Nonlinear harmonics coupled by parallel wave propagations in a time-dependent plasma flow

In a time-dependent flow, nonlinear harmonics can be excited by coupling between linear waves and flow-induced harmonic waves. Examining the dispersion relations and selection rules for the coupling, we investigate nonlinearly coupled harmonics for waves propagating along the magnetic field line in a magnetized plasma, as well as waves in an unmagnetized plasma. The coupled harmonics in a plasma flow are described by analytic dispersion relations and selection rules. This nonlinear coupling is corroborated by the particle-in-cell simulation. Here, the coupled-harmonics model describes a mechanism for the excitation of nonlinear harmonics from linear waves in a time-dependent flow. The spectral analysis of the dispersion relation provides a useful way to evaluate the spatiotemporal behavior of a plasma flow.

Avalanche transport of energetic-ions in magnetic confinement plasmas: nonlinear multiple wave-number simulation

Large burst activity, identified as toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) avalanche, occurs frequently in neutral-beam heated plasmas in National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX). Based on the typical experimental observation of TAE avalanche on NSTX, a self-consistent nonlinear multiple wave-number (k ∥ ≃ n/R, where n toroidal mode-number and R major radius) simulation associated with TAE avalanches is performed using the experimental parameters and profiles before the occurrence of TAE avalanche as the M3D-K input. The wave–wave nonlinear coupling among different modes and the resonant interaction between different modes and energetic-ions during TAE avalanches are identified in the nonlinear multiple wave-number simulations. The resonance overlap during the TAE avalanche is clearly observed in the simulation. It is found that the effective wave–wave coupling and a sufficiently strong drive are two important ingredients for the onset of TAE avalanches. TAE avalanche is considered to be a strongly nonlinear process and it is always accompanied by the simultaneous rapid frequency-chirping and large amplitude bursting of multiple modes and significant energetic-ion losses. The experimental phenomenon is observed on NSTX and is qualitatively reproduced by the simulation results in this work. These findings indicate that the onset of avalanche is triggered by nonlinearity of the system, and are also conducive to understanding the underlying mechanism of avalanche transport of energetic particles in the future burning plasmas, such as International Thermonuclear Experiment Reactor.

Quantitative analysis of zonal flow influence on turbulent plasmas driven by trapped electrons

The role of zonal flow (ZF) in the turbulence saturation of trapped electron modes (TEM) in magnetically confined plasmas is revisited. Here, in this study, we examine ZF excitation and saturation mechanisms in TEM turbulence using detailed free-energy transfer diagnostics from nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations. When the ion channel becomes subdominant, electrons shift to transferring energy to the zonal component, which results in zonal flows always playing a significant though subdominant role, in the case of the temperature gradient driven TEM. The velocity-space structure of energy transfer reveals that trapped electrons directly couple to ZF. Regarding the saturation physics, the zonal flow advection, drift-wave–drift-wave interactions, and stable modes at the pump waves are compared. When ZF saturation is weak, drift-wave–drift-wave interactions play a larger role in maintaining turbulence saturation. The findings elucidate the roles of nonzonal to zonal flow coupling, stable modes, and nonzonal wave-wave interactions, and provide a basis for improving reduced models of turbulent transport.

Super-resonant four-photon collinear laser frequency multiplication in plasma

Resonant four-photon scattering could nearly double frequencies of intense laser pulses in plasma. However, transverse slippage between pulses presents a technological challenge, while collinear four-photon scattering is forbidden for classical light dispersion in plasma. Nonlinear renormalization of intense laser pulses can enable collinear four-photon resonance. However, such a very intensity-sensitive resonance is difficult to maintain for evolving pulses. Remarkably, there is a lower-dimensionality submanifold of the resonant four-photon manifold where the evolving pulses stay in resonance. Furthermore this could enable an all-optical frequency doubling of mildly relativistic-intense laser pulses in collinear geometry, advantageously free of the transverse slippage challenges.

Nonresonant Diffusion in Alpha Channeling

The gradient of fusion-born alpha particles that arises in a fusion reactor can be exploited to amplify waves, which cool the alpha particles while diffusively extracting them from the reactor. Furthermore, the corresponding extraction of the resonant alpha particle charge has been suggested as a mechanism to drive rotation. By deriving a coupled linear-quasilinear theory of alpha channeling, we show that, for a time-growing wave with a purely poloidal wave vector, a current in the nonresonant ions cancels the resonant alpha particle current, preventing the rotation drive but fueling the fusion reaction.

First Measurement of Drift-Alfvén Wave Polarization in Magnetically Confined Fusion Plasmas

Polarization of drift-Alfvén waves, defined as the ratio of electrostatic to electromagnetic fluctuations, has remained unmeasurable in fusion plasmas for decades, despite its pivotal role in understanding wave dynamics and their impact on plasmas. We report the first measurements of drift-Alfvén wave polarization in a hot, magnetically-confined plasma. Here, the breakthrough is enabled by a novel methodology developed from gyrokinetic theory, utilizing fluctuations of electron temperature and density. Analysis of data from the DIII-D tokamak reveals that the waves above the geodesic acoustic mode frequency exhibit dominant electromagnetic polarization, whereas lower frequency waves show a mix of electromagnetic and electrostatic polarization, indicating a strong coupling between shear Alfvén waves and drift-acoustic waves.

LOKI

LOKI is a simulation code that models weakly-coupled plasma evolution using Eulerian kinetic models in four phase space dimensions. The code is useful to understand basic plasma nonlinear plasma physics phenomena - in particular, wave-particle and wave-wave resonances that occur in laser plasma interactions. LOKI can simulate fundamental physical process in low-density plasmas on a scale of hundreds of light wavelengths. It does so by solving the relativistic Vlasov and Valsov-Fokker-Planck differential transport equations describing the collision less and low-collisionality evolution of charged particles in electromagnetic fields in two configuration space and two velocity space dimensions. Two principle electromagnetic models are provided: electrostatic (Poisson's Equation) and electromagnetic (Maxwell's equations).

Toroidal Alfven Wave Coupling (Nonlinear Wave-Wave Interactions) on DIII-D

Connect DIII-D physics with space plasma phenomena. In this case of using the toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes and frequency-chirping Reversed-Shear Alfvén eignmodes in DIII-D, we will document how the nonlinear interactions among dipolar Kinetic Alfvén Wave eigenmodes in space plasmas may determine saturation levels of these fluctuations. We seek evidence of nonlinear energy transfer and wave-wave coupling during 3-wave interactions mediated by a much lower-frequency mode. In FY2019, we found evidence of nonlinear “wave-wave” interactions in 175 relevant shots of archival DIII-D data. Toroidal mode number was identified and spectrograms were produced from each shot’s Mirnov coil data. Bispectral analysis was performed using a preliminary version of a new user friendly code derived from a 1995 M.S. thesis at WVU. These results formed a part of a May 2019 M.S. thesis at WVU.
