The role of ternary alloying elements in eutectoid transformation of U-10Mo alloy part II. In and Ex-situ Neutron diffraction-based assessment of eutectoid phase transformation kinetics in U-9.8Mo-0.2X alloy (X = Cr, Ni or Co)

HExploring the effects of minor ternary alloying additions, typically impurity elements, on the phase stability of U-10Mo is important for preventing undesirable phase decomposition during processing or during service. This work examines the influence small ternary additions of Cr, Ni, and Co. Both in-situ and ex-situ neutron diffraction measurements made during and after high temperature (450 – 525°C) exposures were used to better define the influence of these elements on the time-temperature-transformation (TTT) behavior of U-10Mo, providing information which is complementary to electron microscopy investigations of the same alloy systems performed in the first part of this work. Minor additions of Ni and Co decrease the ?-phase stability at all temperatures investigated. Signatures of U6X (X = Ni or Co) compounds were shown to be present in amounts of up to 6 wt% in the heat treated alloys, suggesting that the initial precipitation of this phase may catalyze further ?-phase decomposition. On the other hand, the Cr containing alloys were observed to have nearly the same, and in some cases slower, phase transformation kinetics when compared to the binary U-10Mo control samples. The results of the study have enabled preliminary estimates of the TTT curves for the ternary alloys.

Self-Assembly of Partially Charged Diblock Copolymer-Homopolymer Ternary Blends

Ternary blends comprising of a diblock copolymer and the corresponding homopolymers provide ready access to a variety of morphologies, but the impact of charge on their phase behavior has not been studied extensively. Here, three partially charged ternary blends consisting of symmetric poly[(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) propyl sodium sulfonate methacrylate)] (POEGMA#), polystyrene (PS), and POEGMA#-PS with different charge fractions were prepared, where # denotes the mole fraction of charged monomers in the POEGMA chain. Here, the phase behavior was systematically studied using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and isothermal phase diagrams at 120 °C were constructed. The resulting isothermal planes contain a wide lamellar (LAM) phase window with a slight deviation from symmetry for ion-containing ternary blends, due to the homopolymer size difference. Given the absence of any significant change in the phase diagrams as the charge fraction increases, the role of charge is primarily to increase the segregation strength in the ternary system, as in the case of partially charged diblock polymers. In addition, examination of the increase in domain size along the volumetrically symmetric isopleth reveals a “dry-brush” like swelling behavior of homopolymers in all three blends, presumably due to the space-filling nature of the oligomeric ethylene glycol side chains on POEGMA.

Phase Behavior of Diblock Copolymer–Homopolymer Ternary Blends with a Compositionally Asymmetric Diblock Copolymer

The phase behavior of ternary polymer blends comprising poly(cyclohexylethylene) (C) and polyethylene (E) homopolymers and a compositionally asymmetric CE diblock copolymer with f C = 0.67 was investigated, where f C is the volume fraction of C. Morphology was established in the phase prism (volume fractions of C, E, and CE vs. temperature) by optical transmission, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements. The locations of lamellar (LAM), hexagonally packed cylinders (HEX), and gyroid (GYR) ordered phases are shifted significantly towards lower fractions of C homopolymer compared to previous results obtained from ternary polymer blends with a symmetric diblock copolymer (f C = 0.5). Conversely, the Scott line of critical points, which delineates the boundary between single-phase disorder and macroscopic phase separation, remains virtually unchanged, coincident with the fraction of C homopolymer associated with the binary homopolymer blend critical composition. A central finding of this study is that the line of nearly congruent order-disorder transitions, where the LAM phase melts virtually directly into the disordered state, is decoupled in composition from that of the Scott line of critical points. A wide range of phase space between the compositions associated with the congruent transition and Scott line was identified as containing a microemulsion morphology. This study demonstrates that diblock copolymer compositional asymmetry significantly impacts the ordered phase regime but has a marginal effect on the region displaying macroscopic phase separation. It also provides useful guidance for tuning interfacial curvature, a crucial factor in the formation of bicontinuous microemulsions (BµEs).

