H2SO4-HNO3-H2O ternary system in the stratosphere

Estimation of the equilibrium vapor pressure over the ternary system H2SO4-HNO3-H2O to study the possibility of stratospheric aerosol formation involving HNO3. It is shown that the vapor pressures for the ternary system H2SO4-HNO3-H2O with weight composition around 70-80% H2SO4, 10-20% HNO3, 10-20% H2O at -50 C are below the order of 10 to the minus 8th mm Hg. It is concluded that there exists more than sufficient nitric acid and water vapor in the stratosphere to participate in ternary system aerosol formation at -50 C. Therefore, HNO3 should be present in stratospheric aerosols, provided that H2SO4 is also present.

The Li–F–H ternary system at high pressures

Evolutionary crystal structure prediction searches have been employed to explore the ternary Li-F-H system at 300 GPa. Metastable phases were uncovered within the static lattice approximation, with LiF 3 H 2 , LiF 2 H, Li 3 F 4 H, LiF 4 H 4 , Li 2 F 3 H and LiF 3 H lying within 50 meV/atom of the 0 K convex hull. All of these phases contain H n F¯ n+1 (n = 1; 2) anions, and Li + cations. Other structural motifs such as LiF slabs, $H$ $^{+}_{3}$ molecules and F δ- ions are present in some of the low enthalpy Li-F-H structures. The bonding within the H n F¯ n+1 molecules, which may be bent or linear, symmetric or asymmetric, is analyzed. The five phases closest to the hull are insulators, while LiF 3 H is metallic and predicted to have a vanishingly small superconducting critical temperature. Li 3 F 4 H is predicted to be stable at zero pressure. Furthermore, this study lays the foundation for future investigations of the role of temperature and anharmonicity on the stability and properties of compounds and alloys in the Li-F-H ternary system.

On the Growth of Ternary System HNO3/H2SO4/H2O Aerosol Particles in the Stratosphere

We present a study of the growth of ternary solution (nitric acid, sulfuric acid and water) droplets in the stratosphere. The growth mechanism is hetero-molecular condensation in which the particle is assumed to be in equilibrium with environmental water vapor. Model results are in reasonable agreement with the averaged extinction ratio obtained by the SAM II satellite system.

Normal freezing of ideal ternary systems of the pseudobinary type

Perfect liquid mixing but no solid diffusion is assumed in normal freezing. In addition, the molar compositions of the freezing solid and remaining liquid, respectively, follow the solidus and liquidus curves of the constitutional diagram. For the linear case, in which both the liquidus and solidus are perfectly straight lines, the normal freezing equation giving the fraction solidified at each melt temperature and the solute concentration profile in the frozen solid was determined as early as 1902, and has since been repeatedly published. Corresponding equations for quadratic, cubic or higher-degree liquidus and solidus lines have also been obtained. The equation of normal freezing for ideal ternary liquid solutions solidified into ideal solid solutions of the pseudobinary type is given. Sample computations with the use of this new equation were made and are given for the Ga-Al-As system.

Experimental and computational studies of melting of the spinel phase in the Fe–Al–O ternary system

The melting behavior of spinel in the Fe–Al–O system at high temperatures (1500–1800 °C) was studied by a combination of experimental and computational investigations. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) at ultra-high temperatures coupled with cooling traces on CO 2 laser-heated levitated samples provided melting temperatures and the heats of fusion of (Fe,Al) 3 O 4 spinel phases. The experimental results are in fair agreement with the predictions using a published CALPHAD description and areas for modeling improvement are identified. New insights into the melting of defect spinel are provided.

Thermodynamic analysis of dilute ternary systems. 1. The Ag-Au-Sn system

The heats of solution of silver and gold in dilute Ag-Au-Sn alloys have been determined as a function of alloy composition using liquid metal solution calorimetry. From the values obtained, the various enthalpy interaction parameters in the liquid solutions have been calculated. The results are interpreted in terms of the probably bonding changes taking place between silver, gold and tin atoms.

Electroepitaxy of multicomponent systems - Ternary and quarternary compounds

A theoretical model is presented which accounts for the electroepitaxial growth kinetics and composition of multicomponent compounds in terms of mass transport in the liquid and phase diagram relationships. The mass transport in the interface is dominated by electromigration in the absence of convection and by diffusion in the presence of convection. The composition of the solid is controlled by the Peltier effect at the growth interface and by the diffusion and mobility constants of the solute components and the growth velocity (current density). Thus, for a given solution composition, the composition of the solid can be varied by varying the current density. For a given current density the composition remains constant even in the case of relatively thick epitaxial layers. All aspects of the model were found to be in good agreement with the growth and composition characteristics of Ga/x-1/Al/x/As layers.
