The Li–F–H ternary system at high pressures

Evolutionary crystal structure prediction searches have been employed to explore the ternary Li-F-H system at 300 GPa. Metastable phases were uncovered within the static lattice approximation, with LiF 3 H 2 , LiF 2 H, Li 3 F 4 H, LiF 4 H 4 , Li 2 F 3 H and LiF 3 H lying within 50 meV/atom of the 0 K convex hull. All of these phases contain H n F¯ n+1 (n = 1; 2) anions, and Li + cations. Other structural motifs such as LiF slabs, $H$ $^{+}_{3}$ molecules and F δ- ions are present in some of the low enthalpy Li-F-H structures. The bonding within the H n F¯ n+1 molecules, which may be bent or linear, symmetric or asymmetric, is analyzed. The five phases closest to the hull are insulators, while LiF 3 H is metallic and predicted to have a vanishingly small superconducting critical temperature. Li 3 F 4 H is predicted to be stable at zero pressure. Furthermore, this study lays the foundation for future investigations of the role of temperature and anharmonicity on the stability and properties of compounds and alloys in the Li-F-H ternary system.

Experimental and computational studies of melting of the spinel phase in the Fe–Al–O ternary system

The melting behavior of spinel in the Fe–Al–O system at high temperatures (1500–1800 °C) was studied by a combination of experimental and computational investigations. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) at ultra-high temperatures coupled with cooling traces on CO 2 laser-heated levitated samples provided melting temperatures and the heats of fusion of (Fe,Al) 3 O 4 spinel phases. The experimental results are in fair agreement with the predictions using a published CALPHAD description and areas for modeling improvement are identified. New insights into the melting of defect spinel are provided.

Application of the Redlich-Kister expansion for estimating the density of molten fluoride psuedo-ternary salt systems of nuclear industry interest

The development of next-generation molten salt reactors relies on accurate knowledge of the thermophysical properties of the candidate coolant and fueled molten salts. These thermophysical properties include density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity. Because of difficulties in measuring thermophysical properties of molten salts, there are many gaps in the current state of thermophysical property knowledge of these salts, particularly those that contain actinides or beryllium. Therefore, leveraging modeling techniques to estimate unknown molten salt thermophysical properties and guide future experimental measurements has high value for the nuclear industry. Here, the densities of molten fluoride pseudo-ternary salt systems, which are of interest to the nuclear industry, were estimated using Redlich-Kister expansion and Muggianu interpolation techniques. The pseudo-ternary systems considered for estimation in this study were NaF-LiF-ZrF 4 , LiF-BeF 2 -ZrF 4 , LiF-BeF 2 -ThF 4 , NaF-LiF-BeF 2 , NaF-KF-BeF 2 , NaF-ZrF 4 -UF 4 , and NaF-BeF 2 -UF 4 . This Redlich-Kister estimation approach accounts for nonideal mixing behavior based on pseudo-binary subsystem interaction parameters determined from experimentally measured pseudo-binary system density data sets. The Redlich-Kister estimation was compared with the method of additive molar volumes, which assumes ideal mixing. Additionally, the Redlich-Kister approach was used to determine previously unknown binary and ternary interaction parameters based on experimentally measured density data sets for select pseudo-ternary salt systems. The results of this study show improvement in density estimation using the Redlich-Kister approach for all systems considered compared with estimation by additive molar volumes. Furthermore, this analysis allowed for the estimation of nonideal density behavior in experimentally unstudied ZrF 4 -UF 4 and BeF 2 -UF 4 , as well as the quantification of ternary interaction in NaF-LiF-ZrF 4 , NaF-BeF 2 -UF 4 , and NaF-ZrF 4 -UF 4 .

Thermodynamics of Deuterium Oxide Separations in Aqueous Two-Phase Systems

The thermodynamic behavior of aqueousorgame- toluene ternary systems where aqueous components are water (H 2 O) and deuterium oxide (D 2 O) and organic components are acetonitrile (MeCN), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and 1,4-dioxane (DIOX) have been recorded. Preliminary data has been taken for each ternary system to establish the concentration along the spinodal line where Gibbs energy is minimized. In pursuit of this goal, simple laboratory techniques using common equipment was used to benchmark thermodynamic measurements against values reported in the literature. The impact of deuterium on aqueous two-phase separations was determined for each combination of solvents.

