonlinear plasmonic cavity

Abstract We study the effect of degenerate parametric down-conversion (DPDC) in an ensemble of two-level quantum emitters (QEs) coupled via near-field interactions to a single surface plasmon (SP) mode of a nonlinear plasmonic cavity. For this purpose, we develop a quantum driven-dissipative model capturing non-equilibrium dynamics of the system in which incoherently pumped QEs have transition frequency tuned near the second-harmonic response of the SPs. Considering the strong coupling regime, i.e. the SP-QE interaction rate exceeds system dissipation rates, we find a critical SP-QE coupling attributed to the phase transition between normal and lasing steady states. Examining fluctuations above the system’s steady states, we predict new elementary excitations, namely, the exciton-plasmon polaritons formed by the two-SP quanta and single-exciton states of QEs. The contribution of two-SP quanta results in the linear scaling of the SP-QE interaction rate with the number of QEs,  o , as opposed to the  o -scaling known for the Dicke and Tavis–Cummings models. We further examine how SP-QE interaction scaling affects the polariton dispersions and power spectra in the vicinity of the critical coupling. For this purpose, we compare the calculation results assuming a finite ensemble of QEs and the model thermodynamic limit. The calculated power spectra predict an interplay of coherent photon emission by QEs near the second-harmonic frequency and correlated photon-pair emission at the fundamental frequency by the SPs (i.e. the photonic DPDC effect).
