A New Type of Hybrid Copper Iodide as Nontoxic and Ultrastable LED Emissive Layer Material

Perovskite-based light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are promising candidates for next-generation solid-state lighting and display technologies. However, all current high-performance PeLEDs contain a toxic element (lead) and suffer from relatively low stability. Herein, we report a new type of lead-free LED using low-cost, eco-friendly, and robust copper(I) iodide hybrid material as the emissive layer (EML). Specifically, they are composed of copper iodide chains and organic ligands through ionic and coordinate bonds. Their remarkable stability and solution processability stem from this unique multifold bonding feature. High-quality thin films of 1D-Cu 4 I 6 (bttmp) 2 were fabricated by a simple, one-step spin-coating process. They exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yield (91%) and long-term air stability (>2000 h). An EQE of 5.02% was achieved for a prototype yellow LED using 1D-Cu 4 I 6 (bttmp) 2 EML. Its half-lifetime of 35.5 h obtained in open air outperforms that of most PeLEDs reported to date. Finally, this work opens a new direction for making LEDs based on ecofriendly and robust hybrid materials.

Family of Robust and Strongly Luminescent CuI-Based Hybrid Networks Made of Ionic and Dative Bonds

The CuI-derived inorganic–organic hybrid compounds are considered as promising phosphors for the lighting industry. Herein, exploiting N-monoalkylated hexaminium salts, [R-HMTA]X (R = Me, Et, Pr, and propargyl; X = Cl and I), as multibridging ligands, we have designed and synthesized a unique class of one-dimensional and two-dimensional hybrid CuI-materials. The reactions of these salts with CuI give rise to All-in-One (AIO) type compounds combining ionic and dative bonds between inorganic and organic components. The latter is formed by structurally unique inorganic [Cu x I y ] (y–x)– clusters, chains, or sheets interconnected through [R-HMTA] + cations via multiple Cu–N bonds. The so-designed compounds at ambient temperature exhibit tunable luminescence spanning from deep blue to red color (λ em = 430–625 nm) with microsecond lifetimes and the quantum efficiency of up to 78%. Remarkably, the AIO materials feature nontrivial excitation- (ED) and temperature-dependent (TD) luminescence, allowing their emission color to be finely adjusted from deep blue to red through changing the excitation wavelength and/or temperature. Based on the TD emission spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, a possible mechanism of the luminescence has been proposed. In conclusion, the very interesting luminescence characteristics coupled with good thermal and photostability render these AIO hybrid materials possible candidates for applications in energy-efficient lighting devices.

Perovskite Solar Cells with Enhanced Fill Factors Using Polymer-Capped Solvent Annealing

Despite huge improvements in power conversion efficiencies of perovskite solar cells, the technology is still limited by fill factors at around 80%. In this work, we report perovskite solar cells having exceptionally high fill factors of 85% and enhanced open-circuit voltage without sacrificing short-circuit current through a polymer-capped solvent-annealing process assisted by a hot air blower. Additionally, during the solvent-annealing, the perovskite surface flattens and the perovskite grains agglomerate into micrometer-sized clusters having enlarged α-phase crystallites, while the δ-phase simultaneously disappears. The optimized structure reduces energetic disorder and trap-assisted recombination in the perovskite layer, resulting in an enhanced efficiency from 18.2% to 19.8% and improved device lifetime. Our results provide a pathway to increase the device efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells, and have the potential to stimulate research on scalable poly-crystal perovskite layer fabrication in optoelectronic devices.

Structural distortion and electron redistribution in dual-emitting gold nanoclusters

Deciphering the complicated excited-state process is critical for the development of luminescent materials with controllable emissions in different applications. Here we report the emergence of a photo-induced structural distortion accompanied by an electron redistribution in a series of gold nanoclusters. Such unexpected slow process of excited-state transformation results in near-infrared dual emission with extended photoluminescent lifetime. We demonstrate that this dual emission exhibits highly sensitive and ratiometric response to solvent polarity, viscosity, temperature and pressure. Thus, a versatile luminescent nano-sensor for multiple environmental parameters is developed based on this strategy. Furthermore, we fully unravel the atomic-scale structural origin of this unexpected excited-state transformation, and demonstrate control over the transition dynamics by tailoring the bi-tetrahedral core structures of gold nanoclusters. Overall, this work provides a substantial advance in the excited-state physical chemistry of luminescent nanoclusters and a general strategy for the rational design of next-generation nano-probes, sensors and switches.

Enhancing Chemical Stability and Suppressing Ion Migration in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Perovskite Solar Cells via Direct Backbone Attachment of Polyesters on Grain Boundaries

Organic–inorganic halide perovskites feature excellent optoelectronic properties but poor chemical stability. While passivating perovskite grain boundary (GB) by polymers shows prospects on long-term performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), its detailed impact on the ion migration phenomenon, which largely deteriorates the PSC stability, remains less probed. In this work, we introduce a new polar polymer, polycaprolactone (PCL), to passivate GBs of methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite with only 1–2 polymer monolayers via direct backbone attachment. The PSCs with passivated MAPbI 3 , using a classic but less stable Spiro-OMeTAD (2,2',7,7'-tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9'-spirobifluorene) hole transport layer (HTL), exhibit improved power conversion efficiencies up to 20.1%, with 90% of the initial PCE being preserved after 400 h ambient storage, and 80% even after 100 h, 85 °C aging. The improved PSC stability indicates critical roles of PCL GB passivation in retarding moisture-induced decomposition and suppressing ion migration within the perovskite. Furthermore, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry reveals that I– ions can actively migrate into the electrode, HTL, and their interface in nonpassivated PSCs, even without an externally applied electric field, while such migration is significantly mitigated in PCL-passivated PSCs. This effective GB passivation by PCL suggests an important potential of polymer additives toward the development of stable high-performance PSCs.

Blending Ionic and Coordinate Bonds in Hybrid Semiconductor Materials: A General Approach toward Robust and Solution-Processable Covalent/Coordinate Network Structures

Inorganic semiconductor materials are best known for their superior physical properties, as well as their structural rigidity and stability. However, the poor solubility and solution-processability of these covalently bonded network structures has long been a serious drawback that limits their use in many important applications. Here, we present a unique and general approach to synthesize robust, solution-processable, and highly luminescent hybrid materials built on periodic and infinite inorganic modules. Structure analysis confirms that all compounds are composed of one-dimensional anionic chains of copper iodide (Cu m I m+2 2- ) coordinated to cationic organic ligands via Cu-N bonds. The choice of ligands plays an important role in the coordination mode (μ 1 -MC or μ 2 -DC) and Cu-N bond strength. Greatly suppressed nonradiative decay is achieved for the μ 2 -DC structures. Record high quantum yields of 85% (λ ex = 360 nm) and 76% (λ ex = 450 nm) are obtained for an orange-emitting 1D-Cu 4 I 6 (L 6 ). Temperature dependent PL measurements suggest that both phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence contribute to the emission of these 1D-AIO compounds, and that the extent of nonradiative decay of the μ 2 -DC structures is much less than that of the μ1 -DC structures. More significantly, all compounds are remarkably soluble in polar aprotic solvents, distinctly different from previously reported CuI based hybrid materials made of charge-neutral Cu m X m (X = Cl, Br, I), which are totally insoluble in all common solvents. Finally, the greatly enhanced solubility is a result of incorporation of ionic bonds into extended covalent/coordinate network structures, making it possible to fabricate large scale thin films by solution processes
