Outlook for active plasma spectroscopy with entangled two-photon absorption

Entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA) exhibits a quantum-enhanced two-photon absorption cross-section and a linear scaling with incident power that exceeds classical two-photon absorption (TPA) at low photon flux. Here, we assess the feasibility and applications of ETPA for active plasma spectroscopy. The ETPA-absorbed power for an Ar + species in a helicon plasma scenario is calculated to be as high as 0.6 nW cm −1 along the incident beam path for nondegenerate-entangled photon pairs that are near-resonant with an intermediate level. The ETPA absorption power exceeds classical TPA and Bremsstrahlung emission, a necessary condition for a feasible fluorescence measurement. Applications of ETPA plasma spectroscopy may include trace impurity detection, ground-state excitation, and continuous-wave pumping for high-bandwidth turbulence measurements. Possible benefits of plasma measurements are less harm to optical components with lower incident flux and reduced stray light that can contaminate optical diagnostics.

Photoisomerization transition state manipulation by entangled two-photon absorption

Significance Entangled two-photon absorption has attracted considerable interest due to its potential applications for low–photon flux spectroscopy and microscopy. The entanglement parameters in the twin-photon state can be exploited to control two-photon excitation processes. Here we demonstrate that photon entanglement provides a powerful novel control knob for the nuclear wave packets in an optically dark electronic state. We show that the transition states in the trans–cis photoisomerization of azobenzene, initiated by an entangled two-photon absorption process, can be manipulated significantly by entangled light. These effects can be monitored experimentally by coherent stimulated X-ray Raman signals which reveal electronic coherences during the passage through conical intersections.

Entangled two-photon absorption with Brownian-oscillator fluctuations

Here, we theoretically investigate the two-photon absorption signals of a three-band (g, e, f) system diagonally coupled to an over-damped Brownian oscillator bath, which induces random Gaussian modulations of energy levels with an arbitrary degree of correlation. For fast modulation, extra 2ω eg and 2ω fe peaks may obscure the g–f transitions in the classical two-photon absorption (CTPA) spectra for nearly resonant e states. These peaks arise from one-photon resonant g–e or e–f transitions. In the slow modulation limit, these peaks vanish because of the short tails of the Gaussian line shape. CTPA strongly depends on the correlations between energy fluctuations. In entangled two-photon absorption, the extra peaks are eliminated because of the broad one-photon but narrow two-photon spectrum of the twin photons. The variation of the coherences between f states with the correlation between energy fluctuations is explored.

Manipulating Two-Photon Absorption of Molecules through Efficient Optimization of Entangled Light

We report how the unique temporal and spectral features of pulsed entangled photons from a parametric downconversion source can be utilized for manipulating electronic excitations through the optimization of their spectral phase. A new comprehensive optimization protocol based on Bayesian optimization has been developed in this work to selectively excite electronic states accessible by two-photon absorption. Using our optimization method, the entangled two-photon absorption probability for a thiophene dendrimer can be enhanced by up to a factor of 20, while classical light turns out to be nonoptimizable. Moreover, the optimization involving photon entanglement enables selective excitation that would not be possible otherwise. In addition to optimization, we have explored entangled two-photon absorption in the small entanglement time limit showing that entangled light can excite molecular electronic states that are vanishingly small for classical light. As a result, we demonstrate these opportunities with an application to a thiophene dendrimer.

Experimental upper bounds for resonance-enhanced entangled two-photon absorption cross section of indocyanine green

Resonant intermediate states have been proposed to increase the efficiency of entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA). Although resonance-enhanced ETPA (r-ETPA) has been demonstrated in atomic systems using bright squeezed vacuum, it has not been studied in organic molecules. We investigate for the first time r-ETPA in an organic molecular dye, indocyanine green (ICG), when excited by broadband entangled photons in near-IR. Similar to many reported virtual state mediated ETPA (v-ETPA) measurements, no r-ETPA signals are measured, with an experimental upper bound for the cross section placed at 6(±2) × 10 −23 cm 2 . In addition, the classical resonance-enhanced two-photon absorption (r-TPA) cross section of ICG at 800 nm is measured for the first time to be 20(±13) GM, where 1 GM equals 10 −50 cm 4 s, suggesting that having a resonant intermediate state does not significantly enhance two-photon processes in ICG. Furthermore, the spectrotemporally resolved emission signatures of ICG excited by entangled photons are also presented to support this conclusion.

Distinguishing resonance symmetries with energy-resolved photoion angular distributions from ion-pair formation in O 2 following two-photon absorption of a 9.3 eV femtosecond pulse

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the photodissociation dynamics of ion-pair formation in O 2 following resonant two-photon absorption of a 9.3 eV femtosecond pulse, where the resulting O + ions are detected using 3-D momentum imaging. Ion-pair formation states of $^3\Sigma^-_g$ and $^3\Pi_g$ symmetry are accessed through predissociation of optically dark continuum Rydberg states converging to the B $^2\Sigma^-_g$ ionic state, which are resonantly populated via a mixture of both parallel-parallel and parallel-perpendicular two-photon transitions. This mixture is evident in the angular distribution of the dissociation relative to the light polarization, and varies with the kinetic energy release (KER) of the fragmenting ion-pair. The KER-dependent photoion angular distribution reveals the underlying two-photon absorption dynamics involved in the ion-pair production mechanism and indicates the existence of two nearly degenerate continuum resonances possessing different symmetries, which can both decay by coupling to ion-pair states of the same total symmetry through internal conversion.

