Effects of microstructure and nonstoichiometry on electrical properties of vanadium dioxide films

Voided growth structures of sputter-deposited films affect strongly their optical and electrical properties. Vanadium dioxide is an interesting material to study effects of film microstructure and nonstoichiometry on electrical properties because its phase transition makes it possible to investigate electrical behavior both in a semiconducting phase and in a metallic phase. Vanadium oxide films were deposited with different vanadium oxygen ratios for substrate temperatures between 250 and 550 C by dc reactive magnetron sputtering. The resistivity ratios between a semiconducting phase and a metallic phase are limited to 1000 order by voided boundaries and oxygen vacancies. The voided boundaries are defined by columnar structure and agglomerated grain growth. The results emphasize the necessity of a combination of deposition to obtain the film with a favorable structure and postdeposition annealing to control the film stoichiometry.

VO 2 -based Thermochromic Variable Emittance Coating

As NASA’s Artemis program requirements become increasingly challenging for thermal control, novel passive thermal control solutions are needed to enable lunar surface and lunar transit operations. A thermochromic coating which changes its heat rejection with temperature could eliminate the need for dual loop thermal control architecture in human spacecraft and could reduce or eliminate the need for survival heaters in robotic spacecraft. The variable heat rejection is accomplished by incorporating a vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) layer into a multilayer coating stack up. Intrinsically, VO 2 changes from an insulator to a metal at 68 °C, so a tungsten dopant is introduced to reduce the transition temperature to room temperature or below. This project is focused on developing a process for doping the VO 2 to achieve the desired transition temperature

Applications and safety data

A general overview of activities involving lithium batteries, which shows the various applications and data that were performed for numerous industry and government sponsors is presented. Brief discussions on electrochemical criteria selection, and typical storage and performance data obtained from three systems being developed are presented. Current safety work being done on high-rate, D, SO2 cells is also discussed. Three chemistries were developed and are discussed: lithium vanadium pentoxide, lithium sulfur dioxide, and lithium thionyl chloride. Storage, performance and safety data are graphically presented.

Power sources for search and rescue 406 MHz beacons

The results of a study directed at the selection of a commercially available, safe, low cost, light weight and long storage life battery for search and rescue (Sarsat) 406 MHz emergency beacons are presented. In the course of this work, five electrochemical systems (lithium-manganese dioxide, lithium-carbon monofluoride, lithium-silver vanadium oxide, alkaline cells, and cadmium-mercuric oxide) were selected for limited experimental studies to determine their suitability for this application. Two safe, commercially available batteries (lithium-manganese dioxide and lithium-carbon monofluoride) which meet the near term requirements and several alternatives for the long term were identified.
