PacWave Grid Integration Study: Transient and Dynamic Conditions (Final Report)

This report describes the results of PSCAD simulations that were performed in 2020 to assess the impacts of PacWave generation on CLPUD's 12.47-kV distribution and 69-kV subtransmission systems. PacWave South (PacWave) is a wave energy test facility planned by Oregon State University. PacWave shore facilities will be located south of Seal Rock on the Oregon coast. PacWave is expected to be operational in 2022 and will connect up to 10 MW of generation to CLPUD's Seal Rock distribution feeder.

Voltage Service Limits Smart Contract Using Distributed Ledger Technology for Electrical Utility Grid with Customer-Owned Generator

Modern electrical grids face growing stability risks from customer-owned generators, especially at points of common couplings (PCCs). Disruptive behavior from power-electronic sources can cause protective relays to isolate problematic generators, making measurement integrity critical. This article presents a distributed ledger technology (DLT) approach that uses smart contracts to evaluate PCC voltage measurements and trigger backup breaker operations. The approach is framed as a verifiable, multi-organization attestation and audit layer, not as a real-time control security mechanism. In the proposed architecture, voltage measurements from a hardware protective relay are anchored on a DLT through the Cyber Grid Guard (CGG) system for attestation by both the grid utility and customer-owned generator. A Voltage Service Limits (VSLs) smart contract evaluates the on-chain measurements against allowable phase-voltage limits derived from the ANSI C84.1 standard. The framework is validated in a hardware-relay-in-the-loop test bed under sustained-undervoltage, sustained-overvoltage, and transient line-to-line fault scenarios. The results show that the VSL smart contract can process these measurements and issue backup breaker actions consistent with the defined service-limit criteria, demonstrating the DLT potential as a verifiable audit layer at the PCC that complements primary protection.

Switching Modes for Reduction of Peak Voltage Transients in GaN-Based Three Level ANPC Inverter

The switching pole voltage can transition between P,0, and N states in a three-level active neutral point clamped (ANPC) inverter. State transitions between 0-P and 0-N can be realized with different switching modes. Three switching modes- Short 1 , Short 2 , and Full are studied considering the effect of capacitive current paths. The role of clamping and inner switch on/off conditions is determined using simplified equivalent circuit models. Short 2 with clamping switch off is beneficial for turn-on overvoltage suppression but results in high turn-off overvoltage. Full mode with a parallel current sharing path is effective for turn-off overvoltage suppression but leads to high turn-on overvoltage. Hence, a Modified Full mode is proposed to achieve the simultaneous objective of overvoltage suppression at both turn-on and turn-off transient during high load currents. This benefits 3L ANPC operation at a low power factor with a high load current at fundamental voltage zero crossing points. Here, a 650V GaN-based three-level ANPC inverter prototype is designed and used to evaluate the switching modes and overvoltage suppression strategies through double pulse tests and continuous operation.

T-Type Modular DC Circuit Breaker (T-Breaker) for Future DC Networks

The developed T-Type Modular DC Circuit Breaker (T-Breaker) technology offers an all-in-one solution to challenges in DC networks. This includes swift fault detection and protection, power transient stability, and power quality improvement, achieved through the utilization of wide bandgap (WBG) power semiconductors and energy storage devices. The T-Breaker not only facilitates rapid fault current detection and interruption but also implements fault current limiting through active insertion of storage devices or by operating WBG devices in the saturation region. Additionally, with the assistance of energy storage devices, potential overvoltage issues on power devices induced by control signal misalignment can be mitigated. The T-Breaker can be regulated to perform shunt current injection/absorption using the vertical arm and series voltage insertion via the horizontal arm, thereby enhancing DC system stability during voltage or load power fluctuation transients. The OSU team and Raytheon team actively worked together on designing, fabricating, assembling, and testing of two T-Breaker prototypes. The first prototype is rated at 1 kV, 500 A with half-bridge (unipolar) structure to validate the T-Breaker concept. The second prototype is rated at 20 kV, 50 A with full-bridge (bipolar) topology which can reach an efficiency of 99.977%, realize a power density of 60.2 MW/m3, and eliminate the 500-A fault current with a fault response time of around 20 µs. The prototypes show great feasibility of adopting this technology in multiple applications including electrified aircraft, super charging stations, data centers, etc.

Medium Voltage Converter Inductor Insulation Design Considering Grid Requirements

Medium voltage (MV) SiC devices facilitate direct (without 50-/60-Hz transformer) connection of the power electronics converter to the MV grid using simple topology. Compared to the insulation design of MV inductors that have been widely used in the power system, the insulation design of the MV converter filter inductors has new challenges. Particularly, the grid impact on insulation requirements on converter filter inductors is rarely discussed. This article introduces the insulation design of a grid-side filter inductor for a 13.8-kV power conditioning system converter. The grid insulation requirements, including the short-duration power frequency overvoltage and the lightning impulse voltage, are considered in the design. To meet the requirements, the layer-to-layer insulation, winding-to-core/ground insulation, the air gap discharge between the winding and the core, the local electric field, as well as the interturn transient voltage distribution are considered. Furthermore, the designed inductors are validated by the 46 kV (>1 min) dc hi-pot test, 12-kV ac partial discharge test, one-hour single-phase converter full rating test, as well as three-phase converter full rating test.