Characterizations of two-photon absorption process induced by defects in aluminum nitride using Z-scan method

Abstract In this work, we reported two-photon absorption (TPA) measurements for aluminum vacancies in Aluminum nitride single crystals. We measured the linear transmission and identified the defect levels. Using the Z-scan method, we measured the TPA coefficients of the transitions between defect levels from 380 nm to 735 nm. The transition occurs between the aluminum vacancies defect levels. Furthermore, the power dependence shows good linear fitting, confirming the TPA mechanism. These results will be helpful for the design and fabrication of ultra-low loss waveguides and integrated photonics in the ultraviolet spectral range.

Rashba splitting in organic–inorganic lead–halide perovskites revealed through two-photon absorption spectroscopy

Abstract The Rashba splitting in hybrid organic–inorganic lead–halide perovskites (HOIP) is particularly promising and yet controversial, due to questions surrounding the presence or absence of inversion symmetry. Here we utilize two-photon absorption spectroscopy to study inversion symmetry breaking in different phases of these materials. This is an all-optical technique to observe and quantify the Rashba effect as it probes the bulk of the materials. In particular, we measure two-photon excitation spectra of the photoluminescence in 2D, 3D, and anionic mixed HOIP crystals, and show that an additional band above, but close to the optical gap is the signature of new two-photon transition channels that originate from the Rashba splitting. The inversion symmetry breaking is believed to arise from ionic impurities that induce local electric fields. The observation of the Rashba splitting in the bulk of HOIP has significant implications for the understanding of their spintronic and optoelectronic device properties.

Colors of entangled two-photon absorption

Multiphoton absorption of entangled photons offers ways for obtaining unique information about chemical and biological processes. Measurements with entangled photons may enable sensing biological signatures with high selectivity and at very low light levels to protect against photodamage. In this paper, we present a theoretical and experimental study of the excitation wavelength dependence of the entangled two-photon absorption (ETPA) process in a molecular system, which provides insights into how entanglement affects molecular spectra. We demonstrate that the ETPA excitation spectrum can be different from that of classical TPA as well as that for one-photon resonant absorption (OPA) with photons of doubled frequency. These results are modeled by assuming the ETPA cross-section is governed by a two-photon excited state radiative linewidth rather than by electron-phonon interactions, and this leads to excitation spectra that match the observed results. Further, we find that the two-photon-allowed states with highest TPA and ETPA intensities have high electronic entanglements, with ETPA especially favoring states with the longest radiative lifetimes. These results provide concepts for the development of quantum light–based spectroscopy and microscopy that will lead to much higher efficiency of ETPA sensors and low-intensity detection schemes.

Two-photon absorption laser induced fluorescence measurements of absolute neutral deuterium density, temperature, and bulk flow in Proto-MPEX

Neutral particle control is critical for fusion fueling and confinement. Neutral diagnostics for fusion-relevant plasmas are commonly restricted to line-integrated or ex situ methods. A non-perturbative, two-photon absorption laser induced fluorescence (TALIF) diagnostic is implemented on the Prototype Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (Proto-MPEX) to probe neutral atomic deuterium in a fusion-relevant plasma at 1 cm intervals along the radius of the vacuum vessel. The diagnostic is situated ~20 m from the vacuum vessel, and a signal is collected along the laser injection axis, requiring only one line-of-sight. TALIF measurements are absolutely calibrated using xenon and krypton. Absolute atomic densities derived from xenon calibration are compared to absolute atomic densities derived from krypton calibration. In this work, preliminary measurements of absolute atomic deuterium density, temperature, and local bulk flow dependence on radial location and input power in Proto-MPEX are presented. Neutral atomic deuterium velocity distribution functions are measured throughout a one-second plasma pulse with a time resolution of 250 ms.

Interferometric two-photon-absorption spectroscopy with three entangled photons

In this work, we propose an interferometric pump-probe technique that employs three entangled photons generated by cascaded spontaneous parametric downconversion. A Mach–Zehnder interferometer made of two three-port waveguide arrays is inserted in the optical path. Two independent phases introduced to manipulate the entangled photon state serve as control parameters and can selectively excite matter pathways. Compared to two-photon-absorption of an entangled photon-pair, the three-photon signals are significantly enhanced by frequency-dispersed photon-counting detection.

Entangled light–matter interactions and spectroscopy

Entangled photons exhibit non-classical light–matter interactions that create new opportunities in materials and molecular science. Notably, in entangled two-photon absorption, the intensity-dependence scales linearly as if only one photon was present. The entangled two-photon absorption cross section approaches but does not match the one-photon absorption cross section. The entangled two-photon cross section also does not follow classical two-photon molecular design motifs. Questions such as these seed the rich but nascent field of entangled light–matter interactions. In this work, we use the experimental developments in entangled photon spectroscopy to outline the current status of the field. Now that the fundamental tools are outlined, it is time to start the exploration of how materials, molecules, and devices can control or utilize interactions with entangled photons.
