Doping topological Dirac semimetal with magnetic impurities: Electronic structure of Mn-doped Cd 3 ⁢As 2

The prospect of transforming a Dirac topological semimetal (TSM) into a Weyl TSM phase, following doping by magnetic impurities, is central to TSM applications. The magnetic field from polarized 𝑑 levels of magnetic impurities produces a field with a sharp local structure. To what extent magnetic impurities act in the same manner as an applied field and what are the effects of such a field on the electronic structure of a Dirac TSM are the subject of this paper. We present electronic structure calculations of bulk Cd 3 ⁢As 2 with substitutional doping of Mn impurities in the dilute alloy range. Quasiparticle 𝐺⁡𝑊 (QS⁢𝐺⁡𝑊) ab initio electronic structure calculations are used in conjunction with 𝑘 · 𝑝 model Hamiltonian calculations. As expected, we observe the splitting of the Dirac points into pairs of Weyl points following the doping with Mn. We also show that the electronic structure of Mn-doped Cd 3⁢ As 2 can be emulated by the electronic structure of pristine Cd 3⁢ As 2 with an appropriate external magnetic field. Some properties of the conductivity of bulk Cd 3 ⁢As 2 for different magnetic field orientations are also investigated. Our results inform future opportunities for unique device functionality based on band structure tuning not found in conventional magnetic Weyl TSM.

Switching of a Magnet by Spin-Orbit Torque from a Topological Dirac Semimetal

Recent experiments show that topological surface states (TSS) in topological insulators (TI) can be exploited to manipulate magnetic ordering in ferromagnets. In principle, TSS should also exist for other topological materials, but it remains unexplored as to whether such states can also be utilized to manipulate ferromagnets. In this paper, current-induced magnetization switching enabled by TSS in a non-TI topological material, namely, a topological Dirac semimetal α-Sn, is reported. The experiments use an α-Sn/Ag/CoFeB trilayer structure. The magnetization in the CoFeB layer can be switched by a charge current at room temperature, without an external magnetic field. The data show that the switching is driven by the TSS of the α-Sn layer, rather than spin-orbit coupling in the bulk of the α-Sn layer or current-produced heating. The switching efficiency is as high as in TI systems. This shows that the topological Dirac semimetal α-Sn is as promising as TI materials in terms of spintronic applications.

Large magnetoelectric resistance in the topological Dirac semimetal α-Sn

The spin-momentum locking of surface states in topological materials can produce a resistance that scales linearly with magnetic and electric fields. Such a bilinear magnetoelectric resistance (BMER) effect offers a new approach for information reading and field sensing applications, but the effects demonstrated so far are too weak or for low temperatures. This article reports the first observation of BMER effects in topological Dirac semimetals; the BMER responses were measured at room temperature and were substantially stronger than those reported previously. The experiments used topological Dirac semimetal α-Sn thin films grown on silicon substrates. The films showed BMER responses that are 10 6 times larger than previously measured at room temperature and are also larger than those previously obtained at low temperatures. These results represent a major advance toward realistic BMER applications. Significantly, the data also yield the first characterization of three-dimensional Fermi-level spin texture of topological surface states in α-Sn.

Electronic structure of the Si-containing topological Dirac semimetal CaAl 2 Si 2

There has been an upsurge in the discovery of topological quantum materials, where various topological insulators and semimetals have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. However, very few of them contain silicon, the most widely used element in the electronics industry. Recently, ternary compound CaA l 2 S i 2 has been predicted to be a topological Dirac semimetal, hosting Lorentz-symmetry-violating quasiparticles with a strongly tilted conical band dispersion. In this work, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the comprehensive electronic structure of CaA l 2 S i 2 . A pair of topological Dirac crossings is observed along the k z direction, in good agreement with the ab initio calculations, confirming the topological Dirac semimetal nature of the compound. Our study expands the topological material family on Si-containing compounds, which have great application potential in realizing low-cost, nontoxic electronic devices with topological quantum states.

Strong and fragile topological Dirac semimetals with higher-order Fermi arcs

Abstract Dirac and Weyl semimetals both exhibit arc-like surface states. However, whereas the surface Fermi arcs in Weyl semimetals are topological consequences of the Weyl points themselves, the surface Fermi arcs in Dirac semimetals are not directly related to the bulk Dirac points, raising the question of whether there exists a topological bulk-boundary correspondence for Dirac semimetals. In this work, we discover that strong and fragile topological Dirac semimetals exhibit one-dimensional (1D) higher-order hinge Fermi arcs (HOFAs) as universal, direct consequences of their bulk 3D Dirac points. To predict HOFAs coexisting with topological surface states in solid-state Dirac semimetals, we introduce and layer a spinful model of an s – d -hybridized quadrupole insulator (QI). We develop a rigorous nested Jackiw–Rebbi formulation of QIs and HOFA states. Employing ab initio calculations, we demonstrate HOFAs in both the room- ( α ) and intermediate-temperature ( α ″ ) phases of Cd 3 As 2 , KMgBi, and rutile-structure ( $$ \beta ^{\prime} $$ β ′ -) PtO 2 .