Thermodynamic Modeling of the Al-Ce-Cu-Mg-Si System and Its Application to Aluminum-Cerium Alloy Design

Recently discovered AlCe alloys have shown promise in a number of applications, but the propensity of Ce to react with Al and other alloying elements can complicate the phase equilibria and design approach. To solve this, the CALPHAD method is used to explore an alloy within the quinary Al-Ce-Cu-Mg-Si system by developing a thermodynamic database with self-consistent parameters. The database includes a description of all 10 binary systems and 8 ternary systems consisting of: (i) 6 Al-containing ternaries (Al-Ce-Cu, Al-Ce-Mg, Al-Ce-Si, Al-Cu-Mg, Al-Cu-Si and Al-Mg-Si); and (ii) 2 additional ternaries that include Mg and Si (i.e., Ce-Mg-Si and Cu-Mg-Si). The thermodynamic description for the Al-Ce-Mg and Al-Mg-Si systems were reassessed to ensure consistency with the binary systems and the Ce-Mg-Si system is presented for the first time and compared to theoretical data from DFT (Density Functional Theory). In addition to the ternary interactions, the quaternary compound Al3Cu2Mg9Si7 and solid solution extending from the ternary Al2CuMg phase (Al,Si)2CuMg are incorporated. The CALPHAD method is employed and leveraged through the use of a Materials Design Simulator (MDS) to accelerate the design of novel aluminum-cerium-based alloys. The combination of a CALPHAD-based framework with experimental efforts and industrial insight permits the development of three new Al-Ce alloys: Al-3.5Ce-0.4Mg-7Si (Ce-modified A356), Al-5Ce-1Cu-0.5Mg-10Si and Al-19Ce-0.9Mg-1.1Si.

Continuous Counter‐Current Microfluidic Liquid–Liquid Extraction Achieved Using a Pair of Wettable Screen Meshes

Continuous counter‐current microfluidic liquid–liquid extraction performs separations by flowing immiscible liquids in opposing directions within a single flow channel. In principle, this flow arrangement enables a large number of theoretical separation units in a small footprint, without using interstage valving, pumping, and phase separation. Despite its potential for excellent separation performance, this microfluidic scheme rarely appears in literature due to the requirement for capillary forces to be greater than hydrodynamic forces for stable flow. We present a novel microfluidic device and flow approaches that overcome this force‐balance challenge, enabling stable, long‐duration continuous counter‐current flow. Additionally, we cover a suite of methodologies for quantifying the performance of the microfluidic device, revealing the number of theoretical equilibrium stages achieved. The enabling technologies include a woven mesh screen‐based microfluidic device architecture that is easily fabricated outside of a clean room, surface functionalization strategies to promote conjugate (organic/aqueous) wettability, flow approaches to eliminate bubbles and carryover, and computer‐aided flow automation with optical measurement of extraction performance. The reported experiments lasted for over 36 h, terminated only at experiment conclusion, where the device still exhibited good performance. Automated Raman spectroscopy was used for solute quantitation of the ternary system tert‐butanol in a toluene/water matrix, a ternary system that was specifically chosen to analyze the device's performance with a small solute partition ratio and to enable in‐line Raman measurements of solute concentrations in both phases. The microfluidic device possessed a 55 mm contact length and a 38.5 µL internal volume. During counter‐current flow, we observed approximately 37 equilibrium stages (37 ± 13) based on a best‐fit of the solute fraction remaining in the aqueous phase using a Kremser Group Method analysis.

Thermodynamic modeling of CsF with LiF-NaF-KF for molten fluoride-fueled reactors

