Quantum theory of an optical maser. VI - Transient behavior.

The transient behavior of a laser is discussed using the quantum theory as did Scully and Lamb. The formal solution of the density-matrix equation is expressed in terms of exponentially decaying eigenmodes. Some of the lower decay constants are obtained numerically. The equations for the moments of the density matrix are then derived and solved by a truncation method. The equations of motion are integrated numerically for the case where the average number of photons in a laser cavity has the realistically large value 1.3 x 100,000. An alternative Fokker-Planck-equation approach is discussed.

Transient behavior of flare-associated solar wind. II - Gas dynamics in a nonradial open field region

Transient behavior of flare-associated solar wind in the nonradial open field region is numerically investigated, taking into account the thermal and dynamical coupling between the chromosphere and the corona. A realistic steady solar wind is constructed which passes through the inner X-type critical point in the rapidly diverging region. The wind speed shows a local maximum at the middle, O-type, critical point. The wind's density and pressure distributions decrease abruptly in the rapidly diverging region of the flow tube. The transient behavior of the wind following flare energy deposition includes ascending and descending conduction fronts. Thermal instability occurs in the lower corona, and ascending material flows out through the throat after the flare energy input ceases. A local density distribution peak is generated at the shock front due to the pressure deficit just behind the shock front.

Study of transient behavior of finned coil heat exchangers

The status of research on the transient behavior of finned coil cross-flow heat exchangers using single phase fluids is reviewed. Applications with available analytical or numerical solutions are discussed. Investigation of water-to-air type cross-flow finned tube heat exchangers is examined through the use of simplified governing equations and an up-wind finite difference scheme. The degenerate case of zero air-side capacitance rate is compared with available exact solution. Generalization of the numerical model is discussed for application to multi-row multi-circuit heat exchangers.

Parameter Transient Behavior Analysis on Fault Tolerant Control System

In a fault tolerant control (FTC) system, a parameter varying FTC law is reconfigured based on fault parameters estimated by fault detection and isolation (FDI) modules. FDI modules require some time to detect fault occurrences in aero-vehicle dynamics. This paper illustrates analysis of a FTC system based on estimated fault parameter transient behavior which may include false fault detections during a short time interval. Using Lyapunov function analysis, the upper bound of an induced-L2 norm of the FTC system performance is calculated as a function of a fault detection time and the exponential decay rate of the Lyapunov function.

Transient behavior of a flare-associated solar wind. I - Gas dynamics in a radial open field region

A numerical investigation is conducted into the way in which a solar wind model initially satisfying both steady state and energy balance conditions is disturbed and deformed, under the assumption of heating that correspoonds to the energy release of solar flares of an importance value of approximately 1 which occur in radial open field regions. Flare-associated solar wind transient behavior is modeled for 1-8 solar radii. The coronal temperature around the heat source region rises, and a large thermal conductive flux flows inward to the chromosphere and outward to interplanetary space along field lines. The speed of the front of expanding chromospheric material generated by the impingement of the conduction front on the upper chromosphere exceeds the local sound velocity in a few minutes and eventually exceeds 100 million cm/sec.

The transient behavior of weldpools with a deformed free surface

Transient heat transfer, fluid flow and phase change in a weldpool with a deformed free surface are modeled using a two-dimensional coordinate transfornmation. The theoretical approach makes it possible to accurately model high Marangoni number flows even when the free surface is not horizontal. The method is used to examine the role of surface deformation and surface tension forces in controlling weld penetration during cathode spot welding of steel and aluminum. The calculated flow fields, temperature distributions and weldpool shapes are consistent with experimental findings, and are in reasonable agreement with previously published modeling efforts.

Analytical study of the liquid phase transient behavior of a high temperature heat pipe

The transient operation of the liquid phase of a high temperature heat pipe is studied. The study was conducted in support of advanced heat pipe applications that require reliable transport of high temperature drops and significant distances under a broad spectrum of operating conditions. The heat pipe configuration studied consists of a sealed cylindrical enclosure containing a capillary wick structure and sodium working fluid. The wick is an annular flow channel configuration formed between the enclosure interior wall and a concentric cylindrical tube of fine pore screen. The study approach is analytical through the solution of the governing equations. The energy equation is solved over the pipe wall and liquid region using the finite difference Peaceman-Rachford alternating direction implicit numerical method. The continuity and momentum equations are solved over the liquid region by the integral method. The energy equation and liquid dynamics equation are tightly coupled due to the phase change process at the liquid-vapor interface. A kinetic theory model is used to define the phase change process in terms of the temperature jump between the liquid-vapor surface and the bulk vapor. Extensive auxiliary relations, including sodium properties as functions of temperature, are used to close the analytical system. The solution procedure is implemented in a FORTRAN algorithm with some optimization features to take advantage of the IBM System/370 Model 3090 vectorization facility. The code was intended for coupling to a vapor phase algorithm so that the entire heat pipe problem could be solved. As a test of code capabilities, the vapor phase was approximated in a simple manner.

Transient behavior of supersonic flow through inlets

A solution technique to compute inlet flow behavior is presented. The phenomena of inlet unstart and restart are investigated using a flux-split procedure applied to the Euler and Reduced Navier Stokes (RNS) equations. A time consistent direct sparse matrix solver in conjunction with a domain decomposition strategy is applied to compute the transient flow behavior both internal and external to the inlet. Time varying shocks and time varying recirculation regions are efficiently analyzed. The code is quite general and is suitable for the computation of flow for a wide variety of geometries and over a wide range of Mach and Reynolds numbers.

The electrodynamic and hydrodynamic phenomena in magnetically-levitated molten droplets. II - Transient behavior and heat transfer considerations

Computed results are presented describing the transient evolution of the velocity and the temperature fields in a levitation-melted, electromagnetically-positioned metallic sample under microgravity, for conditions, when the heating current is switched off. Thus the calculations trace the evolution from one steady state corresponding to the simultaneous operation of both the heating and the positioning coils to that corresponding to the operation of the positioning coils only. The calculations have shown that the velocity field will decay much more rapidly than the temperature field, so that the cooling and subsequent undercooling and recalescence of the samples should take place from an essentially stagnant melt, meeting the original objectives of the experiment. The computed results for the velocity decay appear to agree with asymptotic calculations and also appear to follow the scaling laws.

Transient Behavior of Lumped-Constant Systems for Sensing Gas Pressures

The development of theoretical equations describing the behavior of a lumped-constant pressure-sensing system under transient operation Is presented with experimental data that show agreement with the equations. A pressure-sensing system 'consisting of a tube terminating in a reservoir is investigated for the transient relation between a presSure disturbance at the open end of the tube and the pressure response in the reservoir. Design parameters are presented that can be adjusted to achieve a desired performance fran such a system when the system is considered as a transfer member of a control loop.

Long-Term Variability and Transient Behavior of some Galactic Hard X-Ray Sources as Observed with BATSE

The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) experiment on the Compton Observatory has been providing continuous, all-sky monitoring of the hard X-ray sky for over seven years. A wide variety of transient and high-variability phenomena are observed for about sixty Galactic neutron star and black hole systems. A daily sensitivity level of approximately 75 mCrab is attained for sources observed by Earth occultation in un-crowded regions and approximately 20 mCrab for pulsars with known periods. This talk will qualitatively describe the types of variability that are observed from some of the brighter sources, including their duty-cycle and the various time-scales observed. Implications for the INTEGRAL mission will be discussed.
