Transition Metal Carbo-Chalcogenide “TMCC:” A New Family of 2D Materials

A new family of 2D transition metal carbo-chalcogenides (TMCCs) is reported, which can be considered a combination of two well-known families, TM carbides (MXenes) and TM dichalcogenides (TMDCs), at the atomic level. Single sheets are successfully obtained from multilayered Nb 2 S 2 C and Ta 2 S 2 C using electrochemical lithiation followed by sonication in water. The parent multilayered TMCCs are synthesized using a simple, scalable solid-state synthesis followed by a topochemical reaction. Superconductivity transition is observed at 7.55 K for Nb 2 S 2 C. The delaminated Nb 2 S 2 C outperforms both multilayered Nb 2 S 2 C and delaminated NbS 2 as an electrode material for Li-ion batteries. Ab initio calculations predict the elastic constant of TMCC to be over 50% higher than that of TMDC.

Thermochemistry of Layered and Two-Dimensional Niobium Carbo-Chalcogenides

Two-dimensional transition metal carbo-chalcogenides (TMCCs) represent a novel class of layered materials with tunable electronic structures and high chemical versatility, making them promising candidates for energy and environmental applications. In this work, the structural and thermochemical properties of a series of TMCCs are investigated. High-temperature oxidative solution calorimetry, conducted at 800 °C in molten sodium molybdate (3Na2O·4MoO3), was used to determine the enthalpies of oxidation and formation from the elements at 25 °C, enabling a comprehensive thermodynamic assessment. Comparison of these enthalpies reveals distinct stability trends across the series. Cu0.67Nb2S2C exhibits the most exothermic oxidation enthalpy, indicating a strong thermodynamic driving force for oxidation and reduced resistance to oxidative degradation. Its positive enthalpy of formation from the elements suggests lower thermodynamic stabilization relative to the other compositions, consistent with the energetic influence of Cu and residual Fe within the Nb–S–C framework. In contrast, delaminated Nb2S2C exhibits poor oxidative stability but a highly exothermic enthalpy of formation, consistent with a defect-rich, metastable structural state rather than enhanced lattice stability. These findings establish correlations between crystal structure and energetic stability, providing insights into the design of robust TMCC-based materials for advanced energy and environmental technologies.

Stability and Performance of 3d Transition Metal Carbo‐Sulfides: A Density Functional Theory Exploration for Li‐Ion Battery Anodes

As the demand for high-performance and reliable energy storage devices continues to rise, identifying new anode materials is crucial for advancing Li-ion battery (LIB) technology. Inspired by recent experimental breakthroughs in synthesizing two-dimensional transition metal carbo-chalcogenides (2D-TMCCs), density functional theory calculations are performed to systematically explore their sulfide variants (TM 2 S 2 C) spanning all 3d transition metals in three possible phases. Through comprehensive evaluations of thermodynamic, dynamic, mechanical, and thermal stabilities, seven stable 2D-TMCC candidates are identified, four of which exhibit superior battery performance. Notably, V-based 2D-TMCCs across all three phases deliver moderate open-circuit voltages (OCV), efficient Li diffusion, and substantial capacities, making them promising candidates for industrial applications without requiring specific phase controls. A Cr-based 2D-TMCC (with sulfur atoms above carbon atoms) offers the highest capacity of 515.40 mAh g −1 , the lowest Li diffusion barrier, and an optimal OCV, highlighting its appealing potential as an anode material for LIBs. Furthermore, significant Li–Li spacing and pronounced electron delocalization in these four 2D-TMCCs suggest a reduced risk of dendrite formation. This work expands the 2D-TMCC family and identifies up-and-coming candidates for next-generation LIB anodes.

Two-Dimensional Tantalum Carbo-Selenide for Hydrogen Evolution

Herein, we report the synthesis of two-dimensional Ta 2 Se 2 C (2D-Ta 2 Se 2 C) nanosheets using electrochemical lithiation in multilayer Ta 2 Se 2 C followed by sonication in deionized water. Multilayer Ta 2 Se 2 C was obtained via solid-state synthesis of Fe x Ta 2 Se 2 C followed by chemical etching of Fe. 2D-Ta 2 Se 2 C exhibited promising electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction from water compared to multilayer Ta 2 Se 2 C and 2D-TaSe 2 . 2D-Ta 2 Se 2 C showed an overpotential at 10 mA·cm -2 (η 10 ) of 264 mV, a Tafel slope of 91 mV·dec -1 , and an electrochemically active surface area of 17.61 m ECSA 2 ·g catalyst -1 . The high performance could be attributed to the large surface area of single sheets which hence maximizes the number of exposed catalytic sites and increased density of vacancies, observed with transmission electron microscopy, during synthesis and processing.
