Multiplicity dependence of transverse momentum in hadronic collisions

The process of secondary-particle emission in hadron-hadron collisions is analytically studied using a simple model of hadron structure. The model neglects the 'size' of the hadron constituents, considering a hadron as a continuous distribution of matter according to a step function of radius R. A version of the eikonal approximation is applied to derive the relative probability for interaction and emission of secondaries when the impact parameter b is smaller than 2R. On the basis of these assumptions, and using the uncertainty relation, an empirical parameterization is obtained for the dependence of the transverse momentum of charged secondaries on their multiplicity in the case of high-energy proton-proton collisions. Comparison with experimental data at 28 GeV/c yields agreement to within about 3%. The analysis shows that at a fixed beam momentum, the transverse momentum decreases with increasing multiplicity, and that for a given multiplicity, the transverse momentum exhibits a slow increase with beam momentum.

Transverse momentum distribution of pion deg in the fragmentation region of super high energy interactions

The lateral distribution of gamma-families observed by emulsion chamber is sensitive to test transverse momentum of high energy interaction. But most part gamma-families are succesive interation's results which makes it necessary to analyze the propagation of gamma-ray in atmosphere. A gamma-ray with energy Er and transverse momentum Pt is produced at the altitude h. In the emulsion chamber experiment, Eob is estimated by decascade method. There are 30 gamma-families observed by Ganbala emulsion Chamber. A group of Monte-Carlo simulation gamma-families are used to compare with experimental data with the same treatment. It is found that both distributions are consistent.

Transverse momentum dependent two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in Au + Au collisions at 11.6 A (center-dot) GeV/c

Bose-Einstein correlations of (pi)(sup +)(pi)(sup +) and (pi)(sup -) (pi)(sup -) pairs collected by the BNL-E866 Forward Spectrometer in 11.6 A(center-dot)GeV/c Au + Au collisions have been measured. The data were analyzed using three-dimensional correlation functions parameterized by the Yano-Koonin-Potgoretskii and Bertsch-Pratt formalism to study transverse momentum dependent source parameters. Rapid decreases of longitudinal source radii and slower decreases in the transverse parameters with increasing transverse momentum were observed, which suggests a strong longitudinal and some transverse expansion. A freeze-out time (tau)(sub 0) was derived as 4.5--5 fm/c, under the assumption of the freeze-out temperature T = 130 MeV, and the duration of emission was found to be (delta)(tau) (approx) 2--4 fm/c.

Variation of transverse momentum in hadronic collisions

The paper presents a detailed parameterization of the transverse momentum in hadronic collisions on multiplicity and on beam momentum. Hadronic collisions are considered at energies below the ultra-high energy domain, on the basis of an uncertainty relation and a naive eikonal model with an impact-parameter-dependent multiplicity.

Average transverse momentum and energy density in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions

Emulsion chambers were used to measure the transverse momenta of photons or pi(0) mesons produced in high-energy cosmic-ray nucleus-nucleus collisions. A group of events having large average transverse momenta has been found which apparently exceeds the expected limiting values. Analysis of the events at early interaction times, of the order of 1 fm/c, indicates that the observed transverse momentum increases with both rapidity density and energy density.

Widths of transverse momentum distributions in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions

The need to include dynamical collision momentum transfer contributions, arising from interacting nuclear and Coulomb fields, to estimates of fragment momentum distributions is discussed. Methods based upon an optical potential model are presented. Comparisons with recent experimental data of the Siegen group for variances of transverse momentum distributions for gold nuclei at 980 A MeV fragmenting on silver foil and plastic nuclear track detector targets are made. The agreement between theory and experiment is good.

Universal characteristics of transverse momentum transfer in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions

A microscopic optical model formalism for estimating momentum transfer in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions predicts universal behavior of the transverse component. In particular, for symmetric systems heavier than niobium, it appears that values of P(perpendicular)/A are independent of the mass and charge of the colliding nuclei and vary only with impact parameter and incident beam energy. This suggests that momentum transfer per nucleon saturates to some limiting value with increasing mass.

