Coordinated Turn Trajectory Generation and Tracking Control for Multi-rotors Operating in Urban Environment

The paper presents an efficient trajectory generation and tracking approach for multi-rotor air vehicles operating in urban environment, which takes into account uncertainties in the urban wind field and in the vehicle's parameters. Generated trajectories are sufficiently smooth, based on the differential flatness of the vehicle's dynamics and optimal in the sense of minimum agility and time. They pass through given set of way points, guarantee flight without a side-slip, and satisfy vehicle's dynamics and actuator constraints. In addition, an algorithm is presented to compute the required power to traverse the generated trajectory. Presented algorithms are implementable in real time using on-board computers. They do not take into account the vehicle's existing flight controller, hence there is no guarantee that the controller will be able to provide acceptable tracking of the generated trajectory, especially in the presence of atmospheric disturbances. To this end, we propose an adaptive augmentation algorithm to improve vehicle's performance by taking into account the effects of disturbances and on-line estimates of vehicle's existing flight controller's gains. The algorithms have been verified by simulations using DJI S1000 octocopter's model.

Trajectory Generation for Distributed Electric Propulsion Vehicles with Propeller Synchronization

In this paper, we propose a method for generating dynamically feasible trajectories for an acoustically aware vehicle with propeller phase control. The trajectory generation procedure allows both propeller phase control and navigation objectives to be considered simultaneously. The presented method is demonstrated where the mission objectives are given as a desired position and phase trajectory. From these trajectories, the full desired state of the vehicle is calculated. Furthermore, the control inputs that realize the desired mission objectives are computed. The acoustic performance for the given trajectory is estimated in terms of sound pressure level as a function of tracking performance. The method is demonstrated in simulation, where the vehicle must navigate through an urban environment with both spatial and acoustic constraints. In the presented scenario, the vehicle must follow a given flight path, and can only reduce sound pressure level by changing the propeller phase targets.

An Algorithm for Trajectory Generation in Redundant Manipulators with Joint Transmission Accommodation

Trajectory generation for manipulators involves generating incremental updates of joint variables to achieve a desired end–effector motion. The Jacobian matrix maps incremental joint motion to incremental end–effector motion in a linear fashion and is typically used in manipulator trajectory generation algorithms. In the case of a redundant manipulator, the Jacobian matrix is not square or invertible and therefore algorithms based on pseudoinverses and their variations are commonly used for trajectory generation. These methods either are computationally not efficient or do not utilize all the joints in motion generation and therefore do not completely exploit the redundancy of the manipulator. The method presented in this paper is a simple method that maximizes transmission of all joint variables onto a desired end–effector motion trajectory. The method is based on aligning the null–space of an augmented Jacobian matrix with the path of the desired end–effector motion, from which a linear combination of joints that projects fully onto the desired end–effector trajectory is obtained. In this manner, all joints of the redundant manipulator are used to generate the end–effector trajectory accommodating the ability of each joint in terms of its motion transmission.

Optimum Three Impulse Trajectory Generator with Patched Conic Trajectory Model

Optimal multi-impulse trajectories were investigated as a nominal about which asymptotic expansion was used to obtain approximations of optimal low thrust trajectories. The work consisted of the analysis and description of an optimal 3-impulse trajectory program. A patched-conic trajectory model was specifically designed for compatibility with the subsequent addition of the low thrust expansion approximation.

Trajectory generation of space telerobots

The purpose is to review a variety of trajectory generation techniques which may be applied to space telerobots and to identify problems which need to be addressed in future telerobot motion control systems. As a starting point for the development of motion generation systems for space telerobots, the operation and limitations of traditional path-oriented trajectory generation approaches are discussed. This discussion leads to a description of more advanced techniques which have been demonstrated in research laboratories, and their potential applicability to space telerobots. Examples of this work include systems that incorporate sensory-interactive motion capability and optimal motion planning. Additional considerations which need to be addressed for motion control of a space telerobot are described, such as redundancy resolution and the description and generation of constrained and multi-armed cooperative motions. A task decomposition module for a hierarchical telerobot control system which will serve as a testbed for trajectory generation approaches which address these issues is also discussed briefly.

Optimal trajectory generation for mechanical arms

A general method of generating optimal trajectories between an initial and a final position of an n degree of freedom manipulator arm with nonlinear equations of motion is proposed. The method is based on the assumption that the time history of each of the coordinates can be expanded in a series of simple time functions. By searching over the coefficients of the terms in the expansion, trajectories which minimize the value of a given cost function can be obtained. The method has been applied to a planar three degree of freedom arm.

A trajectory generation and system characterization model for cislunar low-thrust spacecraft. Volume 2: Technical manual

The documentation of the Trajectory Generation and System Characterization Model for the Cislunar Low-Thrust Spacecraft is presented in Technical and User's Manuals. The system characteristics and trajectories of low thrust nuclear electric propulsion spacecraft can be generated through the use of multiple system technology models coupled with a high fidelity trajectory generation routine. The Earth to Moon trajectories utilize near Earth orbital plane alignment, midcourse control dependent upon the spacecraft's Jacobian constant, and capture to target orbit utilizing velocity matching algorithms. The trajectory generation is performed in a perturbed two-body equinoctial formulation and the restricted three-body formulation. A single control is determined by the user for the interactive midcourse portion of the trajectory. The full spacecraft system characteristics and trajectory are provided as output.

