A 10d construction of Euclidean axion wormholes in flat and AdS space

Euclidean wormhole geometries sourced by axions and dilatons are puzzling objects in quantum gravity. From one side of the wormhole to the other, the scalar fields traverse a few Planck lengths in field space and so corrections from the UV might potentially affect the consistency of the solution, even when the wormholes are large. Motivated by this, we carry out the first explicit 10d lifts of regular Euclidean axion wormholes. We start off with the lift of Giddings-Strominger wormholes in $\mathcal{N}$ = 8 Euclidean supergravity over a 6-torus to 10d type IIA supergravity and find the solution can be everywhere tuned into the parametrically controlled supergravity regime. Secondly, we construct explicit wormholes in AdS spaces and find them again to be under parametric control. We find the first wormhole solutions in massive type IIA on S 3 × S 3 and in type IIB on T 1,1 . The latter has an explicit holographic dual, and similar to the earlier constructions in AdS 5 × S 5 /$\mathbb{Z}$ k , the wormholes violate operator positivity since Tr(F ± $\star$ F) 2 < 0. This puzzle might arise from subtleties related to computing holographic n-point functions in the presence of multiple boundaries.

Wormholes without averaging

After averaging over fermion couplings, SYK has a collective field description that sometimes has “wormhole” solutions. We study the fate of these wormholes when the couplings are fixed. Working mainly in a simple model, we find that the wormhole saddles persist, but that new saddles also appear elsewhere in the integration space — “half-wormholes.” The wormhole contributions depend only weakly on the specific choice of couplings, while the half-wormhole contributions are strongly sensitive. The half-wormholes are crucial for factorization of decoupled systems with fixed couplings, but they vanish after averaging, leaving the non-factorizing wormhole behind.

Traversable wormhole dynamics on a quantum processor

The holographic principle, theorized to be a property of quantum gravity, postulates that the description of a volume of space can be encoded on a lower-dimensional boundary. The anti-de Sitter (AdS)/conformal field theory correspondence or duality is the principal example of holography. The Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model of N >> 1 Majorana fermions has features suggesting the existence of a gravitational dual in AdS 2 , and is a new realization of holography. Here, we invoke the holographic correspondence of the SYK many-body system and gravity to probe the conjectured ER=EPR relation between entanglement and spacetime geometry through the traversable wormhole mechanism as implemented in the SYK model. A qubit can be used to probe the SYK traversable wormhole dynamics through the corresponding teleportation protocol. This can be realized as a quantum circuit, equivalent to the gravitational picture in the semiclassical limit of an infinite number of qubits. Here we use learning techniques to construct a sparsified SYK model that we experimentally realize with 164 two-qubit gates on a nine-qubit circuit and observe the corresponding traversable wormhole dynamics. Despite its approximate nature, the sparsified SYK model preserves key properties of the traversable wormhole physics: perfect size winding, coupling on either side of the wormhole that is consistent with a negative energy shockwave, a Shapiro time delay, causal time-order of signals emerging from the wormhole, and scrambling and thermalization dynamics. Our experiment was run on the Google Sycamore processor. By interrogating a two-dimensional gravity dual system, our work represents a step towards a program for studying quantum gravity in the laboratory. Future developments will require improved hardware scalability and performance as well as theoretical developments including higher-dimensional quantum gravity duals and other SYK-like models.

Wormholes and black hole microstates in AdS/CFT

It has long been known that the coarse-grained approximation to the black hole density of states can be computed using classical Euclidean gravity. In this work we argue for another entry in the dictionary between Euclidean gravity and black hole physics, namely that Euclidean wormholes describe a coarse-grained approximation to the energy level statistics of black hole microstates. To do so we use the method of constrained instantons to obtain an integral representation of wormhole amplitudes in Einstein gravity and in full-fledged AdS/CFT. These amplitudes are non-perturbative corrections to the two-boundary problem in AdS quantum gravity. The full amplitude is likely UV sensitive, dominated by small wormholes, but we show it admits an integral transformation with a macroscopic, weakly curved saddle-point approximation. The saddle is the “double cone” geometry of Saad, Shenker, and Stanford, with fixed moduli. In the boundary description this saddle appears to dominate a smeared version of the connected two-point function of the black hole density of states, and suggests level repulsion in the microstate spectrum. Using these methods we further study Euclidean wormholes in pure Einstein gravity and in IIB supergravity on Euclidean AdS 5 × S 5 . We address the perturbative stability of these backgrounds and study brane nucleation instabilities in 10d supergravity. In particular, brane nucleation instabilities of the Euclidean wormholes are lifted by the analytic continuation required to obtain the Lorentzian spectral form factor from gravity. Our results indicate a factorization paradox in AdS/CFT.

