Prefabricated Standard Modular Hydropower Installations for Low-cost Small Hydropower

The goal of the present project was to investigate the potential savings in greenfield hydropower project costs across sites having vastly different characteristics. Littoral Power Systems, Inc. (LPS) undertook the project described herein to explore the promise of Standard Modular Hydropower (SMH) to transform the processes of site identification, conceptual design, detailed design, and construction planning to support low- cost, environmentally attractive development of small hydropower facilities at new stream- reaches. This report includes descriptions of the work to develop these processes, the resulting facility designs achieved using these processes and the projected economics. Installation cost estimates for the resulting conceptual greenfield facility design at two different locations come in at $\$3,419$/kW for Balcony Falls and $\$2,124$/kW for LPS 566. The installation time from site preparation to commissioning-ready is estimated to be 58 weeks for the conceptual facility at Balcony Falls and 42 weeks for the conceptual facility at LPS 566. A real challenge to any hydropower facility – not only the two cases studied here – is that environmental and social conditions can change, and as such, the facility may be required to change. The h-Modulor modules connect uniquely and are structurally independent, enabling site configurations to be changed on the fly, as needed. These results show that LPS's h-Modulor SMH approach delivers an attractive balance between efficiency, economics, and environmental sustainability for small hydro greenfield sites.

Single-Event Transient Testing of Low Dropout PNP Series Linear Voltage Regulators

As demand for high-speed, on-board, digital-processing integrated circuits on spacecraft increases (field-programmable gate arrays and digital signal processors in particular), the need for the next generation point-of-load (POL) regulator becomes a prominent design issue. Shrinking process nodes have resulted in core rails dropping to values close to 1.0 V, drastically reducing margin to standard switching converters or regulators that power digital ICs. The goal of this task is to perform SET characterization of several commercial POL converters, and provide a discussion of the impact of these results to state-of-the-art digital processing IC through laser and heavy ion testing

Single-Event Effect (SEE) Survey of Advanced Reconfigurable Field Programmable Gate Arrays: NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging (NEPP) Program Office of Safety and Mission Assurance

The NEPP Reconfigurable Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) task has been charged to evaluate reconfigurable FPGA technologies for use in space. Under this task, the Xilinx single-event-immune, reconfigurable FPGA (SIRF) XQR5VFX130 device was evaluated for SEE. Additionally, the Altera Stratix-IV and SiliconBlue iCE65 were screened for single-event latchup (SEL).

Single Event Test Methodologies and System Error Rate Analysis for Triple Modular Redundant Field Programmable Gate Arrays

We present a test methodology for estimating system error rates of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) mitigated with Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR). The test methodology is founded in a mathematical model, which is also presented. Accelerator data from 90 nm Xilins Military/Aerospace grade FPGA are shown to fit the model. Fault injection (FI) results are discussed and related to the test data. Design implementation and the corresponding impact of multiple bit upset (MBU) are also discussed.

Mitigation selection and qualification recommendations for Xilinx Virtex, Virtex-II, and Virtex-4 field programmable gate arrays

This work discusses mitigation selection and qualification techniques for Xilinx reconfigurable field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The aim of the paper is to provide readers with a better understanding of the engineering/reliability/project cost relationship that occurs when developing a mitigation strategy for static random access memory (SRAM)-based FPGAs.

Virtex-4VQ dynamic and mitigated single event upset characterization summary

This report is the result of funding by the NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging Program (NEPP) and the combined efforts of members within the Xilinx Radiation Test Consortium (XRTC), sometimes known as the Xilinx Single Event Effects (SEE) Test Consortium. The XRTC is a voluntary association of aerospace entities, including leading aerospace companies, universitie and national laboratories, combining resources to characterize reconfigurable, field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for aerospace applications. Previous publications of Virtex-4 radiation results are for commercial (non-epitaxial) devices; see, for example, Refs. 1–5. A notable exception is Ref. 6, which presents XRTC upset measurements of storage elements in the PowerPC405s in the XQR4VFX60. This work represents a continuation of the efforts reported in the “Virtex-4QV Static SEU Characterization Summary” [7]. The contents of this report describe various Single Event Functional Interrupt (SEFI) and Single Event Upset (SEU) modes seen while dynamically exercising the clocked resources within Virtex-4 devices and the corresponding mitigation techniques related to the aforementioned observed SEFI modes.

VIRTEX-4 VQ static SEU Characterization Summary

This report is the result of the combined efforts of members within the Xilinx Radiation Test Consortium (XRTC), sometimes known as the Xilinx SEE Test Consortium. The XRTC is a voluntary association of aerospace entities, including leading aerospace companies, universities and national laboratories, combining resources to characterize reconfigurable FPGAs for aerospace applications. Previous publications of Virtex-4 radiation results are for commercial (non-epitaxial) devices; see, for example, Refs. 1-4. A notable exception is Ref. 5, which presents XRTC upset measurements of storage elements in the PowerPC405s in the XQR4VFX60. This report of upset susceptibility to heavy ions and protons of the static memory elements in the Virtex-4QV family is a direct parallel to the XRTC report on the thin epitaxial devices in the Virtex-2 family released four years ago.