Topological Dirac Semimetal Phase in Bismuth Based Anode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Bismuth has recently attracted interest in connection with Na-ion battery anodes due to its high volumetric capacity. It reacts with Na to form Na 3 Bi which is a prototypical Dirac semimetal with a nontrivial electronic structure. Density-functional-theory based first-principles calculations are playing a key role in understanding the fascinating electronic structure of Na 3 Bi and other topological materials. In particular, the strongly-constrained-and-appropriately-normed (SCAN) meta-generalized-gradient-approximation (meta-GGA) has shown significant improvement over the widely used generalized-gradient-approximation (GGA) scheme in capturing energetic, structural, and electronic properties of many classes of materials. Here, we discuss the electronic structure of Na 3 Bi within the SCAN framework and show that the resulting Fermi velocities and s-band shift around the Γ point are in better agreement with experiments than the corresponding GGA predictions. SCAN yields a purely spin-orbit-coupling (SOC) driven Dirac semimetal state in Na 3 Bi in contrast with the earlier GGA results. Our analysis reveals the presence of a topological phase transition from the Dirac semimetal to a trivial band insulator phase in Na 3 Bi x Sb 1-x alloys as the strength of the SOC varies with Sb content, and gives insight into the role of the SOC in modulating conduction properties of Na 3 Bi.

Progress in Epitaxial Thin-Film Na 3 Bi as a Topological Electronic Material

Trisodium bismuthide (Na 3 Bi) is the first experimentally verified topological Dirac semimetal, and is a 3D analogue of graphene hosting relativistic Dirac fermions. Its unconventional momentum-energy relationship is interesting from a fundamental perspective, yielding exciting physical properties such as chiral charge carriers, the chiral anomaly, and weak anti-localization. It also shows promise for realizing topological electronic devices such as topological transistors. Herein, an overview of the substantial progress achieved in the last few years on Na 3 Bi is presented, with a focus on technologically relevant large-area thin films synthesized via molecular beam epitaxy. Key theoretical aspects underpinning the unique electronic properties of Na 3 Bi are introduced. Next, the growth process on different substrates is reviewed. Spectroscopic and microscopic features are illustrated, and an analysis of semiclassical and quantum transport phenomena in different doping regimes is provided. Furthermore, the emergent properties arising from confinement in two dimensions, including thickness-dependent and electric-field-driven topological phase transitions, are addressed, with an outlook toward current challenges and expected future progress.

Multigap nodeless superconductivity in the topological semimetal PdTe

Recently, PdTe was identified as a spin-orbit-coupled topological Dirac semimetal and was claimed to exhibit both bulk-nodal and surface-nodeless superconducting gaps. Here we report on ultra-low-temperature thermal-conductivity measurements on PdTe single crystals with T c = 4.5 K to investigate its superconducting gap structure. It is found that the residual linear term κ 0 /T is negligible in zero magnetic field. Furthermore, the field dependence of κ 0 ⁡(H)/T exhibits an S-shaped curve. These results suggest that PdTe has multiple nodeless superconducting gaps, which is at odds with the claimed bulk-nodal gap. The reason for the discrepancy is likely that previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements were only performed down to 2 K and cannot observe the smaller nodeless gap. As a result, the fully gapped superconducting state in PdTe is compatible with it being a topological superconductor candidate.

Dimensional crossover and band topology evolution in ultrathin semimetallic NiTe 2 films

Nickel ditelluride (NiTe 2 ), a recently discovered Type-II Dirac semimetal with topological Dirac fermions near the Fermi energy, is expected to exhibit strong thickness-mediated electronic tunability and intrinsic two-gap superconductivity in the single-layer limit. Realizing such intriguing phenomena requires the fabrication of ultrathin NiTe 2 films and an understanding of the underlying physics that is still under debate. By conducting experimental band mappings of ultrathin films prepared with molecular beam epitaxy, we reveal spectroscopic evidence for the dimensionality crossover of single-crystalline ultrathin NiTe 2 films as a function of film thickness. As the film thickness increases from one to five layers, the gap in the conical topological surface states closes. Comparisons of experimental to first-principles results also highlight difficulties in fabricating atomically smooth single-layer NiTe 2 films. Our results not only provide further impetus for studying emergent phenomena in NiTe 2 but also underscore the limitations of fabricating NiTe 2 films for device applications.

Single Photon Detection with On-Chip Number Resolving Capability

Single photon detection (SPD) plays an important role in many forefront areas of fundamental science and advanced engineering applications. In recent years, rapid developments in superconducting quantum computation, quantum key distribution, and quantum sensing call for SPD in the microwave frequency range. We have explored in this LDRD project a new approach to SPD in an effort to provide deterministic photon-number-resolving capability by using topological Josephson junction structures. In this SAND report, we will present results from our experimental studies of microwave response and theoretical simulations of microwave photon number resolving detector in topological Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 . These results are promising for SPD at the microwave frequencies using topological quantum materials.

