Catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide by a zinc hydride compound, [Tptm]ZnH, and conversion to the methanol level

The zinc hydride compound, [Tptm]ZnH, may achieve the reduction of CO 2 by (RO) 3 SiH (R = Me, Et) to the methanol oxidation level, (MeO) x Si(OR) 4–x , via the formate species, HCO 2 Si(OR) 3 . Furthermore, because insertion of CO 2 into the Zn–H bond is more facile than insertion of HCO 2 Si(OR) 3 , conversion of HCO 2 Si(OR) 3 to the methanol level only occurs to a significant extent in the absence of CO 2 .

Removal of Na + and Ca2 + with Prussian blue analogue electrodes for brackish water desalination

Desalination of brackish water sources is critical to addressing the growing global freshwater demand. One promising approach is electrically driven desalination using intercalation electrodes. While intercalation electrodes have been widely researched for energy storage applications, only a small subset of those materials is suitable for desalination. In this work, we report the synthesis, characterization, and in-device testing of three Prussian blue analogue intercalation compounds: copper, manganese, and zinc hexacyanoferrate with formulas K x M[Fe(CN) 6 ] z ·nH 2 O (M = Cu, Mn, Zn). The desalination performance for each of these materials against carbon electrodes is reported for Na + intercalation and for Ca 2+ intercalation using 1000 ppm NaCl and 1000 ppm CaCl 2 feed solutions, respectively. While the copper and manganese analogs showed promising performance for Na + and Ca 2+ intercalation, the zinc compound was unstable and underwent rapid dissolution. Manganese hexacyanoferrate showed the best desalination performance in terms of salt removal capacities and salt removal rates with NaCl while copper hexacyanoferrate performed the best with CaCl 2 . The manganese analog proved to be the most stable intercalation material, retaining 83% and 72% of its salt removal capacity after 280 cycles in NaCl and CaCl 2 feed solutions respectively.

Synthesis and structural characterization of 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine zinc formate: Hydroboration and hydrosilylation of CO 2 and carbonyl compounds

The zinc formate compound (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 is obtained via the reaction of Zn(O 2 CH) 2 with 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (terpy) and has been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction as possessing formate ligands that coordinate via a κ 1 -monodentate coordination mode, which is in accord with IR spectroscopic studies. In terms of reactivity, (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 participates in catalytic transformations involving CO 2 and carbonyl compounds via hydrosilylation and hydroboration reactions. For example, (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 achieves hydroboration of Me 2 CO and Ph 2 CO by HBpin to afford R 2 C(H)OBpin, and triple insertion of Ph 2 CO, PhC(O)Me, Me 2 CO and PhCHO into the Si–H bonds of PhSiH 3 to afford PhSi[OCH(R)R’] 3 . In addition, CO 2 also undergoes hydroboration and hydrosilylation by HBpin and (MeO) 3 SiH in the presence of (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 to afford HCO 2 Bpin and HCO 2 Si(OMe) 3 , respectively.

Synthesis and structural characterization of 2,2’-bipyridine zinc formate: Analysis of formate bonding and hydrosilylation of CO 2 and carbonyl compounds

The zinc formate compound (bipy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 is obtained via the reaction of Zn(O 2 CH) 2 with 2,2’-bipyridine (bipy). In addition, (bipy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 may be formed from zinc hydride via addition of bipy followed by addition of (i) HCO 2 H and (ii) CO 2 . The molecular structure of (bipy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 has been determined by X-ray diffraction, thereby demonstrating that it exists as a monomeric species with a distorted tetrahedral zinc center and monodentate formate ligands. Analysis of the bonding within the formate ligand indicates that the zinc–formate moiety is not best represented by a Zn–O–C(=O)H resonance structure, but instead possesses a significant ionic component that reduces the C=O bond order and increases the C–O bond order. The formate compound (bipy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 participates in hydrosilylation transformations involving CO 2 and carbonyl compounds.