Inclusive dielectron cross sections in p + p and p + d interactions at beam energies from 1.04 to 4.88 GeV

Measurements of dielectron production in p + p and p + d collisions with beamkinetic energies from 1.04 to 4.88 GeV are presented. The differential cross section is presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the mass spectra and their evolution with beam energy provide information about the relative importance of the various dielectron production mechanisms in this energy regime. The p + d to p + p ratio of the dielectron yield is also presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the transverse momentum and rapidity spectra from the p + d and p + p systems are found to be similar to one another for each of the beam energies studied. The beam energy dependence of the integrated cross sections is also presented.

The nucleon intensity in the atmosphere and the Pt distribution

The diffusion equation for cosmic ray nucleons in the atmosphere has been solved analytically, taking into account the transverse momentum distribution of nucleons produced in nucleon-air nucleus collisions. The effect of the transverse momentum distribution increases the nucleon intensity at large zenith angles and low energies.

Production of H-3 at large momentum in alpha-(C-12) collisions at 2A GeV

Calculations of the longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions for H-3 production at large momentum in alpha-(C-12) collisions near 2A GeV are compared to experiment. Triton exchange and final-state interactions are shown to represent large corrections to the impulse approximation for proton knockout. A method for calculating interference effects for inelastic fragmentation is discussed. Good agreement with experiment using a phenomenological overlap function for (H-3)-p is found successful in describing H-3 production in pion-induced reactions. Comparisons to momentum distributions obtained through (p, 2p) and (e, ep) reactions on He-4 are made.

A viscous-inviscid interaction algorithm for three-dimensional turbulent subsonic aerodynamic juncture region flow

An order-of magnitude analysis of the subsonic, three-dimensional, steady time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for semibounded aerodynamic juncture geometries yields the parabolic Navier-Stokes simplification. The numerical solution of the resultant pressure Poisson equation is cast into complementary and particular parts, yielding an iterative interaction algorithm with an exterior three-dimensional potential flow solution. A parabolic transverse momentum equation set is constructed, wherein robust enforcement first-order continuity effects is accomplished using a penalty differential constraint concept within a finite element solution algorithm. A Reynolds stress constitutive equation, with low turbulence Reynolds number wall functions, is employed for closure, using parabolic forms of the two-equation turbulent kinetic energy-dissipation equation system. The algorithm is employed to predict the three-dimensional turbulent flowfield in the juncture region formed by two intersecting parabolic arcs at a free-stream Mach-number of 0.08, and Re/C = 600,000/m.

The numerical solution of the resultant pressure Poisson equation is cast into complementary and particular parts, yielding an iterative interaction algorithm with an exterior three dimensional potential flow solution. A Reynolds stress constitutive equation, with low turbulence Reynolds number wall functions, is employed for closure, using parabolic forms of the two-equation turbulent kinetic energy-dissipation equation system. Numerical results document accuracy, convergence, and utility of the developed finite element algorithm, and the CMC:3DPNS computer code applied to an idealized wing-body juncture region. Additional results document accuracy aspects of the algorithm turbulence closure model.

Extremely high multiplicities in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions

Two unusually-high-multiplicity interactions of high-energy heavy nuclei were observed in a balloon-borne emulsion chamber: an Si(+)AgBr event (4 TeV/nucleon) and a Ca(+)C event (100 TeV/nucleon), with 1015 and 760 charged particles, respectively. The multiplicities and rapidity distributions favor the multichain model but not the wounded-nucleon superposition model. The high average transverse momentum (550-700 MeV/c) and the rapid fluctuations of the events are not readily understood in terms of any superposition models.

QCD-motivated description of very high energy particle interactions

Cross sections for the production of secondaries with large transverse momentum can become comparable to the total cross section in the TeV energy range. It is argued that the onset of this effect is observed at sub TeV energies via an increase of the rapidity distribution near y = 0, an increase of p sub T with energy and, most directly, via a correlation between p sub T and multiplicity. If indeed scaling violations are associated with the hard scattering of partons, then scaling violations are largely confined to the central region and have little effect on cosmic ray data which are sensitive to the forward fragmentation region.
