Improved thermoelectric performance of α- and β- Cu 2 Se through suppression of hole density using extrinsic copper vacancies

Modulating Cu + ion disorder in Cu 2 Se can enable control over the polymorphism and the carrier density leading to enhanced thermoelectric properties for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se. Here we report that the incorporation of Cr 3+ into the Cu 2 Se crystal lattice facilitates the stabilization of α-Cu 2 Se at 300 K leading to a large (~140%) reduction in the carrier density both below and above the phase transition. This is attributed to the reduction in the density of intrinsic copper interstitials (Cu$^{•}_{i}$) within the Cu (2-δ-λ) (Cr$^{··}_{Cu}$)λ(V$^{'}_{Cu}$)δ(Cu$^{π}_{i}$) δ-2λ (h • ) δ-2λ Se crystal lattice. Such optimization of the carrier density led to a large (63%) increase in the thermopower and a drastic (46%) reduction in the total thermal conductivity for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se matrices. Consequently, a significant enhancement of the thermoelectric performance is observed in the entire temperature range from 300 K to 773 K. This results in high average ZT values for both α-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.60) and β-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.97), which paves the way for both near room temperature and high temperatures applications. Furthermore, this work provides a new approach to optimize the thermoelectric performance of Cu 2 Se-based materials by leveraging the interaction between mobile intrinsic Cu$^{·}_{i}$ and extrinsic V$^{'}_{Cu}$ to suppress the hole density.

Influence of local symmetry on lattice dynamics coupled to topological surface states

Herein we investigate coupled electron-lattice dynamics in the topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 with time-resolved photoemission and time-resolved x-ray diffraction. It is well established that coherent phonons can be launched by optical excitation, but selection rules generally restrict these modes to zone-center wave vectors and Raman-active branches. We find that the topological surface state couples to additional modes, including a continuum of surface-projected bulk modes from both Raman and infrared branches, with possible contributions from surface-localized modes when they exist. Our calculations show that this surface vibrational spectrum occurs naturally as a consequence of the translational and inversion symmetries broken at the surface, without requiring the splitting-off of surface-localized phonon modes. The generality of this result suggests that coherent phonon spectra are useful by providing unique fingerprints for identifying surface states in more controversial materials. These effects may also expand the phase space for tailoring surface state wave functions via ultrafast optical excitation.

Weak Electron–Phonon Coupling and Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in n-type PbTe–Cu 2 Se via Dynamic Phase Conversion

This study investigates Ga-doped n-type PbTe thermoelectric materials and the dynamic phase conversion process of the second phases via Cu 2 Se alloying. Introducing Cu 2 Se enhances its electrical transport properties while reducing its lattice thermal conductivity (κlat) via weak electron–phonon coupling. Additionally, Cu 2 Te and CuGa(Te/Se) 2 (tetragonal phase) nanocrystals precipitate during the alloying process, resulting in Te vacancies and interstitial Cu in the PbTe matrix. At room temperature, Te vacancies and interstitial Cu atoms serve as n-type dopants, increasing the carrier concentration and electrical conductivity from ≈1.18 × 10 19 cm –3 and ≈1870 S cm –1 to ≈2.26 × 10 19 cm –3 and ≈3029 S cm –1 , respectively. With increasing temperature, the sample exhibits a dynamic change in Cu 2 Te content and the generation of a new phase of CuGa(Te/Se) 2 (cubic phase), strengthening the phonon scattering and obtaining an ultralow k lat . Pb 0.975 Ga 0.025 Te-3%CuSe exhibits a maximum figure of merit of ≈1.63 at 823 K, making it promising for intermediate-temperature device applications.

Unusual electronic transport in (1 - x )Cu 2 Se-( x )CuInSe 2 hierarchical composites

The ability to control the relative density of electronic point defects as well as their energy distribution in semiconductors could afford a systematic modulation of their electronic, optical, and optoelectronic properties. Using a model binary hybrid system Cu 2 Se–CuInSe 2 , we have investigated the correlation between phase composition, microstructure, and electronic transport behavior in the synthesized composites. We found that both Cu 2 Se and CuInSe 2 phases coexist at multiple length scales, ranging from sub-ten nanometer to several micrometers, leading to the formation of a hybrid hierarchical microstructure. Astonishingly, the electronic phase diagram of the (1 - x)Cu 2 Se–(x)CuInSe 2 (15% ≤ x ≤ 100%) hierarchical composites remarkably deviates from the trend normally expected for composites between a heavily doped semiconductor (Cu 2 Se) and a poorly conducting phase (CuInSe 2 ). A sudden 3-fold increase in the electrical conductivity and carrier concentration along with a marginal increase in the carrier mobility is observed for composites at the vicinity of equimolar composition (48% ≤ x ≤ 52%). The carrier concentration increases from ~1.5 × 10 20 cm -3 for the composites with x ≤ 45% to 5.0 × 10 20 cm -3 for x = 50%, and remains constant at 4.5 × 10 20 cm -3 with x value in the range of 52% < x ≤ 90%, then quickly drops to 8 × 10 18 cm -3 for pristine CuInSe 2 phase (x = 100%). The atypical electronic behavior was rationalized in the light of the formation of an inter-band (IB) within the band gap, which arises from the hybridization of native electronic point defects from both Cu 2 Se and CuInSe 2 phases in the resulting hierarchical composites. The result points to a new strategy to modulate the electronic structure of semiconductor composites to maximize interaction and coupling between two fundamentally contrasting properties enabling access to electronic hybrid systems with potential applications as interactive and stimuli-responsive multifunctional materials.