Anisotropy of the magnetic and transport properties of EuZn 2 As 2

Several recent studies have shown that the anisotropy in the magnetic structure of EuCd 2 As 2 plays a significant role in stabilizing the Weyl nodes. Therefore, to investigate the relationship between magnetic anisotropy and Weyl physics, we present a comparative study between EuZn 2 As 2 and EuCd 2 As 2 that are isostructural but with different magnetic anisotropy. We performed structural analysis, electronic transport, and magnetization experiments on millimeter-sized single crystals of EuZn 2 As 2 , and compared the results to those of EuCd 2 As 2 . By combining the first principle calculations and neutron diffraction experiment, we identify the magnetic ground state of EuZn 2 As 2 as A-type antiferromagnetic order with a transition temperature (T_N = 19.6 K) twice that of EuCd 2 As 2 . Like EuCd 2 As 2 , the negative magnetoresistance of EuZn 2 As 2 is observed after suppressing the resistivity peak at T_N with increasing fields. However, the anisotropy in both transport and magnetization are much reduced in EuZn 2 As 2 . The difference could be ascribed to the weaker spin-orbit coupling, more localized d orbitals, and a larger contribution from the Eu s orbitals in the zinc compound, as suggested by the electronic band calculations. The same band structure effect could be also responsible for the observation of a smaller nonlinear anomalous Hall effect in EuZn 2 As 2 compared to EuCd 2 As 2 .

Zinc chloride affects chondrogenesis via VEGF signaling

Highlights: • ZnCl2 increases expression of various chondrogenic signaling intermediates. • VEGF/VEGFR play a key role in modulating levels of chondrogenesis. • Insulin mimetics are an appealing option for improvement of fracture healing. • Axitinib + ZnCl2 treatment results in decreased transcription of chondrogenic genes. Insulin mimetics, including zinc containing compounds, have previously been shown to influence chondrogenesis as it relates to healing of fractures in various preclinical models. However, the mechanism by which these compounds drive chondrogenic differentiation is yet undefined. Here, via next-generation sequencing (NGS) and in vitro functional validation, we show that Zinc Chloride (ZnCl{sub 2}) induces expression of both chondrogenic genes (Sox9, Runx1, collagen) as well as genes associated with VEGF-mediated signal transduction, including VEGF receptors 1 and 2 and their ligands; VEGF-A and VEGF-B. Noticeably, although insulin was able to also induce expression of these pro-angiogenic and pro-chondrogenic genes, the impact of insulin on expression of VEGF receptor and ligand genes was marginal when compared to that of ZnCl{sub 2.} Furthermore, while the VEGFR antagonist, Axitinib, was able to attenuate the pro-chondrogenic effects of both insulin and ZnCl{sub 2}; a reduction in gene and protein expression was most profoundly observed when the antagonist was applied to cells treated with ZnCl{sub 2.} Taken together, these data suggest an important role for the VEGF-mediated signal transduction pathways in the positive effects observed when applying zinc-based compounds as adjuvants for chondrogenesis-mediated fracture healing. In this regard, further mechanistic evaluation of ZnCl{sub 2} and other zinc-containing insulin mimetics may support rational design of therapies targeted for disease indications associated with impaired fracture healing.

Heterogeneous Structural Evolution of In–Zn–O Thin Films during Annealing

Amorphous In-Zn-O (a-IZO) thin films are among the most promising transparent conducting materials. Applications of a-IZO include thin film transistors for display technology and photovoltaic devices. However, the use of this material in practical devices has been impeded by limitations in our understanding of the relationship between a-IZO film structure and electrical properties. Here, we use in situ X-ray reflectivity to provide experimental evidence for a vertically heterogeneous, thermally induced structural relaxation that had been predicted for amorphous oxide films but not previously observed. The structural relaxation is shown to be dependent on the thermal annealing environment. Complementary in situ current-voltage curves and ex situ Van der Pauw measurements further show that thermal annealing also influences the electrical performance of the films. Here our results suggest that both oxygen uptake and structural relaxation contribute to the reduction in free carriers within a-IZO films during postdeposition processing. The structural heterogeneity and loss of carriers that occur during thermal annealing are only partly reversible. We anticipate that this insight into the structure-processing-property relationships within a-IZO will help to enable a-IZO-based devices.

Promotion and Tuning of the Electrochemical Reduction of Hetero‐ and Homobimetallic Zinc Complexes**

Abstract Compounds containing multiple metals attract significant interest due to the useful redox and reactivity properties of such species. Here, the electrochemical properties of a family of macrocyclic complexes that feature a zinc(II) center paired with a secondary redox‐inactive metal cation in heterobimetallic (Na + , Ca 2+ , Nd 3+ , Y 3+ ) motifs or homobimetallic (Zn 2+ ) motifs have been investigated. The new complexes were prepared via a divergent strategy, isolated, and structurally characterized with single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. XRD results show that the structures of the complexes are modulated by the identity of the incorporated secondary metal ions. Cyclic voltammetry data reveal that ligand‐centered reduction is promoted in the bimetallic complexes and that the paired metal ions synergistically influence the redox properties of the complexes. Similar to prior work from our group and others, the bimetallic complexes containing stronger Lewis acids undergo more significant reduction potential shifts; contrasting with prior work on complexes containing redox‐active metals, however, the zinc(II) complexes studied here display faster electron transfer (as judged by lower reorganization energies, λ) when incorporating di‐ or tri‐valent Lewis acids in contrast to monovalent (and more weakly acidic) sodium. The quantified trends in these data offer insights that could help distinguish metal‐ versus ligand‐centered reduction of bimetallic complexes.