On trajectory generation for flexible space crane: Inverse dynamics analysis by LATDYN

For future in-space construction facility, one or more space cranes capable of manipulating and positioning large and massive spacecraft components will be needed. Inverse dynamics was extensively studied as a basis for trajectory generation and control of robot manipulators. The focus here is on trajectory generation in the gross-motion phase of space crane operation. Inverse dynamics of the flexible crane body is much more complex and intricate as compared with rigid robot link. To model and solve the space crane's inverse dynamics problem, LATDYN program which employs a three-dimensional finite element formulation for the multibody truss-type structures will be used. The formulation is oriented toward a joint dominated structure which is suitable for the proposed space crane concept. To track a planned trajectory, procedures will be developed to obtain the actuation profile and dynamics envelope which are pertinent to the design and performance requirements of the space crane concept.

Trajectory Generation for Noise-Constrained Autonomous Flight Operations

One of the major factors in acceptance of aircraft operating in urban areas is noise. In this work, we build on a framework for trajectory generation in order to account for limits on acousticmetrics at one ormore observer locations. The spatial trajectories are generated using Bézier polynomials and satisfy dynamic, acoustic, and mission constraints. The trajectories also guarantee spatial or temporal separation between vehicles for multi-vehicle operations. A simulation example is provided that demonstrates the reduction in noise levels at a set of measurement locations.

Trajectory Generation with Load Constraints for Robotic Manipulators

Future large spacecraft will utilize robotic manipulators for in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing. Due to launch mass constraints, such manipulators will be designed to be as lightweight as possible. Trajectory generation algorithms will need to factor in load constraints to avoid overexerting and damaging manipulators. This paper investigates an approach that combines optimal Rapidly-exploring Random Trees, spline interpolation, and Model Predictive Control to generate a manipulator trajectory which respects load constraints.

Comparison of Acoustic Models and Trajectory Generation Methods for an Acoustically-Aware Aircraft

This paper presents a comparison of trajectory generation methodologies using acoustic source noise models of different fidelity for motion planning for an acoustically-aware aircraft subject to constraints on the vehicle dynamic performance, mission, and acoustic footprint of the vehicle at a set of (three-dimensional) observer locations. The performance of a pre-mission Bézier curve-based planner and a (near) real-time stochastic model predictive control planner are compared. Additionally, a comparison is made between the motion planning performance using a lower-fidelity acoustic model based on propeller tip Mach number and omni-directional sound power radiation, and a hemisphere-based higher-fidelity acoustic model. It is demonstrated that the asymmetry in hemisphere-based acoustic model can be exploited for improved flight path planning and trajectory-tracking performance in the presence of acoustic constraints.

Trajectory Generation for Flexible-Joint Space Manipulators

Space manipulator arms often exhibit significant joint flexibility and limited motor torque. Future space missions, including satellite servicing and large structure assembly, may involve the manipulation of massive objects, which will accentuate these limitations. Currently, astronauts use visual feedback on-orbit to mitigate oscillations and trajectory following issues. Large time delays between orbit and Earth make ground teleoperation difficult in these conditions, so more autonomous operations must be considered to remove the astronaut resource requirement and expand robotic capabilities in space. Trajectory planning for autonomous systems must therefore be considered to prevent poor trajectory tracking performance. We provide a model-based trajectory generation methodology that incorporates constraints on joint speed, motor torque, and base actuation for flexible-joint space manipulators while minimizing total trajectory time. Full spatial computer simulation results, as well as physical experiment results with a single-joint robot on an air bearing table, show the efficacy of our methodology.

Spacecraft Formation Flying near Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange Point: Trajectory Generation and Adaptive Full-State Feedback Control

In this paper, we present a method for trajectory generation and adaptive full-state feedback control to facilitate spacecraft formation flying near the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point. Specifically, the dynamics of a spacecraft in the neighborhood of a Halo orbit reveals that there exist quasi-periodic orbits surrounding the Halo orbit. Thus, a spacecraft formation is created by placing a leader spacecraft on a desired Halo orbit and placing follower spacecraft on desired quasi-periodic orbits. To produce a formation maintenance controller, we first develop the nonlinear dynamics of a follower spacecraft relative to the leader spacecraft. We assume that the leader spacecraft is on a desired Halo orbit trajectory and the follower spacecraft is to track a desired quasi-periodic orbit surrounding the Halo orbit. Then, we design an adaptive, full-state feedback position tracking controller for the follower spacecraft providing an adaptive compensation for the unknown mass of the follower spacecraft. The proposed control law is simulated for the case of the leader and follower spacecraft pair and is shown to yield global, asymptotic convergence of the relative position tracking errors.

Attitude Reconstruction of Free-Flight CFD Generated Trajectories Using Non-Linear Pitch Damping Coefficient Curves

Attitude history reconstruction of Free-flight CFD generated trajectories with non-linear pitch damping coefficient curves is investigated. Free-flight CFD simulations of the capsule shape used for the Genesis sample return mission and the upcoming Dragonfly mission to Titan are conducted for 1-, 2-, and 3-degree-of-freedom cases. Two different data reduction methodologies are employed to derive a pitch damping curve as a function of instantaneous angle of attack. These curves are then used to reconstruct the attitude history of the body which is compared to the raw simulation results. While both data reduction methods produce pitch damping curves that can generally reconstruct the motion seen in the Free-flight simulations, it is found that optimization of the pitch damping curve using an inverse estimation process yields superior and more generalizable results. Further refinement of this technique could allow pitch damping curves derived using CFD to serve as a capability complementary to existing techniques for dynamic stability characterization.
