Advanced Power Electronics and Electric Machines

The advanced power electronics and electric machines (APEEM) research group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has developed world-class experimental and modeling capabilities for designing and evaluating efficient and reliable power electronics and electric machines thermal management systems. They also design, fabricate and characterize advanced power electronics packaging, and are developing state-of-health monitoring techniques. These researchers deliver safe, reliable, high performing, power-dense components that allow seamless integration between renewable energy sources, electric transportation, and the grid, helping to make widespread electric vehicle (EV) adoption and greenhouse gas emissions reduction more feasible. This document outlines the group's major capabilities in the areas of power electronics; module development and characterization; thermal modeling and management; thermomechanical reliability analysis of devices, modules, inverters/converters, and electric machines; physics-of-failure-based reliability analysis; and microelectronics. It also overviews the group's state-of-the-art equipment for fluid-based thermal management; thermal measurement & characterization; thermomechanical reliability analysis; micro- and power electronics measurement & characterization; and prototype fabrication, as well as the group's world-class modeling and simulation capabilities.

Data on the noise vibrations of modern traction locomotives

A survey is presented of data on noise and vibration sources in modern locomotives and their influence on engine drivers. An attempt is made hierarchize noise and vibration sources in terms of importance and to correlate the noise level with the influence of noise on the engine drivers' organ of hearing. Some possible recommendations are outlined for reducing the level of these noxae in order to improve the acoustic comfort of engine drivers.

Axial force and efficiency tests of fixed center variable speed belt drive

An investigation of how the axial force varies with the centerline force at different speed ratios, speeds, and loads, and how the drive's transmission efficiency is affected by these related forces is described. The tests, intended to provide a preliminary performance and controls characterization for a variable speed belt drive continuously variable transmission (CVT), consisted of the design and construction of an experimental test rig geometrically similar to the CVT, and operation of that rig at selected speed ratios and power levels. Data are presented which show: how axial forces exerted on the driver and driven sheaves vary with the centerline force at constant values of speed ratio, speed, and output power; how the transmission efficiency varies with centerline force and how it is also a function of the V belt coefficient; and the axial forces on both sheaves as normalized functions of the traction coefficient.

A Low-Profile Gate Power Supply for a SiC Phase Leg with Reduced Isolation Capacitance

Gate driver power supply (GDPS) for SiC devices needs power to 5 W as the switching frequency increases to hundreds of kHz. Resonant converters with planar magnetics demand GDPS with a lower profile. Also, the isolation capacitance (Cp) needs to be minimized for SiC devices with high dv/dt. This paper proposed a planar 5 W*2, 20 V isolated gate power supply for a SiC phase leg in the EV traction inverter. Air-core magnetics with PCB windings are applied for low profile. A single-switch resonant Class-E topology is proposed with zero-voltage switching at 6.78 MHz to minimize the magnetics footprint for a 6 pF Cp. Compared with commercial power supplies with similar power, the proposed power supply reduced the profile and Cp by more than half without sacrificing its efficiency and power density.