Hydrogen bonding to the formate ligand: Structural characterization of 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine zinc formate·H 2 O

Here, two polymorphs of the 2,2’:6’,2”-terpyridine zinc formate compound (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 •H 2 O have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. In each case, the formate ligands coordinate via a K 1 -monodentate coordination mode and participate in hydrogen bonding interactions with water molecules. Despite this similarity, however, the polymorphs exhibit different hydrogen bonding motifs. Specifically, while one polymorph forms chains in which water molecules link adjacent (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 molecules, the other polymorph consists of discrete tetranuclear [(terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 •H 2 O] 4 moieties.

III-V/Si Tandem Cells Utilizing Interdigitated Back Contact Si Cells and Varying Terminal Configurations

Integrating wide-bandgap III-V with Si solar cells has been shown to yield higher efficiencies than Si alone: As also presented at this conference, four-terminal efficiencies exceeding 32% have been attained. In this contribution, independent and electrically connected operation of the subcells in such tandem cells is examined. The optics of the tandem cell change significantly if a conducting interconnect, rather than an insulating glass slide, is required between the subcells. These effects are studied, and optically optimized structures for different types of tandem cell operation are presented. It is found that minimizing reflection at the conductive interface between the two cells while maintaining conductivity is the key challenge faced in such devices.

Discovery of Novel Rhizoctonia solani DHFR Inhibitors as Fungicides Using Virtual Screening

Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) is an essential enzyme in the folate pathway and has been recognized as a well-known target for antibacterial and antifungal drugs. We discovered eight compounds from the ZINC database using virtual screening to inhibit Rhizoctonia solani (R. solani), a fungal pathogen in crops. These compounds were evaluated with in vitro assays for enzymatic and antifungal activity. Among these, compound Hit8 is the most active R. solani DHFR inhibitor, with the IC 50 of 10.2 μM. The selectivity of inhibition is 22.3 against human DHFR with the IC 50 of 227.7 μM. Moreover, Hit8 has higher antifungal activity against R. solani (EC 50 of 38.2 mg L –1 ) compared with validamycin A (EC 50 of 67.6 mg L –1 ), a well-documented fungicide. These results suggest that Hit8 may be a potential fungicide. Finally, our study exemplifies a computer-aided method to discover novel inhibitors that could target plant pathogenic fungi.

Identification of Small-Molecule Inhibitors of Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 Signaling via In Silico Hot Spot Prediction and Molecular Docking to α-Klotho

Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a therapeutic target for treating hereditary and acquired hypophosphatemic disorders, such as X-linked hypophosphatemic (XLH) rickets and tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO), respectively. FGF23-induced hypophosphatemia is mediated by signaling through a ternary complex formed by FGF23, the FGF receptor (FGFR), and α-Klotho. Currently, disorders of excess FGF23 are treated with an FGF23-blocking antibody, burosumab. Small-molecule drugs that disrupt protein/protein interactions necessary for the ternary complex formation offer an alternative to disrupting FGF23 signaling. In this study, the FGF23:α-Klotho interface was targeted to identify small-molecule protein/protein interaction inhibitors since it was computationally predicted to have a large fraction of hot spots and two druggable residues on α-Klotho. We further identified Tyr433 on the KL1 domain of α-Klotho as a promising hot spot and α-Klotho as an appropriate drug-binding target at this interface. Subsequently, we performed in silico docking of ~5.5 million compounds from the ZINC database to the interface region of α-Klotho from the ternary crystal structure. Following docking, 24 and 20 compounds were in the final list based on the lowest binding free energies to α-Klotho and the largest number of contacts with Tyr433, respectively. Herein, five compounds were assessed experimentally by their FGF23-mediated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activities in vitro, and two of these reduced activities significantly. Both these compounds were predicted to have favorable binding affinities to α-Klotho but not have a large number of contacts with the hot spot Tyr433. ZINC12409120 was found experimentally to disrupt FGF23:α-Klotho interaction to reduce FGF23-mediated ERK activities by 70% and have a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 5.0 ± 0.23 μM. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the ZINC12409120:α-Klotho complex starting from in silico docking poses reveal that the ligand exhibits contacts with residues on the KL1 domain, the KL1–KL2 linker, and the KL2 domain of α-Klotho simultaneously, thereby possibly disrupting the regular function of α-Klotho and impeding FGF23:α-Klotho interaction. ZINC12409120 is a candidate for lead optimization.

