Monitoring Lignin Content in Paper Processing

Feedstock and finished pulp analyzed and controlled automatically. System acquires samples from feed hopper, digestor, and blow tank. Sample homogenized, washed, and dried while conveyed to flash pyrolyzer. In pyrolyzer material converted into basic constituent, mostly compounds of molecular weight less than 200.

Automated mass spectrometer/analysis system: A concept

System performs rapid multiple analyses of entire compound classes or individual compounds on small amounts of sample and reagent. Method will allow screening of large populations for metabolic disorders and establishment of effective-but-safe levels of therapeutic drugs in body fluids and tissues.

Negative ion spectrometry for detecting nitrated explosives

Ionization procedure is modified to produce mainly negative ions by electron capture. Peaks of negative ions are monitored conventionally. Nitrated organic materials could be identified directly from sample sniff inlet stream by suitably modified mass spectrometer because of unique electronegativity which nitro group imparts to organic material.

A search for porphyrin biomarkers in Nonesuch Shale and extraterrestrial samples.

An organic solvent extract of billion year old Nonesuch Shale was examined for porphyrins by means of fluorometry and high resolution mass spectrometry. It appears to contain at least three or more classes of porphyrins, one similar to tetraphenyl porphin and the others more complex. Many are apparently chelated with copper, nickel, zinc, iron and vanadyl and are highly aromatic. We have also examined the extracts of Apollo 11, 12 and 14 surface fines for porphyrins by spectrophotofluorometry, but we found none.
