High-temperature deformation and microstructural analysis for Si3N4-Sc2O3

It was indicated that Si3N4 doped with Sc2O3 may exhibit high temperature mechanical properties superior to Si3N4 systems with various other oxide sintered additives. High temperature deformation of samples was studied by characterizing the microstructures before and after deformation. It was found that elements of the additive, such as Sc and O, exist in small amounts at very thin grain boundary layers and most of them stay in secondary phases at triple and multiple grain boundary junctions. These secondary phases are devitrified as crystalline Sc2Si2O7. Deformation of the samples was dominated by cavitational processes rather than movements of dislocations. Thus the excellent deformation resistance of the samples at high temperature can be attributed to the very small thickness of the grain boundary layers and the crystalline secondary phase.

Strength and microstructure of Si3N4 sintered with ZrO2 additions

Densities greater than 99 percent of theoretical were obtained with stabilized ZrO2 additions to Si3N4. Material sintered at 2140 C under 2.5 MPa nitrogen overpressure with 3.8, 9.9, and 13.4 wt pct ZrO2 had a predominantaly equiaxed grain size ranging from 0.2 to 7.0 microns. At 1370 C, the latter composition exhibited a flexural strength of about 487 MPa, equal to that of a finer-grain-size, hot-pressed Si3N4 + ZrO2 material having excellent high-temperature static fatigue properties. Transmission electron microscopy of the sintered Si3N4 revealed a glassy grain-boundary phase at all three ZrO2 levels and partially crystalline triple points for the 9.9 and 13.4 wt pct ZrO2-containing materials. Slow crack growth was observed for 1370 C flexure tests and correlated with nonlinear load deflection traces for stresses greater than 503 MPa. The crystallization of the grain-boundary glass is insterpreted as beneficial to the attainment of high (1370 C) flexural strength.

Phase relationships in Fe-Ni alloys at high pressures and temperatures

Diffusionless phase transformations in Fe-Ni alloys with up to 35 wt pct Ni were studied using resistance-heated diamond anvil cells and synchrotron radiation. At temperatures up to 600 C and pressures up to 25 GPa, Fe-35 percent Ni showed only the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase while Fe-25 percent Ni and Fe-10 percent Ni showed the body-centered cubic (bcc) and hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phases in addition to the fcc phase. The phase relationships of these solid phases are topologically similar to those of pure iron. The triple point becomes lower in temperature, and the slope (dT/dP) of the fcc/hcp boundary decreased as Ni-content increases in the alloys. From these results it is inferred that Fe-Ni alloys in the earth's inner core might exist as two phases, fcc and hcp. The existence of these two phases could have played an important role in the separation of the inner and outer core.

Nonlinear development and secondary instability of large-amplitude Goertler vortices in hypersonic boundary layers

The weakly nonlinear development of large-amplitude Goertler vortices in a small neighborhood of the neutral stability position given by the linear theory is considered. It is shown that if the basic state and the wall curvature satisfy a certain condition, the Goertler vortices will grow until they become so large as to drive a mean flow correction as large as the basic state. Attention is then given to the further downstream evolution of these large-amplitude vortices, and it is shown that the vortices have a triple layer structure which consists of a region of vortex activity bounded by two transition layers over which the amplitude of the harmonic part of the vortex decays to zero exponentially. The positions of the two transition layers are found to be governed by a free boundary problem, which is solved for a number of curvature distribution cases. The secondary instability of the two transition layers is investigated with respect to traveling waves which are pi/2 out of phase in the spanwise direction with the steady Goertler vortices.

Olivine flotation and settling experiments on the join Mg2SiO4-Fe2SiO4

Results are presented of a study of some unusual density relations between olivine and coexisting liquid in the system fosterite-fayalite. At 1 atmosphere pressure it is found that olivine floats on its coexisting liquid for intermediate compositions on this binary because of extreme partitioning of Fe into the melt phase. At 20 kilobars, the usual behavior of olivine settling is found to occur because the partitioning of Fe in the melt is reduced, aided possibly by the dissolution of CO2 in the melt from the use of a graphite container. It is determined that olivine flotation and settling are rapid in a time period of only a few hours because viscosities are slightly greater than that of paraffin oil at room temperature. Some adcumulate textures with good triple junction grain boundaries are found to be developed. Observations of differentiated magmatic systems suggest that the mechanisms by which magmas can differentiate vary considerably in the ultramafic to tholeiitic compositional range.
