A backside illuminated 400 x 400 charge-coupled device imager

Large-area backside illuminated charge-coupled device imagers have been fabricated using double level aluminum transfer electrode technology. Devices with 100 x 160 and 400 x 400 resolution elements have been fabricated using buried channel technology for high charge transfer efficiency. Detailed optical characterization has been performed on these imagers over the temperature range -40 to +24 C and at several operating frequencies between 10 kHz and 1 MHz.

Development of large area CCD imagers

High performance CCD imagers with 800 x 50 resolution elements were fabricated using a coplanar, double polysilicon, electrode system. The imager was developed as a prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of an 800 x 800 array for application to deep space photography where data rates of 10K to the 2nd power and operating temperatures of -40 C are required. The performance is discussed and comparisons made to the existing 400 x 400 imager.

A large imaging array CCD program

Test results on charge coupled device (CCD) imaging arrays (100 x 160 pixel and 400 x 400 pixel) employed as imaging detectors are reported, along with expected low light level (LLL) performance. Reasons for selection of a thinned backside-illuminated buried-channel three-phase CCD variant are indicated. The LLL performance and long storage time capability of the CCD imaging array recommend it for stellar photometry, detection and tracking of faint objects, and other astronomical applications.

Development of CCD imaging sensors for space applications, phase 1

The results of an experimental investigation to develop a large area charge coupled device (CCD) imager for space photography applications are described. Details of the design and processing required to achieve 400 X 400 imagers are presented together with a discussion of the optical characterization techniques developed for this program. A discussion of several aspects of large CCD performance is given with detailed test reports. The areas covered include dark current, uniformity of optical response, square wave amplitude response, spectral responsivity and dynamic range.

Large-area CCD imagers for spacecraft applications

Backside illuminated CCD imagers with 100 x 160 resolution elements have been fabricated using double level metal technology. Detailed study of the optical performance of such arrays has been performed between 24 C and -40 C using data rates from 10 kHz to 1 MHz. A 400 x 400 array is presently being fabricated.