Solution-Grown Ternary Semiconductors: Nanostructuring and Stereoelectronic Lone Pair Distortions in I–V–VI 2 Materials

Alkali pnictogen dichalcogenides–I–V–VI 2 or APnCh 2 –have been identified as promising semiconducting materials for energy conversion devices. However, the controlled nanoscale synthesis and our understanding of the effects of cation ordering and stereochemically active lone pairs on the structures of these ternary compounds remain underdeveloped. Here, we use solution-phase chemistry to synthesize a family of APnCh 2 materials, including LiSbSe 2 , NaSbS 2 , NaSbSe 2 , NaBiS 2 , and NaBiSe 2 . Our approach utilizes alkali metal hydrides (AH) or carboxylates, A(O 2 CR), PnPh 3 , and elemental chalcogens as synthetic precursors and oleylamine or 1-octadecene as solvents. Synthetic manipulation via fine-tuning of reaction temperature enables control over the degree of ordering caused by the Sb 5s 2 lone pair-induced distortions in NaSbS 2 . Pair distribution function analysis demonstrates that the structure of the Sb-containing phases deviates much more from a disordered rock salt structure than that of the Bi-containing phases. This local distortion, induced by the Sb lone pair, leads to a previously unreported noncentrosymmetric NaSbS 2 crystal structure, which is additionally supported by second-harmonic generation measurements. Infrared and multinuclear solid-state NMR spectroscopies show that oleylamine or chelating carboxylates and, in some cases, unreacted precursors (LiH and PnPh 3 ) remain bound to the nanocrystalline surfaces. Further, a deeper understanding of the local atomic environment, long-range ordering, surface chemistry, and optoelectronic properties of these materials may speed up their fundamental study and application.

Ternary Phase Diagram of Water/Bio-Oil/Organic Solvent for Bio-Oil Fractionation

Separating bio-oil by fractionation with different chemical composition is a critical step to refine these oils and obtain high value products. Cold-water precipitation of pyrolytic lignin from bio-oil is the most common approach used. However, the obtained aqueous phase from this method still contain phenols, is diluted and difficult to use. In this study, the use of liquid-liquid extraction with different solvents (1-butanol, ethyl acetate, 1-octanol, dichloromethane, toluene, and hexane) for the separation of targeted molecules (lignin oligomers, sugars, acetic acid) is explored. Ternary phase diagrams for the organic solvent/water/bio-oil are reported. The partition coefficient of compounds of interest (both light and heavy fraction) is reported for the liquid-liquid equilibrium zone. When using butanol as solvent, the highest separation factor of total phenols over total sugars was observed. Furthermore, our results provide information to design L-L separation units with the capacity to selectively recover targeted molecules from pyrolysis oils.

Electrochemical Oxidation of Metal–Catechol Complexes as a New Synthesis Route to the High-Quality Ternary Photoelectrodes: A Case Study of Fe 2 TiO 5 Photoanodes

A new electrochemical, solution-based synthesis method to prepare uniform multinary oxide photoelectrodes was developed. This method involves solubilizing multiple metal ions as metal-catechol complexes in a pH condition where they are otherwise insoluble. When some of the catechol ligands are electrochemically oxidized, the remaining metal complexes become insoluble and are deposited as metal-catechol films on the working electrode. The resulting films are then annealed to form crystalline multinary oxide electrodes. Since catechol can serve as a complexing agent for a variety of metal ions, the newly developed method can be used to prepare a variety of multinary oxide films. In the present study, we used this method to prepare n-type Fe 2 TiO 5 photoanodes and investigated their photoelectrochemical properties for use in a photoelectrochemical water splitting cell. We also performed a computational investigation with two goals. The first goal was to investigate small electron polaron formation in Fe 2 TiO 5 . Charge transport in most oxide photoelectrodes involves small polaron hopping, but small polaron formation in Fe 2 TiO 5 has not been examined prior to this work. The second goal was to investigate the effect of substitutional Sn doping at the Fe site on the electronic band structure and the carrier concentration of Fe 2 TiO 5 . Here, the combined experimental and theoretical results presented in this study greatly improve our understanding of Fe 2 TiO 5 for use as a photoanode.

Predicting nepheline precipitation in waste glasses using ternary submixture model and machine learning

Nepheline precipitation in nuclear waste glasses during vitrification can be detrimental due to its negative effect on chemical durability. Developing models to accurately predict nepheline precipitation from compositions is important to increase waste loading since existing models can be overly conservative. In this study, an expanded dataset containing 955 glasses was compiled from literature data, where 355 glasses are for high-level waste (HLW). Previously developed submixture models were refitted using the new dataset, where a misclassification rate of 7.8% was achieved. Nine machine learning (ML) algorithms (e.g., k-nearest neighbor, Gaussian process regression, artificial neural network, support vector machine, decision tree, etc.) were applied to evaluate their ability of predicting nepheline precipitation from compositions. Model accuracy, precision, recall/sensitivity, and F1 score were systemically compared between different ML algorithms and modeling protocols. Good model prediction with an accuracy ~0.9 (misclassification rate of ~10%) was observed with different algorithms under certain protocol. This study evaluated various ML models to predict nepheline precipitations in waste glasses, highlighting the importance of data preparation, modeling protocol, and their effect on model stability and reproducibility. The results provide insights into applying ML to predict glass properties and suggest areas for future research on modeling nepheline precipitations.
