Synergistic Co-Ir/Ru Composite Electrocatalysts Impart Efficient and Durable Oxygen Evolution Catalysis in Acid

Exploring highly active and robust catalysts, which have low precious metal content, to boost the kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key concern for hydrogen production via proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). Here, in this work, rational engineering of the morphology and the local geometric ligand environment of Ir and Ru catalysts are presented by using defect-rich, lanthanum- and lithium-doped Co 3 O 4 nanofiber (LLCF) as substrate that promotes the electrocatalytic OER. Two catalysts, IrCoOx@LLCF and RuCoOx@LLCF, achieve mass activities of 1013.5 A g Ir –1 and 1911.4 A g Ru –1 in 0.1 M HClO 4 at 300 mV overpotential, respectively, which are 26 and 50 times higher than that of commercial IrO 2 and RuO 2 . Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy unveils the reversible structure of IrCoOx during the OER and the suppression of over-oxidation of Co and Ir, giving rise to high stability. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the local geometric ligand engineering optimizes the binding of oxygenated species to the active sites, resulting in strongly enhanced catalytic activity.

Intermediate Sr 2 Co 1.5 Fe 0.5 O 6-δ Tetragonal Structure between Perovskite and Brownmillerite as a Model Catalyst with Layered Oxygen Deficiency for Enhanced Electrochemical Water Oxidation

The generation of hydrogen in an environmentally benign way is highly essential to meet future energy demands. However, in the process of splitting water electrochemically, sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) curtails its applicability, as it drags energy input. Herein, we synthesized SrCo-Fe-O oxides to optimize their OER activity by varying the Co/Fe ratio. Among them, Sr 2 Co 1.5 Fe 0.5 O 6-δ exhibited the best OER catalytic activity in the series, with an overpotential of 318 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and Tafel slope of 44.8 mV dec -1 . High-resolution neutron powder diffraction analysis identified an intermediate structure between the perovskite and brownmillerite, with alternating layers of disorderly orientated oxygen-deficient tetrahedra and fully stoichiometric octahedra. The unique stacking of tetrahedral and octahedral units facilitates desired interactions between the electrode surface and electrolyte. Theoretical calculations revealed that increased covalency of Co 3d and O 2p in Sr 2 Co 1.5 Fe 0.5 O 6-δ oxide is another primary contributor to its augmented water oxidation ability. As a model for developing catalysts with such an intermediate structure, the synergetic effect of oxygen vacancy and hybridization between Co 3d and O 2p assured the Sr 2 Co 1.5 Fe 0.5 O 6-δ oxide as a better catalyst for its enhanced OER activity.

Optimization of Oxygen Electrode Combined with Soluble Catalyst to Enhance the Performance of Lithium-Oxygen Battery

Lithium-air batteries possess a high theoretical energy density among the current battery technologies, and are expected to become the driving power for electric vehicles. However, the practical application of lithium air batteries is handicapped by their poor cycle life, high over-charge potential and low energy efficiency. Numerous studies have performed to improve the kinetics of the electrochemical reaction. Making a good oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst system is under intense scrutiny. In this work, we report a rational design of air electrode, which derives from biomass and presents a three-dimensional porous carbon architecture with high specific surface and large volume expansion coefficient. Combining with a soluble catalyst, this oxygen electrode presents an ultrahigh areal specific capacity of 7.95 mAh/cm 2 and a long cycling life up to 1000 cycles with suppressed polarization (about 0.46 V). Finally, the greatly improved overall performance is due to the synergetic effect of the novel designed oxygen electrode capable of mediating the redox mediators to trigger the ORR and OER process.