Gravitational lensing effect in traversable wormholes

Highlights: • Strong gravitational lensing in the context of charged wormhole is studied. • The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of photon spheres at or outside the throat of the charged wormhole is derived. • Photon spheres are investigated in three cases for three different forms of redshift function. The present paper is intended for studying the effect of strong gravitational lensing in the context of charged wormhole. To study this effect, the conditions determining the existence of photon spheres at and outside the throat are obtained. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of photon spheres at or outside the throat of the charged wormhole is derived. Furthermore, photon spheres are investigated in three cases for three different forms of redshift function. These three cases include the existence of effective photon spheres (i) at the throat, (ii) outside the throat and (iii) both at and outside the throat. Consequently, these provide the information about the formation of infinite number of concentric rings and may lead to the detection of wormhole geometries.

Replica wormholes for an evaporating 2D black hole

Quantum extremal islands reproduce the unitary Page curve of an evaporating black hole. This has been derived by including replica wormholes in the gravitational path integral, but for the transient, evaporating black holes most relevant to Hawking’s paradox, these wormholes have not been analyzed in any detail. In this paper we study replica wormholes for black holes formed by gravitational collapse in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, and confirm that they lead to the island rule for the entropy. The main technical challenge is that replica wormholes rely on a Euclidean path integral, while the quantum extremal islands of an evaporating black hole exist only in Lorentzian signature. Furthermore, the Euclidean equations for the Schwarzian mode are non-local, so it is unclear how to connect to the local, Lorentzian dynamics of an evaporating black hole. We address these issues with Schwinger-Keldysh techniques and show how the non-local equations reduce to the local ‘boundary particle’ description in special cases.

Traversable wormhole solution with a background Kalb–Ramond field

Highlights: • Wormhole solutions of gravity in a Lorentz breaking symmetry scenario are found. • Light deflection by the wormhole in a Lorentz breaking symmetry scenario is calculated. • It is shown the influence of the vacuum expectation value of a Kalb–Ramond field in deflection of light. We obtain a static spherically symmetric wormhole solution due to the vacuum expectation value (vev) of a Kalb–Ramond field. The Kalb–Ramond (vev) is a background tensor field which produces a local Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) of spacetime. Considering a non-minimal coupling between the Kalb–Ramond (vev) and the Ricci tensor, we found an exact traversable wormhole solution sustained by matter sources with a negative isotropic pressure. The matter source satisfies the energy conditions at the throat for particular choices of the LSB parameter. Moreover, we employ the Gauss–Bonnet method to analyze the deflection angle of light in the weak limit approximation.

Wormhole as a waveguide for non-relativistic quantum particles

Herein we consider a static wormhole as a waveguide and determine the conditions for full transmission through the wormhole waveguide for a quantum particle satisfying Schrodinger equation. We find that the waveguide is transparent when the angular momentum L of the quantum particle is 0 and for $L\ne 0$ when the de Broglie wavelength of the quantum particle is a multiple depending on the inverse of the angular momentum times the throat radius of the wormhole.

Replica wormholes and the black hole interior

Recent work has shown how to obtain the Page curve of an evaporating black hole from holographic computations of entanglement entropy. We show how these computations can be justified using the replica trick, from geometries with a spacetime wormhole connecting the different replicas. In a simple model, we study the Page transition in detail by summing replica geometries with different topologies. We compute related quantities in less detail in more complicated models, including JT gravity coupled to conformal matter and the SYK model. Separately, we give a direct gravitational argument for entanglement wedge reconstruction using an explicit formula known as the Petz map; again, a spacetime wormhole plays an important role. We discuss an interpretation of the wormhole geometries as part of some ensemble average implicit in the gravity description.

Wormholes from heavy operator statistics in AdS/CFT

We construct higher dimensional Euclidean AdS wormhole solutions that reproduce the statistical description of the correlation functions of an ensemble of heavy CFT operators. We consider an operator which effectively backreacts on the geometry in the form of a thin shell of dust particles. Assuming dynamical chaos in the form of the ETH ansatz, we demonstrate that the semiclassical path integral provides an effective statistical description of the microscopic features of the thin shell operator in the CFT. The Euclidean wormhole solutions provide microcanonical saddlepoint contributions to the cumulants of the correlation functions over the ensemble of operators. We finally elaborate on the role of these wormholes in the context of non-perturbative violations of bulk global symmetries in AdS/CFT.

Comments on the double cone wormhole

In this paper we revisit the double cone wormhole introduced by Saad, Shenker and Stanford (SSS), which was shown to reproduce the ramp in the spectral form factor. As a first approximation we can say that this solution computes Tr[e –iKT ], a trace of the “evolution” operator that generates Schwarzschild time translations on the two sided wormhole geometry. This point of view leads to a simple way to compute the normalization factor of the wormhole. When we have bulk matter fields, SSS suggested using a modified evolution K ~ which involves a slightly complex geometry, so that we are really computing Tr[e –iK ~ T ]. We argue that, for general black holes, the spectrum of K ~ is given by quasinormal mode frequencies. We explain that this reproduces various features that were previously predicted from the spectral form factor on hydrodynamics grounds. We also give a general algebraic construction of the modified boost in terms of operators constructed from half sided modular inclusions. For the special case of JT gravity, we work out the backreaction of matter on the geometry of the double cone and find that it deforms the geometry in an undesirable direction. We finally give some comments on the possible physical interpretation of K ~ .

