Ultrasound Interim cyber-physical research evaluation

Recent events have presented Medical Practitioners with concerns about safety and privacy implications associated with GE’s VScan MIot Ultrasound Device. Concerns relate to the devices potential risk to broadcast location data that can pose serious risks to device users and patients. This report was commission in collaboration with Augusta University to determine if device concerns pose real threat to operators and patients. In effort to ensure all potential threat vectors are targeted, the initial step was to analyze the supply chain. Here the devices are CT scanned to look for any hardware anomalies that could present threat vectors to users of these devices. (See SRNL-STI-2024-00225 for detailed analysis). No anomalies were found associated with the hardware utilized within the GE VScan Air.

Reverse Engineering of Medical Devices for Innovation and Advancement in Healthcare

Medical cybersecurity research addresses the critical intersection of healthcare and digital security. As medical devices expand and become increasingly interconnected, the healthcare sector is poised to become a primary target for cyber warfare. This project aims to mitigate the risks associated with a field that often underestimates the importance of cybersecurity.

Ultrasound preliminary cyber-physical evaluation

In this assessment, we focused on identifying unwanted RF emissions from the subject devices. This consisted of two major approaches: 1) Monitor for emitted RF during operation and ensure it is within expected bounds. 2) Inspect circuit board construction for any geometry or design patterns that could lead to RF emissions, whether intentional or unintentional. These patterns include: a) Single-ended PCB traces that could operate as an antenna. b) Insufficient shielding around typically “noisy” components such as switching power supplies. c) Free-hanging high-speed signal wires with no shielding that could emit RF. Suspicious components and design patterns were given a plausible reason to be included in the design. Any suspicious components or patterns warranted reason for deeper investigation. After more in-depth analysis no components were found to be intentionally malicious or had unexpected functionality.