Gibbs energy models were developed to describe the thermochemical behavior of CsF in molten FLiNaK (46.5LiF-11.5NaF-42KF mol%), a proposed molten salt reactor (MSR) fuel solvent and coolant, as cesium is of concern due to its high radiotoxicity and volatility. Initially, it was necessary to obtain a more accurate Gibbs energy function for CsF which required fitting parameters to reported vapor pressures over condensed phase CsF. The pseudo-binary systems CsF-LiF, CsF-NaF and CsF-KF were then evaluated utilizing phase equilibria and enthalpy of mixing (Δ mix H) values, together with original differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements performed for the CsF-LiF and CsF-KF systems. The CsF-LiF-NaF, CsF-LiF-KF and CsF-NaF-KF pseudo-ternary system representations were obtained by interpolation of the constituent pseudo-binary systems, with DSC measurements performed for the CsF-LiF-NaF system to corroborate the calculated liquidus temperature. Ultimately, the pseudo-ternary systems were interpolated to obtain Gibbs energy models for the pseudo-quaternary CsF-LiF-NaF-KF system, supported by DSC measurements at low CsF compositions (1–10 mol%), yielding computed equilibria and cesium-containing vapor pressures that compare favorably with reported values. In conclusion, the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database – Thermochemical (MSTDB-TC) was subsequently expanded to include these Gibbs energy models allowing description of the thermochemical behavior of the CsF-LiF-NaF-KF system.

Computational discovery of ultra-strong, stable, and lightweight refractory multi-principal element alloys. Part II: comprehensive ternary design and validation

Abstract Here the discovery of refractory multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) with high-temperature strength and stability is pursued within a constrained and application-relevant design space. A comprehensive approach is developed and applied to explore all 165 ternary systems in the Al-Ce-Fe-Hf-Mo-Nb-Ta-Ti-V-W-Zr family. A subset of ternary systems that contain large areas in composition–temperature space with high strength and robust BCC phase stability is found. Twelve sets of high-performing alloys are identified, each set optimized for one combination of phase constraint, optimization target, and temperature range. Preliminary mechanical tests support the viability of the method. This work highlights the importance of considering phase stability, exploring non-equiatomic regions of composition space, and applying application-relevant constraints. Parts I and II provide three down-selection techniques for identifying high-performing BCC refractory MPEAs, design guidelines, and many candidates predicted to have BCC phase stability and strengths 2–3 times higher than any reported to date.

Empirical estimation of densities in NaCl-KCl-UCl 3 and NaCl-KCl-YCl 3 molten salts using Redlich-Kister expansion

Densities of molten KCl-NaCl-UCl 3 and KCl-NaCl-YCl 3 ternary systems have been estimated using a multidimensional Redlich-Kister model. Temperature and composition dependent Redlich-Kister functions have been used to generate binary interaction parameters in the outlined ternary salt systems. These binary interactions have been used in the extrapolation to ternary system densities. The results of the density extrapolations by Muggianu interpolation scheme provide agreement within 2–3% for the NaCl-KCl-YCl 3 liquids and 11% in NaCl-KCl-UCl 3 liquids compared to the available experimental data. Modeling NaCl-KCl-UCl 3 molten phase density with a ternary interaction parameter improved the agreement within 4%. Thermophysical modeling used in this study has shown promising results for use in other material properties, such as viscosity, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity of the molten salts. Lastly, the outlined modeling method applied in these specific molten salt ternaries can be used for quaternary or higher multicomponent molten salt systems.

A New Family of Ternary Intermetallic Compounds with Dualistic Atomic Ordering – The ZIP Phases

A new family of nanostructured ternary intermetallic compounds − named the ZIP phases − is introduced in this work. The ZIP phases exhibit dualistic atomic ordering, i.e., they form two structural variants: one with the fcc diamond cubic structure (space group Fd$\bar{3}$m) and one with the hexagonal structure (space group P6 3 /mmc). They are also characterized by metallic behavior, ionic bonding, and atomic zigzagging. Powder metallurgical routes involving pressure-assisted densification are adopted to demonstrate ZIP phase synthesis in the Nb-Si-Ni, Nb-Si-Co, Ta-Si-Ni, V-Si-Ni, and Nb-Si-Fe ternary systems. Crucially, reactive hot pressing is capable of producing high-purity ZIP phase materials after the judicious, elemental system-specific optimization of the processing route. Synthesis of phase-pure materials – demonstrated in the Nb-Si-Ni ternary system by the synthesis of quasi phase-pure Nb 3 SiNi 2 and Ni 3 SiNb 2 ZIP phase-based materials – is a steppingstone to the prospective exploitation of the ZIP phases. Characterization of Nb 3 SiNi 2 and Ni 3 SiNb 2 involves crystal structure determination, spatially resolved chemical analysis, and determination of select thermal, electrical, magnetic, mechanical, and physical properties. Density functional theory is used to assess the stability of Nb 3 SiNi 2 & Ni 3 SiNb 2 and derivative binary compounds at different temperatures, also exploring the exfoliation of these two ZIP phases along specific surfaces to produce 2D derivatives.

