Titanium/beryllium laminates - Fabrication, mechanical properties, and potential aerospace applications

The paper describes an investigation to assess the fabricability, mechanical properties, and possible aerospace applications of adhesively-bonded titanium/beryllium Tiber laminates. The results of the investigation indicate that structural laminates can be made which have: a modulus of elasticity comparable to steel, fracture strength comparable to the yield strength of titanium, density comparable to aluminum, impact resistance comparable to titanium, and little or no notch sensitivity. These laminates can have stiffness and weight advantages over other materials, including advanced fiber composites, in some aerospace applications where buckling resistance, vibration frequencies, and weight considerations control the design.

Effects of moisture profiles and laminate configuration on the hygro stress in advanced composites

A theoretical investigation was performed using a recently developed integrated theory for predicting the hygrothermomechanical response to investigate the effects of three different moisture profiles on the ply hygro stresses in angleplied laminates. The moisture profiles were linear, parabolic and hyperbolic varying from 1 percent at the exposed ply to '0' percent in the protected ply. The angleplied laminates were of two generic configurations. The results obtained are summarized graphically to illustrate the effects of both moisture profile and laminate configuration.

Mechanical behavior and fracture characteristics of off-axis fiber composites. 1: Experimental investigation

The mechanical behavior, fracture surfaces, and fracture modes of unidirectional high-modulus graphite-fiber/epoxy composites subjected to off-axis tensile loads were investigated experimentally. The investigation included the generation of stress-strain-to-fracture data and scanning electron microscope studies of the fractured surfaces. The results led to the identification of fracture modes and distinct fracture surface characteristics for off-axis tensile loading. The results also led to the formulation of critical for identifying and characterizing these fracture modes and their associated fracture surfaces. The results presented and discussed herein were used in the theoretical investigation and comparisons described in Part 2. These results should also provide a good foundation for identifying, characterizing, and quantifying fracture modes in both off-axis and angle-plied laminates.

Fracture surface characteristics of off-axis composites

The fracture surface characteristics of off-axis high-modulus graphite-fiber/epoxy composite specimens were studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The specimens were subjected to tensile loading at various angles (0-90 deg) to the fiber direction. SEM photomicrographs of the fractured surfaces revealed three different load angle regions with distinct fracture characteristics. Based on these revelations, criteria were established which can be used to characterize fracture surfaces with respect to a predominant 'single-stress' fracture mode.

An integrated theory for predicting the hydrothermomechanical response of advanced composite structural components

A theory is developed for predicting the hydrothermomechanical response of advanced composite structural components. The combined hydrothermal effects on the mechanical properties of unidirectional composites loaded along the material axis and off-axis, and of angleplied laminates are also evaluated. The materials investigated consist of neat PR-288 epoxy matrix resin and an AS-type graphite fiber/PR-288 resin unidirectional composite.

Hybrid composite laminate structures

An invention which relates to laminate structures and specifically to essentially anisotropic fiber composite laminates is described. Metal foils are selectively disposed within the laminate to produce increased resistance to high velocity impact, fracture, surface erosion, and other stresses within the laminate.

10-deg off-axis test for shear properties in fiber composites

A combined theoretical and experimental investigation was conducted to assess the suitability of the 10-deg off-axis tensile test specimen for the intralaminar shear characterization of unidirectional composites. Composite mechanics, a combined-stress failure criterion, and a finite-element analysis were used to determine theoretically the stress-strain variation across the specimen width and the relative stress and strain magnitudes at the 10-deg plane. Strain gages were employed to measure the strain variation across the specimen width at specimen midlength and near the end tabs. Specimens from Mod-I/epoxy, T-300/epoxy, and S-glass/epoxy were used in the experimental program. It was found that the 10-deg off-axis tensile test specimen is suitable for intralaminar shear characterization, and it is recommended that it should be considered as a possible standard test specimen for such a characterization.

Doubly-curved variable-thickness isoparametric heterogeneous finite element

This paper describes an element streamlined for the analysis of doubly-curved, variable-thickness structural components and illustrates its effective application to vibration and static problems. The element is isoparametric, doubly-curved, thin-shell and triangular with variable thickness and accounts for anisotropic, inhomogeneous elastic material behavior. The element has six nodes (three corner and three mid-side) with five degrees-of-freedom (DOF) per node - three translations and two rotations. Quadratic isoparametric interpolation polynomials are used to express the element geometry and displacement variables in terms of corresponding nodal variables.

Composite laminate warpage

Set of simplified equations predicts warpage that often occurs upon removal from fabrication mold. Equations predict corner deflection and are based upon micromechanics and macromechanics of composites, as well as laminate theory. Factors considered include ply misorientation, fiber migration, and void/volume ratio nonuniformity.

Hybrid composites - State-of-the-art review: Analysis, design, application and fabrication

The review covers hybrid composites that consist of two or more different types of fibers (or fiber composites) in a frequently repeated pattern in a laminate. The fibers considered are boron, graphite, glass, and Kevlar; the resins considered include mostly structural epoxies, with some utilization of polyimides and thermoplastics. The review shows that considerable data have been generated for the tensile strength properties, as well as tensile and thermal fatigue, of interply hybrids, and for the impact resistance of interply and intraply hybrids. The rule of mixtures appears to be adequate for predicting longitudinal and transverse mechanical properties of unidirectional interply hybrids, and linear laminate theory appears to be adequate for predicting the elastic response of hybrids.

Static behavior and the effects of thermal cycling in hybrid laminates

Static stiffness, strength and ultimate strain after thermal cycling were investigated for graphite/Kevlar 49/epoxy and graphite/S-glass/epoxy angle-ply laminates. Tensile stress-strain curves to failure and uniaxial tensile properties were determined, and theoretical predictions of modulus, Poisson's ratio and ultimate strain, based on linear lamination theory, constituent ply properties and measured strength, were made. No significant influence on tensile stress properties due to stacking sequence variations was observed. In general, specimens containing two 0-degree Kevlar or S-glass plies were found to behave linearly to failure, while specimens containing 4 0-degree Kevlar or S-glass plies showed some nonlinear behavior.

NASTRAN use for cyclic response and fatigue analysis of wind turbing towers

A procedure is described which uses NASTRAN coupled with fatigue criteria via a postprocessor to determine the cyclic response and to assess the fatigue resistance (fatigue life) of wind turbine generator towers. The cyclic loads to which the tower may be subjected are entered either in a quasi-static approach though static load subcases (Rigid Format 1) or through the direct dynamic response (Rigid Format 9) features of NASTRAN. The fatigue criteria are applied to NASTRAN output data from either rigid format through an externally written user program embedded in a postprocessor.

An Integrated Theory for Predicting the Hydrothermomechanical Response of Advanced Composite Structural Components

An integrated theory is developed for predicting the hydrothermomechanical (HDTM) response of fiber composite components. The integrated theory is based on a combined theoretical and experimental investigation. In addition to predicting the HDTM response of components, the theory is structured to assess the combined hydrothermal effects on the mechanical properties of unidirectional composites loaded along the material axis and off-axis, and those of angleplied laminates. The theory developed predicts values which are in good agreement with measured data at the micromechanics, macromechanics, laminate analysis and structural analysis levels.