Axion wormholes with massive dilaton

Abstract If Euclidean wormholes contribute meaningfully to the path integral of quantum gravity they can have important implications for particle physics and cosmology. The dominant effects arise from wormholes whose sizes are comparable to the cut-off scale of effective field theory, for which ultraviolet corrections become relevant. We study corrections to classical axion wormhole solutions in string motivated scenarios in which the dilaton partner of the axion becomes massive. We find corrections near the neck region which are consistent with a recent version of the weak gravity conjecture for axions.

Traversable wormholes in four dimensions

Here, we present a wormhole solution in four dimensions. It is a solution of an Einstein Maxwell theory plus charged massless fermions. The fermions give rise to a negative Casimir-like energy, which makes the wormhole possible. It is a long wormhole that does not lead to causality violations in the ambient space. It can be viewed as a pair of entangled near extremal black holes with an interaction term generated by the exchange of fermion fields. The solution can be embedded in the Standard Model by making its overall size small compared to the electroweak scale.

Gravitational waves from a black hole orbiting in a wormhole geometry

Current ground-based gravitational wave detectors are tuned to observe compact object mergers from stellar mass black holes and neutron stars; ~50 such events have been published to date. More exotic compact objects may exist, collisions of which would also generate copious gravitational waves. In this work, we model a stellar mass black hole inspiral into a stable, nonspinning, traversable wormhole, and find a characteristic waveform—an antichirp and/or burst—as the black hole outspirals into our region of the Universe. This is a characteristic signature which can be useful in wormhole searches in gravitational wave data or used to constrain wormhole geometries.

Quantum Gravity in the Lab. I. Teleportation by Size and Traversable Wormholes

With the long-term goal of studying models of quantum gravity in the lab, we propose holographic teleportation protocols that can be readily executed in table-top experiments. These protocols exhibit similar behavior to that seen in the recent traversable-wormhole constructions of Gao et al. [J. High Energy Phys., 2017, 151 (2017)] and Maldacena et al. [Fortschr. Phys., 65, 1700034 (2017)]: information that is scrambled into one half of an entangled system will, following a weak coupling between the two halves, unscramble into the other half. We introduce the concept of teleportation by size to capture how the physics of operator-size growth naturally leads to information transmission. The transmission of a signal through a semiclassical holographic wormhole corresponds to a rather special property of the operator-size distribution that we call size winding. For more general systems (which may not have a clean emergent geometry), we argue that imperfect size winding is a generalization of the traversablewormhole phenomenon. In addition, a form of signaling continues to function at high temperature and at large times for generic chaotic systems, even though it does not correspond to a signal going through a geometrical wormhole but, rather, to an interference effect involving macroscopically different emergent geometries. Finally, we outline implementations that are feasible with current technology in two experimental platforms: Rydberg-atom arrays and trapped ions.

Long-range wormhole teleportation

We extend the protocol of Gao and Jafferis arXiv:1911.07416 to allow wormhole teleportation between two entangled copies of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model communicating only through a classical channel. We demonstrate in finite $N$ simulations that the protocol exhibits the characteristic holographic features of wormhole teleportation discussed and summarized in Jafferis et al. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05424-3 . We review and exhibit in detail how these holographic features relate to size winding which, as first shown by Brown et al. arXiv:1911.06314 and Nezami et al. arXiv:2102.01064, encodes a dual description of wormhole teleportation.

The Wormholes Within: A Study of 1, 3, 5–Triamino–2, 4, 6–Trinitrobenzene Crystal Morphology by Micro and Nano–Scale X–Ray Computed Tomography and its Effects Upon the Shock Sensitivity of Detonation

We report that we understand heterogeneous-explosive detonation only to the extent that we can first measure the salient chemical and microstructural features. Barring an inordinate amount of trial and error, we can tailor the detonation properties of our HE formulations only to the extent that we understand (at least qualitatively) the same effects. As an insensitive high explosive, 1, 3, 5-triamino-2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) burns more heterogeneously than conventional high explosives, making its detonation properties sensitive to microstructure. The Benziger route can produce various grain morphologies depending on the amount of water used in the amination step. So-called dry-aminated (DA) TATB crystals are riddled with a void structure called wormholes, which are washed out ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) inclusions that form during synthesis. So-called wet-aminated (WA) TATB crystals do not contain NH 4 Cl inclusions but possess a very convoluted external structure. Using both micro and nano-scale CT, we explore three DA-TATB lots that reflect evolutionary processing changes, plus one WA-TATB material. Micro CT imaged crystal collections show the exterior grain structure, revealing its roughness and providing a crude particle size measurement. The DA-TATB lots that test most sensitively in the LANL ECOT corner-turning test are roughest, having the appearance of being “corroded”. Nano-scale CT reveals both internal NH 4 Cl inclusions and void structures. The DA-TATB lots that tested intermediate and high sensitivity in ECOT exhibited similar wormhole structures, which were more extensive than that of the low-sensitivity lot. The least sensitive DA-TATB lot also retained more NH 4 Cl, consistent with reduced connectivity of voids to the surface.
