microbasew.c1

The continuous baseline microphysical retrieval, Wacr-based (MICROBASEW) VAP is a baseline retrieval of cloud microphysical properties. MICROBASEW uses a combination of observations from the W-band, zenith pointing radar (WACR), the ceilometer, the micropulse lidar (MPL), the microwave radiometer (MWR) and a merged thermodynamic profile (MERGED SOUNDING) VAP in order to determine the profiles of liquid/ice water content (L/IWC), liquid/ice cloud particle effective radius (re) and cloud fraction.

Cognitive Anti-Jamming Satellite-To-Ground Communications on NASA's SCaN Testbed

Machine learning aided cognitive anti-jamming communications is designed, developed and demonstrated on a live satellite-to-ground link. A wideband autonomous cognitive radio (WACR) is designed and implemented as a hardware-in-the- loop (HITL) prototype. The cognitive engine (CE) of the WACR is implemented on a PC while the software-defined radio (SDR) platform utilized two different radios for spectrum sensing and actual communications. The cognitive engine performs spectrum knowledge acquisition over the complete spectrum range available for the SATCOM system operation and learns an anti-jamming communications protocol to avoid both intentional jammers and inadvertent interferers using reinforcement learning. When the current satellite-to-ground link is jammed, the cognitive engine of the ground receiver directs the satellite transmitter to switch to a new channel that is predicted to be jammer-free for the longest possible duration. The end-to-end, closed-loop system was tested on the NASA Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Testbed on the International Space Station (ISS). The experimental results demonstrated the feasibility of satellite-to-ground cognitive anti-jamming communications along with excellent anti-jamming capability of machine learning aided cognitive protocols against several different types of jammers.

Ka-Band ARM Zenith Radar (KAZR) Active Remote Sensing of Clouds (ARSCL) CloudSat Calibration (KAZRARSCL-CLOUDSAT) (Value-Added Product Report)

The Ka-band ARM Zenith Radar Active Remote Sensing of CLouds CloudSat-aligned (KAZRARSCL-CLOUDSAT) Value-Added Product (VAP) applies satellite-based reflectivity calibrations to KAZRARSCL data sets. The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility has primarily used radar subsystem calibration monitoring to track cloud radar reflectivity drift over time, since reliable external calibration sources or other absolute references (such as corner reflectors) have historically been unavailable or impracticable. A study by Kollias et al. (2019) examined cloud reflectivity profiles observed with a well-characterized spaceborne downward-pointing millimeter cloud radar, operating as part of NASA’s CloudSat satellite mission (Tanelli et al. 2008). The Kollias team derived monthly statistical reflectivity offsets between CloudSat and the various generations of ARM cloud radars (millimeter wavelength cloud radar [MMCR], W-Band ARM Cloud Radar [WACR[, and Ka-band ARM Zenith Radar [KAZR]) for many, but not all, months at most fixed and mobile ARM sites over the period 2007-2017. These offsets, when available, are applied to the existing KAZRARSCL VAP products using the KAZRARSCL-CLOUDSAT VAP.
