Impact of Ionic Liquid on Lithium Ion Battery with a Solid Poly(Ionic Liquid) Pentablock Terpolymer as Electrolyte and Separator

In this work, a ternary blend solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) consisting of a poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) multiblock polymer, lithium salt, and ionic liquid (IL) was investigated with the goal of understanding the influence of IL concentration on ion transport mechanisms and electrochemical stability. The physical, transport, mechanical, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the ternary blend SPE were systematically investigated as a function of IL concentration (r = [IL]/[PIL] mole ratio between 0.1 and 0.7). The results indicate that with increasing IL concentration, the continuous conductive domain increases along with the polymer chain segmental mobility, as well as facilitate ionic conductivity, while the mechanical modulus exhibits a percolation threshold (from 52.17 MPa to 0.55 MPa at r = 0.2 to 0.3). Surprisingly, at higher IL concentrations, there is a reduction in the lithium cation mobility (i.e., 9.3 × 10-12 m2 s-1 versus 3.8 × 10-12 m2 s-1 for r = 0.2 versus r = 0.5, respectively) as evidenced by pulsed-field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-NMR), which coincides with an increased overpotential (i.e., 50 mV versus 150 mV for r = 0.2 versus r = 0.5, respectively) evidenced by lithium metal stripping and plating. This work provides valuable insights into the impact of IL on lithium ion conducting PIL block polymers, which may enable the design of new SPEs with both high ionic conductivity and improved stability for the future lithium ion batteries.

Terpolymer Donor with Inside Alkyl Substituents on Thiophene π ‐Bridges toward Thiazolothiazole A 2 ‐Unit Enables 18.21% Efficiency of Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract PM6 is a widely used D–A copolymer donor in the polymer solar cells (PSCs). Incorporating second electron‐withdrawing (A 2 ) units into PM6 backbone by ternary D–A 1 –D–A 2 random copolymerization strategy is an effective approach to further improve its photovoltaic performance. Here, the authors synthesize the PM6‐based terpolymers by introducing thiazolothiazole as the A 2 units connecting with thiophene π‐bridges attaching alkyl substituent towards the A 2 unit (PMT‐CT) or towards D‐unit (PMT‐FT), and study the effect of the alkyl substituent position on the photovoltaic performance of them. Two terpolymers PMT‐FT‐10 and PMT‐CT‐10 are obtained by incorporating 10% A 2 units in the terpolymers. The film of PMT‐CT‐10 shows slightly up‐shifted highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels while better co‐planar structure than that of PMT‐FT‐10. Meanwhile, the PMT‐CT‐10:Y6 blend film exhibits better molecular packing properties, more proper phase separation and more balanced hole and electron mobilities, which are beneficial to more efficient exciton dissociation, efficient charge transport and weaker bimolecular recombination. Consequently, the PMT‐CT‐10 based PSCs obtain the highest power conversion efficiency of 18.21%. The results indicate that side chain position on the thiophene π‐bridges influence the device performance of the terpolymer donors, and PMT‐CT‐10 is a high efficiency polymer donor for the PSCs.

Morphology–Diffusivity Relationships in Fluorine-Free Random Terpolymers for Proton-Exchange Membranes

Here, using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the morphology and transport properties of a new family of fluorine-free terpolymers designed as proton-exchange membranes. Simulated random terpolymers consist of three monomers with a 5-carbon backbone with a phenylsulfonate, phenyl, or no pendant group and have ion exchange capacities (IECs) ranging from 1.06–4.14 mmol/g. At a hydration level of 9, cluster analysis reveals macrophase separation between water and terpolymers with IEC < 2.1 mmol/g and continuous, percolated hydrophilic and hydrophobic nanoscale domains at higher IECs. Channel width distribution analysis of the percolated morphologies revealed that more hydrophobic units produce less uniform channels. Decreasing the surface area per sulfonate group and increasing the fractal dimension of the hydrophilic domains correlate with increased water diffusivity, due to a more acidic interface and more isotropic water channels. Relative to the previously studied phenylsulfonate homopolymer, these terpolymers with lower IECs have only modestly lower water diffusion, and we anticipate other advantages related to processability.

Introducing Low-Cost Pyrazine Unit into Terpolymer Enables High-Performance Polymer Solar Cells with Efficiency of 18.23%

Recently, a random ternary copolymerization strategy has become a promising and efficient approach to develop high-performance polymer donors for polymer solar cells (PSCs). Here, in this study, a low-cost electron-withdrawing unit, 2,5-bis(4-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)pyrazine (PZ-T), is incorporated into the polymer backbone of PM6 as the third component, and three D-A 1 -D-A 2 type terpolymers PMZ-10, PMZ-20, and PMZ-30 are synthesized by the random copolymerization strategy, with the PZ-T proportion of 10%, 20%, and 30%, respectively. The terpolymers exhibit downshifted highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels than PM6, which is beneficial for obtaining higher open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of the PSCs with the polymer as a donor. Importantly, the PSCs based on PMZ-10:Y6 demonstrate efficient exciton dissociation, higher and balanced electron/hole mobilities, desirable aggregation, and high power conversion efficiency of 18.23%, which is the highest efficiency among the terpolymer-based PSCs so far. The results indicate that the ternary copolymerization strategy with PZ-T as the second A-unit is an efficient approach to further improve the photovoltaic performance and reduce the synthetic cost of the D-A copolymer donors.

