Neural-network extraction of unpolarised transverse-momentum-dependent distributions

We present the first extraction of transverse-momentum-dependent distributions of unpolarized quarks from experimental Drell-Yan data using neural networks to parametrize their nonperturbative part. We show that neural networks outperform traditional parametrizations providing a more accurate description of data. This Letter establishes the feasibility of using neural networks to explore the multidimensional partonic structure of hadrons and paves the way for more accurate determinations based on machine-learning techniques.

Tomography of pions and protons via transverse momentum dependent distributions

We perform the first simultaneous extraction of parton collinear and transverse degrees of freedom from low-energy fixed-target Drell-Yan data in order to compare the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the pion and proton. We demonstrate that the transverse separation of the quark field encoded in TMDs of the pion is more than 4⁢𝜎 smaller than that of the proton. Additionally, we find the transverse separation of the quark field decreases as its longitudinal momentum fraction decreases. In studying the nuclear modification of TMDs, we find clear evidence for a transverse EMC effect. We comment on possible explanations for these intriguing behaviors, which call for a deeper examination of tomography in a variety of strongly interacting quark-gluon systems.

Efficient Fourier transforms for transverse momentum dependent distributions

Hadron production at low transverse momenta in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering can be described by transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization. This formalism has also been widely used to study the Drell-Yan process and back-to-back hadron pair production in $e^+e^-$ collisions. These processes are the main ones for extractions of TMD parton distribution functions and TMD fragmentation functions, which encode important information about nucleon structure and hadronization. One of the most widely used TMD factorization formalism in phenomenology formulates TMD observables in coordinate $b_\perp$-space, the conjugate space of the transverse momentum. The Fourier transform from $b_\perp$-space back into transverse momentum space is sufficiently complicated due to oscillatory integrands that it requires a careful and computationally intensive numerical treatment in order to avoid potentially large numerical errors. Within the TMD formalism, the azimuthal angular dependence is analytically integrated and the two-dimensional $b_\perp$ integration reduces to a one-dimensional integration over the magnitude $b_\perp$. In this paper we develop a fast numerical Hankel transform algorithm for such a $b_\perp$-integration that improves the numerical accuracy of TMD calculations in all standard processes. Libraries for this algorithm are implemented in Python 2.7 and 3, C++, as well as FORTRAN77. All packages are made available open source.

Simultaneous reweighting of Transverse Momentum Dependent distributions

The Bayesian reweighting procedure is extended to the case of multiple independent extractions of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). By exploiting the data on transverse single spin asymmetries, A N , for inclusive pion production in polarized proton-proton collisions measured at RHIC, we perform a simultaneous reweighting of the quark Sivers, transversity and Collins TMD functions extracted from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and annihilation into hadron pairs. The impact of the implementation of the Soffer bound, as well as the differences between older and newer e + e - data, are investigated. The agreement with A N data at large-x F values, a kinematical region complementary to those explored in SIDIS measurements, is enhanced, improving the knowledge of the polarized quark TMDs in the large-x region.

Gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distributions from large-momentum effective theory

We demonstrate that gluon transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) can be extracted from lattice calculations of appropriate Euclidean correlations in large-momentum effective theory (LaMET). Based on perturbative calculations of gluon unpolarized and helicity TMDPDFs, we present a matching formula connecting them and their LaMET counterparts, where the latter are renormalized in a scheme facilitating lattice calculations and converted to the $\overline{MS}$ scheme. The hard matching kernel is given up to one-loop level. We also show that the perturbative result is independent of the prescription used for the pinch-pole singularity in the relevant correlations. Our results offer a guidance for the extraction of gluon TMDPDFs from lattice simulations, and have the potential to greatly facilitate perturbative calculations of the hard matching kernel.

Tomography of pions and kaons in the QCD vacuum: Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions

We evaluate the pion and kaon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions in the instanton liquid model, a model of the QCD vacuum at low resolution. The relevant transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) are factored into a constituent quark distribution times a rapidity dependent soft factor from staple-shaped Wilson lines, for fixed parton longitudinal momentum and transverse separation. The results are evolved to higher rapidities using the Collins-Soper kernel and higher resolution using renormalization group evolution. The comparison to existing extractions of pion TMDs from Drell-Yan data is briefly discussed.

