Short-range magnetic correlations in quasicrystalline i -Tb-Cd

Here, we report on elastic and inelastic neutron scattering from single-grain isotopically enriched samples to elucidate the local magnetic correlations between Tb 3+ moments in quasicrystalline i -Tb-Cd. The inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the crystalline electric field excitations demonstrated that the Tb 3+ moments are directed primarily along the local fivefold axes of the Tsai-type cluster as was found for the TbCd 6 approximant phase. Based on the inelastic measurements, we consider a simple Ising-type model for the moment configurations on a single Tb 3+ icosahedron and enumerate the lowest energy moment configurations. We then calculate the diffuse scattering from these configurations and compare with the experimental magnetic diffuse scattering measurements to identify the most likely single cluster moment configurations and find reasonable agreement between the broad features observed in our scattering simulations. We further use a heuristic glass model as well as large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations of a multicluster model to consider the role of higher-order (longer-range) intercluster correlations for magnetic frustration and the magnetic scattering.

Vibrational response and temperature of shock-compressed Pt: In situ extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements to 325 GPa

Single pulse (~100 ps duration) extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements were obtained in laser shocked Pt to examine atomic vibrational properties and to determine temperatures for shock pressures from 72-325 GPa. Pt x-ray absorption spectra were recorded while a planar shock wave was propagating through the Pt sample. The absorption spectrum corresponding to the shocked Pt was obtained by subtracting the ambient Pt contribution from the measured absorption spectrum. Fits to the shocked state EXAFS data provided Pt lattice parameters consistent with the known Pt Hugoniot and the mean squared relative displacements (MSRDs) for nearest neighbor Pt atoms. Pt temperatures in the shocked state, estimated from the MSRDs using the correlated Debye model and correlated Einstein models, were consistent with both the Hugoniot temperatures calculated by integration along the Hugoniot and with the Hugoniot temperatures from published first-principles calculations. However, the agreement between the Hugoniot temperatures from EXAFS measurements and the calculated Hugoniot temperatures is not as good above 200 GPa, likely due to anharmonic effects. Furthermore, the present results demonstrate that single-pulse synchrotron EXAFS measurements in laser-shocked solids are useful for quantitative temperature determination and for examination of vibrational properties, including anharmonicity, at extreme pressure-temperature conditions.

Magnetization reversal driven by electron localization-delocalization crossover in the inverse spinel Co 2 VO 4

Neutron diffraction, magnetization, and muon spin relaxation measurements, supplemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to unravel temperature-driven magnetization reversal in inverse spinel Co 2 VO 4 . All measurements show a second-order magnetic phase transition at T C = 168 K to a collinear ferrimagnetic phase. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal two antiparallel ferromagnetic (FM) sublattices, belonging to magnetic ions on two distinct crystal lattice sites, where the relative balance between the two sublattices determine the net FM moment in the unit cell. As the evolution of the ordered moment with temperature differs between the two sublattices, the net magnetic moment reaches a maximum at T NC = 138 K and reverses its sign at T MR = 65 K. The DFT results suggest that the underlying microscopic mechanism for the reversal is a delocalization of the unfilled 3d -shell electrons on one sublattice just below T C , followed by a gradual localization as the temperature is lowered. Furthermore, this delocalized-localized crossover is supported by muon spectroscopy results, as strong T 1 relaxation observed below T C indicates fluctuating internal fields.

Detonation-induced transformation of graphite to hexagonal diamond

In this work, we explore the structural evolution of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) under detonation-induced shock conditions using in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction in the ns timescale. We observe the formation of hexagonal diamond (lonsdaleite) at pressures above 50 GPa, in qualitative agreement with recent gas gun experiments. First-principles density functional calculations reveal that under uniaxial compression, the energy barrier for the transition toward hexagonal diamond is lower than that for cubic diamond. Finally, no indication of cubic diamond formation was observed up to >70 GPa.

Single-pulse (100 ps) extended x-ray absorption fine structure capability at the Dynamic Compression Sector

Determining real-time changes in the local atomistic order is important for a mechanistic understanding of shock wave induced structural and chemical changes. However, the single event and short duration (nanosecond times) nature of shock experiments pose challenges in obtaining Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) measurements - typically used for monitoring local order changes. Here, we report on a new single pulse (~100 ps duration) transmission geometry EXAFS capability for use in laser shock-compression experiments at the Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS), Advanced Photon Source. We used a flat plate of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) as the spectrometer element to energy disperse x-rays transmitted through the sample. It provided high efficiency with approximately 15% of the x-rays incident on the HOPG reaching an x-ray area detector with high quantum efficiency. This combination resulted in good signal-to-noise ratio (~10 3 ), energy resolution of ~10 eV at 10 keV, EXAFS spectra covering 100s of eV, and good pulse to pulse reproducibility of our single pulse measurements. Ambient EXAFS spectra for Cu and Au are compared to reference spectra, validating our measurement system. Comparison of single pulse EXAFS results for ambient and laser shocked Ge(100) shows large changes to the local structure of the short lived state of shocked Ge. The current DCS EXAFS capability can be used to perform single pulse measurements in laser shocked materials from approximately 9-13 keV. These EXAFS developments will be available to all users of the DCS.

Spin dynamics in antiferromagnetic oxypnictides and fluoropnictides: LaMnAsO, LaMnSbO, and BaMnAsF

In this study, inelastic neutron scattering (INS) from polycrystalline antiferromagnetic LaMnAsO, LaMnSbO, and BaMnAsF are analyzed using a J 1 - J 2 - J c Heisenberg model in the framework of the linear spin-wave theory. All three systems show clear evidence that the nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions within the Mn square lattice layer ( J 1 and J 2 ) are both antiferromagnetic (AFM). However, for all compounds studied the competing interactions have a ratio of 2 J 2 / J 1 < 1 , which favors the square lattice checkerboard AFM structure over the stripe AFM structure. The interplane coupling J c in all three systems is on the order of ~ 3 × 10 - 4 J 1 , rendering the magnetic properties of these systems with quasi-two-dimensional character. The substitution of Sb for As significantly lowers the in-plane exchange coupling, which is also reflected in the decrease of the Néel temperature, T N . Although BaMnAsF shares the same MnAs sheets as LaMnAsO, their J 1 and J 2 values are substantially different. Lastly, using density functional theory, we calculate exchange parameters J i j to rationalize the differences among these systems.