Theoretical search for possible Li–Ni–B crystal structures using an adaptive genetic algorithm

The structural diversity of rare-earth and transition metal borides indicates that alkali-transition metal borides (A-T-B) show tremendous promise in exhibiting a variety of crystal structures with different dimensionalities of T-B frameworks. On the other hand, the A-T-B ternary systems are severely underexplored because of the synthetic challenges associated with their preparation. Accurate and efficient computational predictions of low-energy stable and metastable phases can identify the optimal compositions of the hypothetical compounds in the A-T-B systems to guide the synthesis. As such, in this work, we have computationally discovered several new phases in the Li–Ni–B ternary system. The newly discovered LiNiB, Li 2 Ni 3 B, and Li 2 NiB phases expand the existing theoretical database, and the convex-hull surface of Li–Ni–B has been re-constructed. The lowest energy structure of the LiNiB compound has been found by an adaptive genetic algorithm with layered motif, which matches with the experimentally determined structure. According to our electrochemical calculations, LiNiB and another predicted layered Li 2 NiB compounds have great potential as anode materials for lithium batteries. The Li 2 Ni 3 B compound with the space group P4 3 32 was predicted to crystallize in a cubic structure composed of distorted octahedral units of BNi 6 , which is isostructural to two noncentrosymmetric superconductors Li 2 Pd 3 B and Li 2 Pt 3 B. While we were unable to experimentally confirm the Li 2 Ni 3 B compound utilizing the hydride synthetic route, attempts to synthesize this compound by alternate methods remain highly desirable, considering its potential superconducting properties.

Phase formation in the CaO–Al 2 O 3 –ZnO system as an analogue to CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO in spinel containing refractories

Recently, gahnite (ZnAl 2 O 4 ) is gaining attraction as a potential refractory ceramic because of the similarity of its structure and properties with those of magnesium aluminate (MgAl 2 O 4 ) spinel refractories. Formation of MgO and hibonite solid solution (CaMg x Al 12−x O 19−0.5x ; 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.18), CAM-I (Ca 2 Mg 2−3x Al 28+2x O 46 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3), and CAM-II (CaMg 2−3x Al 16+2x O 27 , 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) phases with platelet and interlocking microstructure in the CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO ternary system significantly enhances the high temperature mechanical properties of refractory castables. The CaO–Al 2 O 3 –ZnO ternary system has been studied, for the first time to our knowledge, in a selected compositional range with reference to the CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO system from 1650°C to 1700°C. The formation of ZnO and hibonite solid solution (CaZn x Al 12−x O 19−0.5x ; 0 < x < 0.18), CAZ-I (Ca 2 Zn 2−3x Al 28+2x O 46 ; 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3), and CAZ-II (CaZn 2−3x Al 16+2x O 27 ; 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) phases with platelet and interlocking morphology have been found. The crystal structures and lattice parameters of ZnO and hibonite solid solution, CAZ-I, and CAZ-II are comparable, respectively, with MgO and hibonite solid solution, CAM-I, and CAM-II. Furthermore, CAZ-I and CAZ-II phases also form due to reaction between hibonite (CaO·6Al 2 O 3 ) and ZnAl 2 O 4 .

A Neural Network Approach to Predict Gibbs Free Energy of Ternary Solid Solutions

Here, we present a data-centric deep learning (DL) approach using neural networks (NNs) to predict the thermodynamics of ternary solid solutions. We explore how NNs can be trained with a dataset of Gibbs free energies computed from a CALPHAD database to predict ternary systems as a function of composition and temperature. We have chosen the energetics of the FCC solid solution phase in 226 binaries consisting of 23 elements at 11 different temperatures to demonstrate the feasibility. The number of binary data points included in the present study is 102,000. We select six ternaries to augment the binary dataset to investigate their influence on the NN prediction accuracy. We examine the sensitivity of data sampling on the prediction accuracy of NNs over selected ternary systems. It is anticipated that the current DL workflow can be further elevated by integrating advanced descriptors beyond the elemental composition and more curated training datasets to improve prediction accuracy and applicability.