Tomography of the rho meson in the QCD instanton vacuum: Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions

We analyze the rho meson unpolarized and polarized transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) in the instanton liquid model (ILM). The corresponding TMDs in ILM are approximated by a constituent quark beam function in the leading Fock state multiplied by a rapidity-dependent factor resulting from the staple-shaped Wilson lines, for fixed longitudinal momentum, transverse separation, and rapidity. At the resolution of the ILM, all of the rho meson TMDs are symmetric in parton 𝑥 for fixed transverse momentum, and Gaussian-like in the transverse momentum for fixed parton 𝑥. The latter is a direct consequence of the profiling of the quark zero modes in the ILM. The evolved TMDs at higher rapidity using the Collins-Soper kernel, and higher resolution using the renormalization group, show substantial skewness towards low parton 𝑥.

Consistency of the pion form factor and unpolarized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions beyond leading twist in the light-front quark model

We investigate the interplay among the pion’s form factor, transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs), and parton distribution functions (PDFs) extending our light-front quark model (LFQM) computation based on the Bakamjian-Thomas construction for the two-point function [1,2] to the three-point and four-point functions. Ensuring the four-momentum conservation at the meson-quark vertex from the Bakamjian-Thomas construction, the meson mass is taken consistently as the corresponding invariant meson mass both in the matrix element and the Lorentz factor in our LFQM computation. We achieve the current-component independence in the physical observables such as the pion form factor and delve into the derivation of unpolarized TMDs and PDFs associated with the forward matrix element. We address the challenges posed by twist-4 TMDs and exhibit the fulfillment of the sum rule. Effectively, our LFQM successfully handles the light-front zero modes and offers insights for broader three-point and four-point functions and related observables.

Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions up to N 3 LL from Drell-Yan data

We present an extraction of unpolarised Transverse-Momentum-Dependent Parton Distribution Functions (TMD PDFs or TMDs) based on Drell-Yan production data from different experiments, including those at the LHC, and spanning a wide kinematic range. We include resummation of leading logarithms up to N 3 LL accuracy. The high per- turbative accuracy and the inclusion of non-perturbative contributions, along with a sound treatment of the experimental uncertainties, allow us to obtain a remarkable agreement with the data. We show that higher-order perturbative corrections are in fact crucial to achieve a suitable description of the data. In addition, we show that the precise rapidity- differential cross sections measured by the ATLAS experiment at 7 and 8 TeV provide a marked sensitivity to the x dependence of TMDs.

Unveiling the sea: universality of the transverse momentum dependent quark distributions at small x

Within the Colour Glass Condensate effective theory, we demonstrate that back-to-back dijet correlations in dilute-dense collisions involving a small-quark from the nuclear target can be factorised in terms of universal transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs) for the sea quarks. Two building blocks are needed to construct all these TMDs at the operator level: the sea quark TMD operator which appears in semi-inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) or in the Drell-Yan process and the elastic-matrix for a quark-antiquark dipole. Compared to SIDIS, the saturation effects are stronger for dijet production in forward proton-nucleus collisions, due to additional scattering in the initial and final state, effectively resulting in a larger value for the nuclear saturation momentum.

Unpolarized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions of the nucleon from lattice QCD

We present a first lattice QCD calculation of the unpolarized nucleon’s isovector transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs), which are essential to predict observables of multiscale, semi-inclusive processes in the standard model. We use a N f = 2 + 1 + 1 MILC ensemble with valence clover fermions on a highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) sea to compute the quark momentum distributions in a large-momentum nucleon on the lattice. The state-of-the-art techniques in renormalization and extrapolation in the correlation distance on the lattice are adopted. The perturbative kernel up to next-to-next-to-leading order is taken into account, and the dependence on the pion mass and the hadron momentum is explored. Our results are qualitatively comparable with phenomenological TMDPDFs, which provide an opportunity to predict high energy scatterings from first principles. Factorized approach to radiative corrections for inelastic lepton-hadron collisions [Slides]

We propose a new factorized approach to QED radiative corrections (RCs) in inclusive and semi-inclusive lepton-hadron deep-inelastic scattering. The method allows the systematic resummation of the logarithmically enhanced into factorized lepton distribution and fragmentation (or jet) functions that are universal for all final states. The new approach provides a uniform treatment of RCs for the extraction of parton distribution functions, transverse momentum dependent distributions, and other partonic correlation functions from lepton-hadron collision data.

