Ultracapacitor-Based Uninterrupted Power Supply System

The ultracapacitor-based uninterrupted power supply (UPS) system enhances system reliability; reduces life-of-system, maintenance, and downtime costs; and greatly reduces environmental impact when compared to conventional UPS energy storage systems. This design provides power when required and absorbs power when required to smooth the system load and also has excellent low-temperature performance. The UPS used during hardware tests at Glenn is an efficient, compact, maintenance-free, rack-mount, pure sine-wave inverter unit. The UPS provides a continuous output power up to 1,700 W with a surge rating of 1,870 W for up to one minute at a nominal output voltage of 115 VAC. The ultracapacitor energy storage system tested in conjunction with the UPS is rated at 5.8 F. This is a bank of ten symmetric ultracapacitor modules. Each module is actively balanced using a linear voltage balancing technique in which the cell-to-cell leakage is dependent upon the imbalance of the individual cells. The ultracapacitors are charged by a DC power supply, which can provide up to 300 VDC at 4 A. A constant-voltage, constant-current power supply was selected for this application. The long life of ultracapacitors greatly enhances system reliability, which is significant in critical applications such as medical power systems and space power systems. The energy storage system can usually last longer than the application, given its 20-year life span. This means that the ultracapacitors will probably never need to be replaced and disposed of, whereas batteries require frequent replacement and disposal. The charge-discharge efficiency of rechargeable batteries is approximately 50 percent, and after some hundreds of charges and discharges, they must be replaced. The charge-discharge efficiency of ultracapacitors exceeds 90 percent, and can accept more than a million charges and discharges. Thus, there is a significant energy savings through the efficiency improvement, and there is far less downtime for applications and labor involved in replacing an ultracapacitor versus batteries. Also, the lengthy lifespan of this design would greatly reduce the disposal problems posed by lead acid, nickel cadmium, lithium, and nickel metal hydride batteries. This innovation is recyclable by nature, which further reduces system costs. The disposal of ultracapacitors is simple, as they are constructed of non-hazardous components. They are also safer than batteries in that they can be easily discharged, and left indefinitely in a safe, discharged state where batteries cannot.

Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems, UTrain Course 58423 [Slides]

Identify the principles of operation of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, focusing on double conversion and offline/standby/backup types. The traditional UPS is now referred to as a “double conversion” UPS. The AC input power is rectified into DC. The DC feeds an inverter which provides the AC output. The DC bus is also connected to batteries. It is called double conversion because the first conversion is from AC to DC and the second conversion is from DC to AC. The inverter creates the output waveform to match the bypass input. Because of this, the static bypass switch may be switched between inverter and bypass seamlessly.

Operation of Dual-T-Type Modular Multilevel Converter for Uninterrupted Power Supply Under Bridge Failures

Dual-T-type modular multilevel converter (DTMMC) is an alternative to the existing uninterrupted power supply (UPS) due to its advantage in flexible leg reusing, multiple power ports, and high operating efficiency. Here, in this article, a DTMMC-UPS, which has series configurations on both input/output ac sides, obtains high-voltage grid/load accessing interfaces is presented. In the described system, the fact that copies of T-type legs are employed makes semiconductor failure common to happen. Moreover, both the coupling between rectifier and inverter conversions and the confliction between intercell and inner-cell voltage balancing make fault-tolerant control a tough issue. In this article, the switch fault types are first clarified and diagnosed by the different impacts on normal operation. An improved voltage vector modulation is then deduced to facilitate the planning of proper primary switching patterns, to achieve rectifier side normal operation. The secondary alternated level-shifted pulsed-width modulation (LS-PWM) is also modified to achieve inverter side normal operation. The experiment results are supplied to verify the validity of the modulation-coordinated fault toleration strategy.

Development and Testing of an Ultracapacitor Based Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) System

The NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) initiated the development and testing of an ultracapacitor based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system as a means to provide backup power for the many critical NASA applications. A UPS system typically utilizes batteries for energy storage. The battery is the most vulnerable part of the UPS system, requiring regular maintenance and replacement. Battery performance is also extremely temperature dependent. Ultracapacitors are ideal for UPS systems where long life, maintenance free operation, and excellent low temperature performance is essential. State of the art symmetric ultracapacitors were used for these tests. The ultracapacitors were interconnected in an innovative configuration to minimize interconnection impedance, and to provide voltage balancing. Ultracapacitors can be charged extremely rapidly and supply high current, which are essential characteristics for an effective UPS system. Charging ultracapacitors is significantly less complex than charging batteries since there is no chemical reaction occurring while charging ultracapacitors. The report concludes that the implementation of symmetric ultracapacitors in a UPS system can provide significant improvements in power system performance and reliability.