Saddle-Shaped Third Component with Out-of-Plane Electrostatic Dipole for Realizing High-Performance Photovoltaic Donor Terpolymers

Terpolymer fabrication is an effective methodology for molecular engineering and generating high-performance organic photovoltaic materials to construct highly efficient polymer solar cells. Modification of the polymer PM6 by incorporating a third component resulting in the formation of a ternary copolymer is reported to outperform PM6 in achieving enhanced device performances. However, one of the major challenges in constructing high-performance terpolymers is to counter the molecular disorder caused by the backbone entropy induced by the third moiety. Here, in this work, double B←N bridged bipyridine (BNBP) is used as the third component, which possesses a strong out-of-plane electrostatic dipole owing to the saddle-shaped B←N fused ring structure. The out-of-plane dipole moment introduced in the modified PM6 terpolymer can be used as a means for tuning and optimizing the nanostructures of the blended films. The prepared PM6-BNBP-4 blend polymer with 4% of the benzodithiophene dione monomers replaced by BNBP results in excellent power conversion efficiency of 19.13%. This work demonstrates that the out-of-plane electrostatic dipole moment in saddle-shaped molecules is valuable for achieving high-performance organic photovoltaic donor materials.

Operando Investigation of the Molecular Origins of Dipole Switching in P(VDF‐TrFE‐CFE) Terpolymer for Large Adiabatic Temperature Change

Abstract Relaxor ferroelectric polymers exhibiting a giant electrocaloric effect (ECE) can potentially be used to create next‐generation solid‐state coolers. Under an electric field, poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene‐chlorofluoroethylene) terpolymer goes through a large dipolar entropy change producing a high adiabatic temperature change (Δ T ECE ). This work resolves the molecular origins of the large entropy change behind the electric field‐induced dipole switching. A Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy equipped with a high voltage source is used to operandoly observe the characteristic molecular vibrational modes. A short‐range trans (T) conformation of the CF 2 ‐CH 2 dyads interrupted by a gauche (G) conformation, e.g., TTTG in the terpolymer chain, undergoes a dynamic transformation that leads to a corresponding Δ T ECE whenever an electric field is applied. The molecular dynamics simulation also proves that the energy barrier that the transformation from TTTGs into a long T sequence overcomes is smaller than that for all other conformations. A mixed solvent system is used to obtain T3G‐enriched terpolymer films exhibiting a 4.02 K Δ T ECE at 60 MV m −1 and these films are employed to manufacture a 2‐layer‐cascaded cooling device that achieves a 6.7 K temperature lift, the highest reported value for a 2‐layer cascaded device made of fluoropolymers.

Freestanding self-assembled sulfonated pentablock terpolymer membranes for high flux pervaporation desalination

Pervaporation desalination has several advantages over competing desalination technologies, most notably an ability to select for or against volatile organic compounds and the ability to process high salinity feeds at a low transmembrane pressure. Pervaporation has not been commercialized for desalination applications because of its energy intensity. However, emerging processes such as hydraulic fracturing produce high total dissolved solids (>30-45 g/L) byproduct streams that exceed the operational limits of traditional reverse osmosis and could be treated by pervaporation. Here, we demonstrate free-standing pervaporation membranes with excellent permeance and high salt removal based on a partially sulfonated pentablock terpolymer with the tradename Nexar™. Pervaporation membranes were easily cast from this material with desalination performances comparable or superior to commercially available membranes. We found that the polymer degree of sulfonation and casting solvent polarity had a significant impact on the membranes’ water uptake but only a modest impact on the pervaporation desalination performance. Membranes with a degree of sulfonation of 52% (2.0 meq g –1 IEC) and a casting solution composed of 50 wt% n-propanol and 50 wt% toluene achieved a water flux of 3.32 kg m -2 h -1 (permeance 135 kg m -2 h -1 bar -1 ) with 99.5% salt removal in pervaporation from a 32 g/L –1 sodium chloride feed solution at room temperature. We demonstrated that dense, non-porous NexarTM pervaporation membrane permeance and salt separation performance were superior to commercial pervaporation membranes and equivalent to commercial membrane distillation membranes, which have much larger pores. Here, this study demonstrates that commercially available sulfonated pentablock terpolymers are excellent membranes for pervaporation desalination because of their ease of casting and excellent performance.

