Travel Patterns and Characteristics of Millennial Population in New York State

This study investigates the travel behaviors, demographics, and transportation preferences of millennials (born 1981–1996), a generation that significantly influences urban living and mobility trends. Using data from the National Household Travel Survey (2009, 2017, and 2022) and other sources, this study examines key factors such as trip rates, trip length, travel modes, trip purposes, and travel time while also analyzing the effects of transportation technologies and COVID-19 on millennials’ travel behaviors in New York State (NYS). Additionally, travel patterns of millennials are compared with those of younger (i.e., Gen Z) and older (i.e., Gen X and baby boomer) generations across different geographical regions in NYS (e.g., New York City).

The 1990 San Francisco Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission Household Survey

The San Francisco Bay Area's Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the regional transportation planning agency for the nine-county Bay Area conducted the survey. The basic purpose for the survey was for the development of travel demand models to simulate the various components of travel behavior: auto ownership, trip frequency (trip generation), and the distribution of trips between origins and destinations by travel mode. Planners at MTC envisioned the 1990 survey as the first wave of a multi-wave household panel survey designed to capture both short- and long-term changes in regional travel behavior. The 1990 survey collected single-weekday travel data from nearly 9,900 Bay Area households and multiple-weekday travel data from nearly 1,500 households. The 1990 survey effort also included a separate sub-project, funded by the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) District, to collect multiple-weekday travel data from 1,000 BART-using households. The BART survey and the MTC multiple-weekday survey were completed in the spring of 1990; the MTC single-weekday survey was continued and completed during the autumn of 1990.

2011 Seattle Tolling Impact Survey

The 2011 Tolling Impact Survey measured the impact of tolling on travel behavior in Seattle, Washington. The Volpe Center conducted the survey on behalf of the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Urban Partnership Agreement. The population surveyed included drivers, public transportation users, carpoolers, and vanpoolers using the SR-520 corridor in Seattle. The survey was conducted in two phases—before and after toll implementation—to evaluate related attitude changes. The survey assessed route changes, trip timing, trip purpose, and travel mode (i.e., single-occupancy vehicle, carpool, or public transportation).

The Volpe Center conducted the survey on behalf of the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Urban Partnership Agreement. The population surveyed included drivers, public transportation users, carpoolers, and vanpoolers using the I-85 corridor in Atlanta, Georgia. The survey was conducted in two phases—before and after toll implementation—to evaluate related attitude changes. The survey assessed route changes, trip timing, trip purpose, and travel mode (i.e., single-occupancy vehicle, carpool, or public transportation).

1990 CATS Household Travel Survey

The Chicago Area Transportation Study (CATS) 1990 Household Travel Survey was a self-administered mail-out mail-back survey. The purpose of the study was to update existing data on travel patterns and characteristics of Chicago residents. CATS surveyed the region on a county-by-county basis with the Chicago Central Business District in collaboration with the Urban Transportation Center of the University of Illinois. The study gathered demographic and travel behavior data from residents of northeastern Illinois who were 14 years old or older. 19,314 households participated in the survey. The study focused on non-work travel by motorized vehicle and by foot, and residents recorded their trips on a single travel day. Transportation-related variables include trip origin and destination, trip purpose, travel time, mode of travel used, vehicle occupancy, and walking distance (if that transit mode was involved).

Travel Patterns and Characteristics of the Population from Zero Vehicle Households in New York State

This study explores how zero vehicle and vehicle deficit (i.e., fewer cars than licensed drivers) households manage their daily travel needs and overall mobility decisions. Using the 2009, 2017, and 2022 National Household Travel Survey, the research team investigates key patterns such as trip rates, trip distances, travel modes, and trip purposes, as well as evaluates the impact of information and communication technologies like online shopping and telework. Additionally, the team evaluates how the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced travel behavior, with a focus on New York State, where a significant number of zero vehicle and vehicle deficit households offer unique perspectives on the challenges and opportunities associated with limited vehicle access.

Integrating the Mobility Energy Productivity Metric Into the Delaware Department of Transportation Statewide Model

The Mobility Energy Productivity (MEP) metric quantifies the quality of mobility at a given location and evaluates how changes in the transportation system impact mobility over time, such as through infrastructure investments. This study demonstrates the integration of the MEP metric into the Delaware Department of Transportation's (DelDOT's) transportation planning process by utilizing data from its statewide travel demand model. Specifically, the study assesses MEP for the 2020 baseline conditions and three alternative scenarios - 2030, Churchman, and Old Orchard - across multiple travel modes, including driving, walking, biking, and transit. The findings highlight that mobility and accessibility in Delaware are primarily supported by the driving mode, while transit services remain relatively limited, often ranking below biking and walking in many areas. In the 2030 scenario, where network operations and opportunities expand as projected, overall statewide accessibility declines, although Kent and Sussex counties experience improvements. The results from the Churchman and Old Orchard scenarios indicate that local network enhancements can positively influence accessibility, though primarily at a localized level, demonstrating MEP's capability to capture regional accessibility changes. Further, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory team successfully transferred MEP operational knowledge to the DelDOT team through dockerization, enabling DelDOT to independently run MEP for various scenarios of interest. Integrating MEP into DelDOT's planning framework supports future project evaluations and decision-making by incorporating access to opportunities as a key dimension of transportation system assessment.

BAMBAM (The Behavior and Advanced Mobility Big Access Model) [SWR-25-123]

Access modeling toolkit for Rust built on the RouteE Compass energy-aware route planner. The Behavior and Advanced Mobility Big Access Model (BAMBAM) is a mobility research platform for scalable access modeling. The process begins with a grid defined at some spatial granularity (e.g., census block or 1 km grid) and a variety of travel configurations. For each grid cell and configuration, the platform executes constrained searches, uses the results to index points of interest (POI), and aggregates the findings to the grid level. It provides researchers access through R or Python running on HPC. The platform automates the import and merging of datasets from a variety of sources including data.gov (with automatic merging of Tiger/Lines geometries), OpenStreetMaps, OvertureMaps, and GTFS. It is built upon RouteE Compass, a scalable, energy-aware route planner written in Rust, extended to model multiple travel modes.