Controlling and visualizing Dirac physics in topological semimetal heterostructures

A bulk crystal of cadmium arsenide is a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal, but, in a thin film, it can behave like a three-dimensional topological insulator. This tunability provides unique opportunities to manipulate and explore a topological insulator phase. However, an obstacle to engineering such tunability is the subtlety of transport-based discriminants for topological phases. In this work, the quantum capacitance of cadmium arsenide–based heterostructures provides two direct experimental signatures of three-dimensional topological insulator physics: an insulating three-dimensional bulk and a Landau level at zero energy that does not disperse in a magnetic field. We proceed to join our ability to see these fingerprints of the topological surface states with flexibility afforded by our epitaxial heterostructures to demonstrate a route toward controlling the energy of the Dirac nodes on each surface. These results point to new avenues for engineering topological insulators based on cadmium arsenide.

Observation of topological Dirac fermions and surface states in superconducting BaSn3

The interplay between topological electronic structure and superconductivity has attracted tremendous research interests recently as they could induce topological superconductivity (TSCs) which may be used to realize topological qubits for quantum computation. Among various TSC candidates, superconducting BaSn 3 (T c ~ 4.4K) has been predicted to be a topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) hosting two pairs of Dirac points along the Γ-A direction. Here, by combining the use of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, we identified the predicted topological Dirac fermions and confirmed the TDS nature of the compound. In addition, we observed surface states connecting the Dirac points. Our observations demonstrate BaSn 3 as a superconductor with nontrivial topological electronic structures.

Observation of dimension-crossover of a tunable 1D Dirac fermion in topological semimetal NbSi x Te 2

Condensed matter systems in low dimensions exhibit emergent physics that does not exist in three dimensions. When electrons are confined to one dimension (1D), some significant electronic states appear, such as charge density wave, spin-charge separations, and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) topological state. However, a clear understanding of how the 1D electronic properties connects with topology is currently lacking. Here we systematically investigated the characteristic 1D Dirac fermion electronic structure originated from the metallic NbTe 2 chains on the surface of the composition-tunable layered compound NbSi x Te 2 (x = 0.40 and 0.43) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We found the Dirac fermion forms a Dirac nodal line structure protected by the combined $\widetilde {M_y}$ and time-reversal symmetry T and proves the NbSi x Te2 system as a topological semimetal, in consistent with the ab-initio calculations. As x decreases, the interaction between adjacent NbTe 2 chains increases and Dirac fermion goes through a dimension-crossover from 1D to 2D, as evidenced by the variation of its Fermi surface and Fermi velocity across the Brillouin zone in consistence with a Dirac SSH model. Our findings demonstrate a tunable 1D Dirac electron system, which offers a versatile platform for the exploration of intriguing 1D physics and device applications.

Terahertz Nano-Imaging of Electronic Strip Heterogeneity in a Dirac Semimetal

Emerging topological semimetals offer promise of realizing topological electronics enabled by terahertz (THz) current persistent against impurity scattering. Yet most fundamental issues remain on how to image nanoscale conductivity inhomogeneity. Here in this paper we show noninvasive and contactless conductivity mapping at THz-nm limit of electronic heterogeneity and nanostrip junctions in a Dirac material ZrTe 5 . A clear Dirac Fermion density transition, manifested as the exclusive THz conductivity contrast, is quantitatively analyzed and profiled on both sides of the junction. This also allows the determination of variable junction width of ~25–220 nm, depending on the THz conductivity contrast of adjacent strips. The unique THz-nm contrast is absent in mid-infrared nano-imaging measurements since topological semimetals with small Fermi pockets exhibit a better matching of their plasma frequency and scattering rate to the THz spectral region. The first-principles calculations provide two compelling implications: the conductivity nanocontrast can be induced by a small anisotropic strain, even less than 0.5%, due to an extreme strain sensitivity in ZrTe 5 ; A nanoscale topological phase transition is realized across some junctions induced by the strain, between strong topological insulators (TIs) and weak TIs/Dirac semimetals (DSMs).

Supported by this DOE grant, we made significant advancements in the study and application of topological surface states (TSS) in topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) α-Sn thin films. Our key findings include: (1) the successful growth of TDS α-Sn thin films via sputtering, an industry-friendly technique, on Si and InSb substrates, marking a breakthrough over previous molecular beam epitaxy methods, (2) the demonstration of enhanced damping in adjacent NiFe thin films due to the TSS of α-Sn, (3) the first observation of a strong bilinear magneto-electric resistance (BMER) effect in TDS materials at room temperature, with responses surpassing previous results, (4) the identification of quantum oscillations in α-Sn thin films associated with the TSS, revealing critical quantum transport characteristics such as Berry phase and quantum mobility, (5) the first experimental observation of negative magnetoresistance in α-Sn, and (6) the demonstration of spinorbit torque-driven, field-free magnetization switching in an α-Sn/Ag/CoFeB trilayer, achieving efficiency levels higher than conventional heavy-metal-based structures, highlighting the essential role of TSS in enabling the switching process.