Polythiophene-based terpolymers with modulated aggregation behaviors for high-performance organic solar cells with 16.6% efficiency

Polythiophenes (PTs) are an attractive class of polymer donors (PDs) for organic solar cells (OSCs) owing to their relatively simple structures and scalable synthesis. Herein, a series of chlorinated thiazole-incorporated PT terpolymers are designed and high-performance OSCs with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.6% are demonstrated. By incorporating two different units, 3,3'-difluoro-2,2'-bithiophene (T2F2) and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT), the aggregation properties of the terpolymers (PTz-FX; X = 0, 30, 50, 70, and 100, where X represents the mole percentage of T2F2 to total T2F2 +TT) are modulated. Among the PTz-FX series, PTz-F70 is found to be the optimal P D because its suitably tuned aggregation property leads to an optimized blend morphology with well-developed crystalline structures and donor–acceptor intermixed domains. The balanced morphology not only promotes charge generation/transport but also suppresses charge recombination in OSC devices. Thus, the PTz-F70-based OSCs achieve the highest PCE (16.6%), outperforming the OSCs based on PTz-FX with extremely strong (PTz-F100, PCE = 14.7%) or weak (PTz-F0, PCE = 12.0%) aggregation properties. The PCE of the PTz-F70-based OSCs is one of the highest performances among PT-based binary OSCs. Finally, this study highlights the importance of controlling the aggregation property of PTs for achieving high-performance PT-based OSCs.

Tetrahydrofuran Processable Organic Solar Cells with 19.45% Efficiency Realized by Introducing High Molecular Dipole Unit Into the Terpolymer

Developing organic solar cells (OSCs) processable with halogen‐free, non‐aromatic solvents is crucial for practical applications, yet challenging due to the limited solubility of most photoactive materials. Here, this study introduces high‐performance terpolymers processable in tetrahydrofuran (THF) by incorporating dithienophthalimide (DPI) into the PM6 backbone. DPI extends the absorption band, lowers HOMO levels, and improves THF solubility and film crystallinity through its large dipole moment effect. Optimal PBD‐10:L8‐BO devices processed with THF achieved a competitive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.79%, approaching chloroform‐processed devices (19.04%). By introducing PBTz‐F as a second donor, ternary OSCs reached an impressive 19.45% PCE when processed with THF. This improvement stems from enhanced photon generation, improved morphology, better charge transport, longer exciton lifetimes, efficient charge dissociation and collection, and suppressed recombination. These PCEs of 18.79% and 19.45% for binary and ternary blend OSCs, respectively, represent the highest reported efficiencies for OSCs processed with halogen‐free, non‐aromatic solvents. This work demonstrates significant progress in eco‐friendly OSC fabrication, paving the way for more sustainable and commercially viable organic photovoltaic technologies.

Resolving Triblock Terpolymer Morphologies by Vapor-Phase Infiltration

The spontaneous formation of well-organized three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures from self-assembled block copolymers (BCPs) holds promise for nanofabrication and lithography. The addition of a third block to BCPs provides access to a plethora of 3D geometries, but it remains difficult to resolve the geometry of such “three-color” structures when there is low contrast between the polymeric components at length scales of a few nm. Here, we apply vapor-phase infiltration synthesis to a silicon-containing triblock terpolymer, poly(1,1- dimethyl silacyclobutane-b-styrene-b-lactide) (PDMSB-b-PS-b-PLA or DSL) to distinguish the 3D microdomain morphologies of the two organic blocks, PLA and PS. Selective infiltration of ZnO within the PLA microdomains reveals morphologies consisting of three-color lamellae or lamellae combined with vertically aligned core-shell cylinders, depending on the volume fractions of each block. The infiltration produces ZnO nanoparticles throughout the 260 nm thickness of the DSL film, generating 3D nanocomposites containing ZnO and SiO x . These results provide a strategy for synthesizing multicomponent 3D nanostructures as well as visualizing the phase behavior of multi-block copolymers.

Stable and unstable tiling patterns formed by ABC miktoarm star triblock terpolymers of symmetric interactions

Several discrepancies exist among previous self-consistent field calculations of symmetrically interacting ABC miktoarm star triblock terpolymer melts. Here we address this issue by including all known tiling patterns, as well as several lamellar-type phases known to bound the regions in the parameter space occupied by these patterns. After carefully studying the effect of numerical parameters on the free-energy accuracy, the central region of the phase diagram is constructed in detail; both the (3.4.6.4) pattern and the three-dimensional phase of hierarchical-hexagonal lamellae are found to be stable for the first time. The energetic and entropic contributions to the free-energy density of several phases are analyzed and compared in detail to reveal their stability mechanisms, including the important ( 3 2 .4.3.4) pattern. Comparisons to previous studies of the same model system are present throughout, with our results resolving the aforementioned discrepancies and providing a sound basis for future work to build upon. Improved Fuel Cell Chemical Durability of an Heteropoly Acid Functionalized Perfluorinated Terpolymer-Perfluorosulfonic Acid Composite Membrane