Reduced Common-Mode Voltage PWM Scheme for Full-SiC Three-Level Uninterruptible Power Supply With Small DC-Link Capacitors

In this article, a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme for three-level full-SiC uninterruptible power supplies is developed to achieve a high power density. Two key passive components are selected for size reduction of the ac-ac stage: common-mode (CM) EMI filter, and dc-link capacitors. To reduce the CM noise, a new vector combination is proposed based on synchronous switching among three-phases. The proposed combinations align CM voltage (CMV) to be a single pulse per switching period. Owing to the simple shape, CMV cancellation between a three-level rectifier and inverter can be maximally utilized. A transition between the three combinations can control the drift of neutral point voltage. An equivalent carrier-based implementation is developed. Second, a simple algorithm to compensate neutral point voltage fluctuation is proposed both for differential mode (DM) and CM output voltage. Low-order harmonics on three-phase currents and an additional high-frequency CM noise by misaligned switching instant can be eliminated. The proposed compensation can be implemented by a simple correction on carrier slopes and injected zero-sequence voltage. The proposed PWM scheme is verified with 20-kW full-SiC UPS switching at 60 kHz with 140 μF dc-link capacitors.

The characteristics of an IPS that combines thin-film photovoltaic power generation with thin-film energy storage are described. Mission concepts for a thin-film IPS as a spacecraft main electrical power system, as a decentralized or distributed power source and as an uninterruptible power supply are discussed. For two specific missions, preliminary sizing of an IPS as a main power system is performed and benefits are assessed. IPS developmental challenges that need to be overcome in order to realize the benefits of an IPS are examined. Based on this preliminary assessment, it is concluded that the most likely and beneficial application of an IPS will be as the main power system on a very small "nanosatellite," or in specialized applications serving as a decentralized or distributed power source or uninterruptible power supply.

A Fast and Scalable Genetic Algorithm-Based Approach for Planning of Microgrids in Distribution Networks

As a result of climate change, extreme weather events are occurring more frequently and with increasing impact. This trend poses a significant challenge for distribution utilities and system operators to ensure that there is uninterrupted power supply to critical loads in their networks; thus, the level of proactive preparation of the distribution system to be able to handle severe impacts of extreme weather events represents the system's resilience. One method that distribution system planners can use to prepare for future extreme events is to plan multiple microgrids which can use local generation as much as possible to supply critical loads. But partitioning an existing distribution system such that multiple feasible islands are planned and which are capable of supporting critical loads is still challenging for distribution systems - first, because of the size of the network graph partitioning problem and, second, because of the difficulty in properly formulating the desired attributes of such islands or microgrids. Therefore, this paper presents a genetic algorithm based approach that facilitates incorporating multiple objectives for grid partitioning by formulating two types of problems - node allocation and edge elimination - and it considers multiple topological and resilience-enhancing objectives. The performance of the proposed genetic algorithm-based approach is numerically evaluated on multiple test systems as well as on a real distribution feeder in Colorado, United States.

Sustainability, Feasibility, and Economics of a Fuel Cell-Powered Data Center

Data centers, used for cloud computing or data storage, consume huge amounts of power and are increasing rapidly in number, and consequently, this increase in power consumption has raised concerns with green and sustainable energy supplies to minimize carbon emissions. Significant renewable power can be a carbon-free energy source to reduce the carbon footprint of a data center; however, direct integration of wind and solar power with data center causes concern of the power quality for uninterrupted power supply to computer servers. The reliable power supply can be accomplished by using power produced from fuel cells fueled by hydrogen. If fed with hydrogen derived from renewable sources, fuel cells will realize carbon-free data centers. This presentation shows various renewable-integration scenarios to meet reliable and sustainable power requirements for a data center.

Mission Applicability Assessment of Integrated Power Components and Systems

The need for smaller lightweight autonomous power systems has recently increased with the increasing focus on micro- and nanosatellites. Small area high-efficiency thin film batteries and solar cells are an attractive choice for such applications. The NASA Glenn Research Center, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, Lithium Power Technologies, MicroSat Systems, and others, have been working on the development of autonomous monolithic packages combining these elements or what are called integrated power supplies (IPS). These supplies can be combined with individual satellite components and are capable of providing continuous power even under intermittent illumination associated with a spinning or Earth orbiting satellite. This paper discusses the space mission applicability, benefits, and current development efforts associated with integrated power supply components and systems. The characteristics and several mission concepts for an IPS that combines thin-film photovoltaic power generation with thin-film lithium ion energy storage are described. Based on this preliminary assessment, it is concluded that the most likely and beneficial application of an IPS will be for small "nanosatellites" or in specialized applications serving as a decentralized or as a distributed power source or uninterruptible power supply.

