The vibro-acoustic mapping of low gravity trajectories on a Learjet aircraft

The NASA LeRC Learjet aircraft is used to fly parabolic trajectories for carrying out in-flight microgravity experiments. To derive full benefit from data obtained in such experiments, it is not only required to understand the low- to moderate-frequency accelerations present but also necessary to characterize the broadband aircraft vibro-acoustic environment. A vibro-acoustic measurement program was conducted during a series of low-gravity trajectories flown on the Learjet. The fuselage and an experiment rack were instrumented with 13 channels of accelerometers and three channels of pressure transducers. The locations of these sensors were determined in order to build a time history of the dynamics involved in the flight of such a parabolic trajectory and thus determine the typical rigid-body and vibro-acoustic loading a payload would experience. The instrumentation, data acquisition sequence, and experimental results showing residual accelerations and high-frequency dynamics are presented. As suspected, the measurements revealed that the aircraft environment cannot simply be described in terms of the static level low-gravity g-vector obtained, but that it also must account for both rigid-body and high-frequency vibro-acoustic dynamics.

The vibro-acoustic mapping of low gravity trajectories on a Learjet aircraft

Terrestrial low gravity research techniques have been employed to gain a more thorough understanding of basic science and technology concepts. One technique frequently used involves flying parabolic trajectories aboard the NASA Lewis Research Center Learjet aircraft. A measurement program was developed to support an isolation system conceptual design. This program primarily was intended to measure time correlated high frequency accelerations (up to 100 Hz) present at various locations throughout the Learjet during a series of trajectories and flights. As suspected, the measurements obtained revealed that the environment aboard such an aircraft can not simply be described in terms of the static level low gravity g vector obtained, but that it also must account for both rigid body and high frequency vibro-acoustic dynamics.

Comparison of Modal Analysis Methods Applied to a Vibro-Acoustic Test Article

Modal testing of a vibro-acoustic test article referred to as the Aluminum Testbed Cylinder (ATC) has provided frequency response data for the development of validated numerical models of complex structures for interior noise prediction and control. The ATC is an all aluminum, ring and stringer stiffened cylinder, 12 feet in length and 4 feet in diameter. The cylinder was designed to represent typical aircraft construction. Modal tests were conducted for several different configurations of the cylinder assembly under ambient and pressurized conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present results from dynamic testing of different ATC configurations using two modal analysis software methods: Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) and MTS IDEAS Polyreference method. The paper compares results from the two analysis methods as well as the results from various test configurations. The effects of pressurization on the modal characteristics are discussed.

Vibro-acoustics for Space Station applications

An analytical procedure has been developed to study noise generation in a double wall and single wall cylindrical shell due to mechanical point loads. The objective of this study is to develop theoretical procedures for parametetric evaluation of noise generation andd noise transmission for the habitability modules of the proposed Space Station operation. The solutions of the governing acoustic-structural equations are obtained utilizing modal decomposition. The numerical results include modal frequencies, deflection response spectral densities and interior noise sound pressure levels.

Vibro-Acoustic FE Analyses of the Saab 2000 Aircraft

A finite element model of the Saab 2000 fuselage structure and interior cavity has been created in order to compute the noise level in the passenger cabin due to propeller noise. Areas covered in viewgraph format include the following: coupled acoustic/structural noise; data base creation; frequency response analysis; model validation; and planned analyses.

Vibro-Acoustics Modal Testing at NASA Langley Research Center

This paper summarizes on-going modal testing activities at the NASA Langley Research Center for two aircraft fuselage structures: a generic "aluminum testbed cylinder" (ATC) and a Beechcraft Starship fuselage (BSF). Subsequent acoustic tests will measure the interior noise field created by exterior mechanical and acoustic sources. These test results will provide validation databases for interior noise prediction codes on realistic aircraft fuselage structures. The ATC is a 12-ft-long, all-aluminum, scale model assembly. The BSF is a 40-ft-long, all-composite, complete aircraft fuselage. To date, two of seven test configurations of the ATC and all three test configurations of the BSF have been completed. The paper briefly describes the various test configurations, testing procedure, and typical results for frequencies up to 250 Hz.

Engineering science research issues in high power density transmission dynamics for aerospace applications

This paper discusses analytical and experimental approaches that will be needed to understand dynamic, vibro-acoustic and design characteristics of high power density rotorcraft transmissions. Complexities associated with mathematical modeling of such systems will be discussed. An overview of research work planned during the next several years will be presented, with emphasis on engineering science issues such as gear contact mechanics, multi-mesh drive dynamics, parameter uncertainties, vibration transmission through bearings, and vibro-acoustic characteristics of geared rotor systems and housing-mount structures. A few examples of work in progress are cited.

Apparatus for monitoring the condition of mining machinery transmissions

A portable apparatus is reported for measuring vibro-acoustic signals of mining machine transmissions for analysis of vibration levels and for damage detection. An automatic recording device connected to the detection channels permits measurments of the overall level of vibroacceleration as well as of the level in octave bands.

Selection of informative parameters of vibroacoustic processes

The problem of selecting informative parameters of vibro-acoustic processes and the construction of apparatus for their determination are discussed. It is assumed that the processes being investigated are structurally uniform and either purely random or contain not very many determinative components.

Shuttle payload vibroacoustic test plan evaluation

Statistical decision theory is used to evaluate seven alternate vibro-acoustic test plans for Space Shuttle payloads; test plans include component, subassembly and payload testing and combinations of component and assembly testing. The optimum test levels and the expected cost are determined for each test plan. By including all of the direct cost associated with each test plan and the probabilistic costs due to ground test and flight failures, the test plans which minimize project cost are determined. The lowest cost approach eliminates component testing and maintains flight vibration reliability by performing subassembly tests at a relatively high acoustic level.

Design and Evaluation of Candidate Pressure Distribution and Air Data System Tile Penetration for the Aeroassist Flight Experiment

This program objectives were to produce a pressure measurements system that penetrates the thermal protection system of a spacecraft and is able to obtain accurate pressure data. The design was tested vibro-acoustically, aerothermally, and structurally and found to be adequate. This design is a possible replacement of the current pressure system on the orbiter.

Expanding the Horizons of Polymer Aerogels

As the Space Community endeavors to reach new heights of human exploration, materials for extreme environments are at the forefront of research. One class of materials of particular focus are polymer aerogels; lightweight solids with nanoscale pore size, high internal surface area, and extremely high porosities. These interesting properties allow aerogels to act as superior thermal insulators, IR scattering filters, sensor platforms, and vibro-acoustic mitigating materials. Polymer aerogels also have the potential to combat issues found in lunar environments such as dust and radiation mitigation. Herein, past and present research, synthesis, and applications of polymer aerogels will be discussed.