Friction Stir Dovetailing of AA7099 to Steel with AA6061 Interlayer for Reduced Zn Embrittlement at Dissimilar Interface

Joining of high strength Al alloy (AA7099) to steel (rolled homogeneous armor) with and without AA6061 interlayer was achieved using a friction stir dovetailing (FSD) method. Detailed investigations were conducted to establish correlations between mechanical performance and microstructural evolution of FSD joints. Lap shear tensile testing revealed that incorporation of the AA6061 interlayer combined with tailored processing methodology significantly improved both mechanical interlocking and load transmission across the dovetail interface. Following incorporation of the interlayer, the maximum load carrying capacity and peak extension (of the AA7099/AA6061/steel joint) are 60% and 210% higher, respectively, than results obtained from an AA7099/steel joint without an interlayer. Without an AA6061 interlayer, formation of zinc rich intermetallic compounds led to brittle interfacial failure of the AA7099-steel FSD joint. Incorporation of novel tool and joint configuration eliminated asymmetric joint performance as a function of loading direction, which is generally observed in friction stir lap welding. The efficacy of the use of an AA6061 interlayer in joining AA7099 to steel was demonstrated through mechanical testing as well as high resolution analytical electron microscopy characterization.

Synthesis and Evaluation of Cu@ZnO Core@Shell Nanowires for Use in the Carbon Dioxide Thermal Reduction Reaction

Copper-based core@shell nanomaterials are of interest for the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide toward value-added products. In this context, we have developed a facile, microwave-based procedure for the reliable and reproducible synthesis of Cu@ZnO core@shell nanowires. A systematic assessment of the effect of rationally varying various reaction conditions on this protocol was completed in order to better evaluate the growth process of these core–shell motifs. We determined that among different reaction parameters, it was the critical role of reaction time which enabled the quantitatively reliable growth of external shells with tunable thicknesses of up to 20 nm. As a demonstration of the material’s practical viability, catalytic testing was subsequently performed for the reverse water–gas shift reaction (CO 2 + H 2 → CO + H 2 O), with the evolution of the process followed with in situ X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in order to probe structural changes and gauge stability. These tests found the catalysts to be effective at converting CO 2 to CO, with notable stability detected in the shell layer and no observed alloying between copper and zinc. Furthermore, our studies support the idea that the Cu–ZnO and CuO x –ZnO interfaces are essential for the effective activation of CO 2 and H 2 .

AP-XPS Study of the Reaction of O 2 and CO 2 with Zn–Au(111) Surface Alloys: Activation of O–O/C–O Bonds and the Formation of ZnO

Synchrotron-based ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) was used to study the dissociation of O 2 and CO 2 on Zn-Au(111) alloys which contained 0.2-0.3 monolayers of zinc. Although Au(111) is inert, the alloys displayed a high activity for the cleavages of O-O and C-O bonds at room temperature with the formation of ZnO x species. Dissociative adsorption of O 2 at 300 K destroyed the alloys and the results of AP-XPS pointed to the co-existence of two types of oxygen species on the surface: ZnO x and chemisorbed O atoms (O chem ) on Au or the Au-ZnO interface. Annealing from room temperature to 600 K induced a O chem → ZnO x transformation that reflected the poor stability of O atoms on Au(111). The Zn-Au(111) systems exhibited a reactivity towards CO 2 that was much larger than that seen for Au(111), Cu(111) or surfaces of late transition metals like, Ni, Pd or Pt. At 300 K, CO 2 underwent partial dissociation depositing large amounts of O chem on the surface with minor formation of ZnO x . In addition, the deposited O chem reacted with CO 2 to form surface carbonate groups. Dosing of CO 2 at 500-600 K mainly led to the formation of ZnO x and the surface carbonate almost disappeared. In the presence of hydrogen, i.e. reaction feeds with a CO 2 to H 2 ratio of 1:3, the surface chemistry at 300 K was very similar to that seen for pure CO 2 with the formation of ZnO x and carbonate groups. In contrast, at 500-600 K, reaction with hydrogen induced the removal of ZnO x and CO 3 /HCOO species. Finally, our AP-XPS results are consistent with the idea that CO 2 hydrogenation on AuZn alloys involves a redox process where there is sequential oxidation by CO 2 and reduction by H 2 to yield methanol.