Valence Disproportionation of GeS in the PbS Matrix Forms Pb 5 Ge 5 S 12 Inclusions with Conduction Band Alignment Leading to High n-Type Thermoelectric Performance

Converting waste heat into useful electricity using solid-state thermoelectrics has a potential for enormous global energy savings. Lead chalcogenides are among the most prominent thermoelectric materials, whose performance decreases with an increase in chalcogen amounts (e.g., PbTe>PbSe>PbS). Herein, we demonstrate the simultaneous optimization of the electrical and thermal transport properties of PbS-based compounds by alloying with GeS. The addition of GeS triggers a complex cascade of beneficial events as follows: Ge 2+ substitution in Pb 2+ and discordant off-center behavior; formation of Pb 5 Ge 5 S 12 as stable second phase inclusions through valence disproportionation of Ge 2+ to Ge0 and Ge 4+ . PbS and Pb 5 Ge 5 S 12 exhibit good conduction band energy alignment that preserves the high electron mobility; the formation of Pb 5 Ge 5 S 12 increases the electron carrier concentration by introducing S vacancies. Sb doping as the electron donor produces a large power factor and low lattice thermal conductivity (κ lat ) of ~0.61 Wm -1 K -1 . The highest performance was obtained for the 14% GeS-alloyed samples, which exhibited an increased room temperature electron mobility of ~121 cm 2 V -1 s -1 for 3 × 10 19 cm -3 carrier density, and a ZT, of 1.32 at 923 K. This is ~ 55% greater that the corresponding Sb-doped PbS sample and is one of the highest reported for the n-type PbS system. Moreover, the average ZT (ZT avg ) of ~0.76 from 400 to 923 K is the highest for PbS-based systems.

Extraordinary role of Zn in enhancing thermoelectric performance of Ga-doped n-type PbTe

Although Ga doping can weaken the electron phonon coupling in n-type PbTe, Ga-doped PbTe has a relatively low carrier concentration (n) and high lattice thermal conductivity (κ lat ), resulting in a lower figure of merit (ZT) compared with those of other top-performing n-type PbTe-based thermoelectric materials. Herein, we report the extraordinary role of Zn in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of Ga-doped PbTe. It is discovered that Zn can simultaneously improve the electronic transport properties and decrease the κlat of Ga-doped PbTe, thereby affording a record high ZT avg ~ 1.26 at 400–873 K, with a maximum ZT value of 1.55 at 723 K. The isoelectronic substitution of Zn for Pb in Ga-doped PbTe increases the electrical conductivity and n by inducing the nucleation and growth of Ga 2 Te 3 in the second phase. The formation of Ga 2 Te 3 results in nonstoichiometry and Te deficiency in the PbTe matrix, which increases the number of electron carriers. Additionally, discordant Zn and Ga atoms with displacing off-center from the ideal octahedral positions, as well as Ga 2 Te 3 nanocrystals ranging from 30 to 200 nm coherently embedded into the PbTe matrix effectively weaken the phonon modes and scatter heat-carrying phonons, resulting in a significant reduction in κ lat .

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity, Multiband Electronic Structure and High Thermoelectric Figure of Merit in TlCuSe

The entanglement of lattice thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient complicates the process of optimizing thermoelectric performance in most thermoelectric materials. Semiconductors with ultralow lattice thermal conductivities and high power factors at the same time are scarce but fundamentally interesting and practically important for energy conversion. In this work, an intrinsic p-type semiconductor TlCuSe that has an intrinsically ultralow thermal conductivity (0.25 W m -1 K -1 ), a high power factor (11.6 μ W cm -1 K -2 ), and a high figure of merit, ZT (1.9) at 643 K is described. The weak chemical bonds, originating from the filled antibonding orbitals p-d* within the edge-sharing CuSe 4 tetrahedra and long Tl-Se bonds in the PbClF-type structure, in conjunction with the large atomic mass of Tl lead to an ultralow sound velocity. Strong anharmonicity, coming from Tl + lone-pair electrons, boosts phonon-phonon scattering rates and further suppresses lattice thermal conductivity. The multiband character of the valence band structure contributing to power factor enhancement benefits from the lone-pair electrons of Tl + as well, which modify the orbital character of the valence bands, and pushes the valence band maximum off the Gamma-point, increasing the band degeneracy. The results provide new insight on the rational design of thermoelectric materials.