Commercial proton exchange membrane heavy-duty fuel cell vehicles will require a five-fold increase in durability compared to current state-of-the art light-duty fuel cell vehicles. We describe a new composite membrane that incorporates silicotungstic heteroply acid (HPA), α -K 8 SiW 11 O 40 ▪13H 2 O, a radical decomposition catalyst and when acid-exchanged can potentially conduct protons. The HPA was covalently bound to a terpolymer of tetrafluoroethylene, vinylidene fluoride, and sulfonyl fluoride containing monomer (1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4-octafluoro-4-((1,2,2-trifluorovinyl)oxy)butane-1-sulfonyl fluoride) by dehydrofluorination followed by addition of diethyl (4-hydroxyphenyl) phosphonate, giving a perfluorosulfonic acid-vinylidene fluoride-heteropoly acid (PFSA-VDF-HPA). A composite membrane was fabricated using a blend of the PFSA-VDF-HPA and the 800EW 3M perfluoro sulfonic acid polymer. The bottom liner-side of the membrane tended to have a higher proportion of HPA moieties compared to the air-side as gravity caused the higher mass density PFSA-VDF-HPA to settle. The composite membrane was shown to have less swelling, more hydrophobic properties, and higher crystallinity than the pure PFSA membrane. The proton conductivity of the membrane was 0.130 ± 0.03 S cm −1 at 80 °C and 95% RH. Impressively, when the membrane with HPA-rich side was facing the anode, the membrane survived more than 800 h under accelerated stress test conditions of open-circuit voltage, 90 °C and 30% RH.

Exploring internal structures and properties of terpolymer fibers via real-space characterizations

While significant research has investigated the processing and properties of high-performance terpolymer fibers, much remains to be understood about the internal nano- and microstructures of these fibers, and how these morphologies relate to fiber properties. Here we use a focused ion beam notch technique and multifrequency atomic force microscope mapping to characterize the internal structure and local mechanical properties within Technora ® fibers. We find a highly fibrillated structure that appears to connect with both the fiber’s molecular chemistry and full-fiber mechanical properties. In addition, through detailed comparisons with Kevlar ® K29 fibers, we find remarkable differences between the internal structures of the two fibers, and posit connections between our measurements and multifunctional performance studies from the literature.

B—N–Bond–Embedded Triplet Terpolymers with Small Singlet–Triplet Energy Gaps for Suppressing Non–Radiative Recombination and Improving Blend Morphology in Organic Solar Cells

Suppressing the photon energy loss (E loss ), especially the non-radiative loss, is of importance to further improve the device performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, typical π-conjugated semiconductors possess a large singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔE ST ), leading to a lower triplet state than charge transfer state and contributing to a non-radiative loss channel of the photocurrent by the triplet state. Herein, a series of triplet polymer donors are developed by introducing a BNIDT block into the PM6 polymer backbone. Further, the high electron affinity of BNIDT and the opposite resonance effect of the B—N bond in BNIDT results in a lowered highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and a largely reduced ΔE ST . Moreover, the morphology of the active blends is also optimized by fine-tuning the BNIDT content. Therefore, non-radiative recombination via the terminal triplet loss channels and morphology traps is effectively suppressed. The PNB-3 (with 3% BNIDT):L8-BO device exhibits both small ΔE ST and optimized morphology, favoring more efficient charge transfer and transport. Finally, the simultaneously enhanced V oc of 0.907 V, J sc of 26.59 mA cm –2 , and FF of 78.86% contribute to a champion PCE of 19.02%. Therefore, introducing B—N bonds into benchmark polymers is a possible avenue toward higher-performance of OSCs.

Thermal stability of filler‐based ethylene/vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol terpolymer in nitroplasticizer oxidative environment

Abstract To study the thermal stability of ethylene/vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol (EVA‐OH) composite with filler particles, systematic thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) investigation was conducted in both nonisothermal and isothermal modes. The effect of polymer concentration on the aging behavior of EVA‐OH was investigated in the nitroplasticizer (NP) environment. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to probe chemical structural changes in the EVA‐OH polymer before and after thermal aging. The results suggest that filler addition accelerates the rate of NP exudation out of the EVA‐OH composites and deteriorates the thermal stability of NP at moderate temperatures (up to 70°C). The degradation of NP, in turn, accelerates the degradation of EVA‐OH polymer in its composite form through oxidation and hydrolysis indicating the importance of antioxidants in such phase blends.
