Effect of porous transport layer properties on the anode electrode in anion exchange membrane electrolyzers

Anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMELs) have recently received significant attention due to their potential advantages over existing commercial water electrolysis technologies. However, AEM electrolyzers have not yet met performance and durability targets. One of the critical components in achieving high AEMEL performance is the porous transport layer (PTL) which serves many critical functions in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrode. In this study, several OER PTL attributes were investigated, including: material of construction, fabrication method, feature size, porosity/density, and thickness. It was found that higher porosity helped facilitate multiphase (O 2 , H 2 O, etc.) transport; however, as the porosity increased, the catalyst layer adhesion to the PTL decreased, the contact resistance with the bipolar plate increased and the cell operating voltage increased. It was found that nickel-based PTLs allowed for lower operating voltages than similarly-structured stainless steel PTLs. Improved operating voltages were achieved with both fiber felts and sintered structures by porosity optimization. Furthermore, an increase in thickness did not affect transient voltage response, however, it had a negative effect on performance stability. As a result, the experimental findings presented here provide important insights for development of PTL materials and structures for efficient and low-cost water electrolysis.

Stable, high-performing bifunctional electrodes for anion exchange membrane-based unitized regenerative fuel cells

Anion exchange membrane unitized regenerative fuel cells (AEM-URFCs) are a promising technology for energy storage and electricity production; however, their efficiency is limited by the kinetics of the bifunctional oxygen electrode (BOE) where the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) occur. A particular concern when designing the BOE is that the OER and ORR have differing catalytic requirements, which make it challenging to develop effective bifunctional electrocatalysts with single active sites. In this study, we focus on advancing the BOE performance using Pt-IrO x and Pt-NiCoO x electrocatalysts. Here, single-layer and dual-layer Pt-IrO x BOEs were made, with the dual-layer electrode leading to improved performance due to efficient catalyst utilization in both modes. Using the dual-layer oxygen electrode paired with a PtRu/C hydrogen electrode, a round trip efficiency (RTE) as high as 50% (62 %iR-free) was achieved at 500 mA/cm 2 and operation for more than 24 h, which included five one-hour-long H 2 generation and consumption cycles followed by one eight-hour-long cycle. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest performance for AEM-URFCs reported to date. Lastly, the approach is extended to electrodes with a Pt loading of 0.5 mg/cm 2 and the IrO x substituted by NiCoO x .

High-performance SO 2 -depolarized electrolysis cell using advanced polymer electrolyte membranes

Three different proton conducting polymeric membrane materials (Nafion® 115, Nafion® 212, and sulfonated Diels-Alder polyphenylene [SDAPP]) were evaluated for use in SO 2 -depolarized electrolyzers for the production of hydrogen via the hybrid sulfur cycle. Their performance was measured using different water feed strategies to minimize overpotential losses while maintaining high product acid concentration. Both thin membranes (Nafion® 212 and SDAPP) showed performance superior to that of the thicker Nafion® 115. Here, the SDAPP membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performed well at higher acid concentrations, maintaining low ohmic and kinetic overpotentials. Finally, short-term (100-h) stability tests under constant current conditions showed minimal degradation for the SDAPP and Nafion® 212 MEAs. SDAPP MEA performance approached the targets needed to make the hybrid sulfur cycle a competitive process for hydrogen production (product acid concentration ≥65 wt% H 2 SO 4 at ≤ 0.6-V cell potential and ≥0.5 A-cm –2 current density).