The quantum evolutions of the diffractive transverse-momentum dependent gluon distribution

Using the Colour Glass Condensate description of electron-nucleus collisions at high energy, we study the diffractive production of a pair of jets with transverse momenta much larger than the nuclear saturation momentum Q s . At leading order in the QCD coupling, the di-jet cross-section exhibits transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) factorisation, with a gluon diffractive TMD distribution (DTMD) which is controlled by gluon saturation and describes the transverse-momentum imbalance between the produced jets. The next-to-leading corrections generate the various quantum evolutions of the diffractive gluon distribution. We focus on the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) evolution which describes the change in the gluon DTMD when increasing the “hard scale” (the typical transverse momentum of the di-jets). We consider two different representations for this equation, one in transverse-momentum space, the other one in transverse-coordinate space. They are not fully equivalent with each other (despite being related by a Fourier transform) because of the respective boundary conditions. These conditions encode the essential physics of gluon saturation together with the effects of two other types of quantum evolution: the BK/JIMWLK evolution over the rapidity gap (“inside the Pomeron”) and the DGLAP evolution outside the rapidity gap (“within the diffractive system”). We demonstrate that, due to gluon saturation, one can compute both the boundary conditions and the CSS solutions mostly from first principles, without the need for a non-perturbative Sudakov. We numerically find a good agreement between the CSS solutions in the two aforementioned representations.

Exploring the 3D nucleon structure with CLAS and CLAS12 at JLAB

Exploring the 3 dimensional structure of the nucleon can help to understand several fundamental questions of nature, such as the origin of the nucleon spin and the charge and density distributions inside the nucleon. In QCD, the 3-dimensional structure of the nucleon is described by Wigner functions. However, experimentally momentum and coordinate space have to be assessed independently. The momentum distribution can be accessed by transverse momentum dependent distribution functions (TMDs) measured in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) or Drell-Yan processes while the distribution in transverse coordinate and longitudinal momentum space is described by generalized parton distributions (GPDs) which can be accessed for example by deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) and hard exclusive meson production (DVMP). Based on the high quality data of CLAS and the recently upgraded CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Laboratory (JLAB), a detailed study of these distribution functions is being performed. With the new CLAS12 data, multidimensional, high precision studies in an extended kinematic range become possible for the first time. The talk will present the results of recent SIDIS, DVCS and DVMP studies with CLAS and CLAS12 and their impact on the understanding of the 3D nucleon structure.

Future Studies of Dihadron Production in SIDIS

Spin asymmetry and cross section measurements in semi-inclusive hadroproduction grant access to a variety of parton distribution and fragmentation functions. Such measurements of dihadron production additionally constrain Dihadron Fragmentation Functions (DiFFs), and the extra degree of freedom from the second hadron facilitates access to some of the parton distribution functions. At CLAS kinematics, subleading-twist parton distributions are accessible in dihadron beam-spin and target-spin asymmetries, and a comparison of semi-inclusive scattering off a proton and a deuteron probes their flavor dependence. The future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) with a transversely polarized proton will access several transverse-momentum dependent distributions such as Sivers and transversity. On the fragmentation side, numerous DiFFs are accessible, and their partial wave expansion probes correlations between the angular momentum of the fragmenting parton with that of the observed dihadron. Furthermore, different hadron channels probe flavor dependence in fragmentation. Together with CLAS, the EIC as well as CLAS with the proposed 22 GeV accelerator upgrade will cover a broad range of $Q^2$ and $x$, allowing for the study of evolution effects of all of these functions. This presentation will summarize the possibilities of these measurements at CLAS and at future experimental facilities.

Transverse Momentum Distributions from Lattice QCD without Wilson Lines

The transverse-momentum-dependent distributions (TMDs), which are defined by gauge-invariant 3D parton correlators with staple-shaped lightlike Wilson lines, can be calculated from quark and gluon correlators fixed in the Coulomb gauge on a Euclidean lattice. These quantities can be expressed gauge invariantly as the correlators of Coulomb-gauge-dressed fields, which reduce to the standard TMD correlators under principal-value prescription in the infinite boost limit. In the framework of large-momentum effective theory, a quasi-TMD defined from such correlators in a large-momentum hadron state can be matched to the TMD via a factorization formula, whose exact form is derived using soft collinear effective theory and verified at one-loop order. Compared to the currently used gauge-invariant correlators, this new method can substantially improve statistical precision and simplify renormalization for the time-reversal-even TMDs, which will greatly enhance the predicative power of lattice QCD in the nonperturbative region.