Measurements of nonequilibrium interatomic forces using time-domain x-ray scattering

Here, we demonstrate an experimental approach to determining the excited-state interatomic forces using femtosecond x-ray pulses from an x-ray free-electron laser. We determine experimentally the excited-state interatomic forces that connect photoexcited carriers to the nonequilibrium lattice dynamics in the prototypical Peierls-distorted material, bismuth. The forces are obtained by a constrained least-squares fit of a pairwise interatomic force model to the excited-state phonon dispersion relation as measured by the time- and momentum-resolved x-ray diffuse scattering. We find that photoexcited carriers weaken predominantly the nearest-neighbor forces, which drives the measured softening of the transverse acoustic modes throughout the Brillouin zone as well as the zone-center A 1g optical mode. This demonstrates a bond-selective approach to measuring electron-phonon coupling relevant to a broad range of photoinduced phase transitions and transient light-driven states in quantum materials.

Paramagnon heat capacity in (Ti,Zr,Hf)NiFe x NiSn half-Heusler composites

As a measure of the temperature response of the energy of matter, the heat capacity $C_p$ is a fundamental thermodynamic property. Its dependence on magnetic field, especially at low temperatures, yields insight into the electronic, phononic, and magnetic states of condensed matter. Here, we present a set of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic (Ti, Zr, Hf)NiFe x Sn half-Heusler composites that exhibit low-field (<3 T) maxima in $C_p$ and higher-field magnetic quenching of the heat capacity at temperatures below 10 K. Using rigorous statistical analysis, we attribute the effect to the existence of paramagnons within the compounds. To explain the lowest-temperature (<4 K), low-field declines in $C_p$, we derive a magnon model up to fourth order in dispersion. While the combined paramagnon and magnon model matches the data well, the fit parameters are significantly underdetermined. Further, we provide a qualitative explanation of the secondary effect based on superconducting phases within the composites. Overall, our work highlights the insight of field-dependent heat capacity studies at fixed temperatures that cannot be as easily gleaned from the temperature-dependent heat capacity at fixed magnetic fields.

Strong Valence Band Convergence to Enhance Thermoelectric Performance in PbSe with Two Chemically Independent Controls

Abstract We present an effective approach to favorably modify the electronic structure of PbSe using Ag doping coupled with SrSe or BaSe alloying. The Ag 4d states make a contribution to in the top of the heavy hole valence band and raise its energy. The Sr and Ba atoms diminish the contribution of Pb 6s 2 states and decrease the energy of the light hole valence band. This electronic structure modification increases the density‐of‐states effective mass, and strongly enhances the thermoelectric performance. Moreover, the Ag‐rich nanoscale precipitates, discordant Ag atoms, and Pb/Sr, Pb/Ba point defects in the PbSe matrix work together to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity, resulting a record high average ZT avg of around 0.86 over 400–923 K.

Lone-Electron-Pair Micelles Strengthen Bond Anharmonicity in MnPb16Sb14S38 Complex Sulfosalt Leading to Ultra-Low Thermal Conductivity

Designing crystalline solids in which intrinsic extremely low lattice thermal conductivity mainly arises from its unique bonding nature rather than structure complexity and/or atomic disorder could promote thermal energy manipulation and utilization for applications ranging from thermoelectric energy conversion to thermal barrier coatings. Here, we report an extremely low lattice thermal conductivity of ~0.34 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K in the new complex sulfosalt MnPb16Sb14S38. We attribute the ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity to a synergistic combination of scattering mechanisms involving (1) strong bond anharmonicity in various structural building units, owing to the presence of stereoactive lone-electron-pair (LEP) micelles, and (2) phonon scattering at the interfaces between building units of increasing size and complexity. Remarkably, low-temperature heat capacity measurement revealed a Cp value of 0.206 J g-1 K-1 at T > 300 K, which is 22% lower than the Dulong-Petit value (0.274 J g-1 K-1). Further analysis of the Cp data and sound velocity (ν = 1834 m/s) measurement yielded Debye temperature values of 161 K and 187 K, respectively. Here, the resulting Grüneisen parameter, γ = 1.65, further supports strong bond anharmonicity as the dominant mechanism responsible for the observed extremely low lattice thermal conductivity.