Analysis of hydrogen infrastructure for the feasibility, economics, and sustainability of a fuel cell powered data center

Data centers used for internet data services, cloud computing, and/or data storage consume vast amounts of electricity and are increasing rapidly in capacity. Consequently, their power consumption has raised concerns about energy sustainability and environmental impacts. Large-scale, on-site renewable energy could help reduce data centers’ carbon footprint; however, wind and solar power alone cannot provide an uninterrupted power supply to computer servers due to their natural variability. Instead, reliable power integration can be achieved by using fuel cells powered by hydrogen from sustainable resources (e.g., wind and solar energy). Establishing a hydrogen infrastructure will be critical for realizing these benefits and establishing fuel cells as a viable power source for data centers. Here, to facilitate the development of novel carbon-free fuel cell data enters, this paper presents renewable power integrated with hydrogen infrastructures in four scenarios to provide reliable hydrogen supply from production to storage. Various paths were analyzed toward a hydrogen supply infrastructure by determining the proper component sizes and calculating the cost of meeting the server load. We used a microgrid modeling software, Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER), and studied the feasibility of fuel cell powered data centers employing renewable hydrogen. The modeling results show various renewable integration configurations to meet reliable and sustainable power requirement under four scenarios for a carbon-free data center.

20-kW Bi-directional Wireless Power Transfer System with Energy Storage System Connectivity

The severity of the economic impact caused by grid outages has been the driving factor for creating innovative solutions that increases interest for the deployment of distributed energy resources to reduce the impact of grid outages. This study presents a novel way of providing export power using bi-directional wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for ac grid side power and mobile energy storage systems (ESSs) connectivity. The proposed concept here interfaces the EV batteries to the AC grid and also can redirect the power from the stationary ESS to grid, to EV batteries, or both simultaneously; providing the capabilities of an uninterrupted power supply (UPS). Results demonstrate the performance and the functionality of the system with overall efficiencies 93% to 97%, depending on the operating mode.

Harnessing Virtual Power Plants Reliably: Enabling tools for increased observability, controllability, operation, and aggregation of distributed energy resources

Harnessing virtual power plants enhances the integration of distributed energy resources into utility grids for a sustainable energy future. Virtual power plants (VPPs) aggregate DERs to enhance resource adequacy and reduce emissions. U.S. utilities are exploring various technologies to manage DERs effectively. FERC Order 2222 allows DERs to participate in both wholesale and retail markets. Enhancing observability and controllability of behind-the-meter (BTM) DERs is essential for reliable grid operations. A hierarchical control architecture can improve coordination among residential energy resources. Field tests showed nearly 20% energy savings and 30% peak power reduction during grid events. Effective management of DERs requires enhanced situational awareness to prevent grid congestion. Integrating DER management systems (DERMS) with existing planning tools can improve operational security. Near-real-time grid models can validate optimal resource set points against resource uncertainty. Traditional uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) can be upgraded to support grid services and become part of VPPs. Upgrading UPS systems can reduce costs by 75% and unlock significant battery capacity. New battery management systems and grid-aware controllers are essential for optimizing UPS performance. Continued research and development are necessary to address challenges in integrating DERs into utility grids. Encouraging customer participation in pilot programs is vital for the evolution of VPPs. Here, the shift towards price-responsive DERs and VPPs is expected to enhance energy distribution efficiency.

Distributed Energy Resource-Cognizant Upgrade Paths to the Traditional Restoration Strategy of Utilities for Improved Load Restoration

Climate change has resulted in increasingly impactful and more frequent occurrences of extreme weather events. This trend poses a significant challenge for distribution utilities and system operators to ensure that there is uninterrupted power supply to critical loads in their networks under fault scenarios; however, currently, utilities deploying the automated fault location, isolation and restoration (FLISR) function in their advanced distribution management system (ADMS) do not take into account the available generation and load-modification capabilities of distributed energy resources present in the disconnected network due to an upstream isolated fault. This results in the network reconfiguration and restoration to result in sub-optimal load restoration. Therefore, this paper presents two approaches that can upgrade the existing FLISR capabilities of distribution utilities to significantly increase the restoration of critical loads. The performance of the proposed approaches is evaluated on a numerical model of a real distribution feeder in Georgia, USA.
