Compositional and phase dependence of elastic modulus of crystalline and amorphous Hf 1- x Zr x O 2 thin films

The elastic moduli of amorphous and crystalline atomic layer-deposited Hf 1-x Zr x O 2 (HZO, x = 0, 0.31, 0.46, 0.79, 1) films prepared with TaN electrodes on silicon substrates were investigated using picosecond acoustic measurements. The moduli of the amorphous films were observed to increase between 211 ± 6 GPa for pure HfO 2 and 302 ± 9 GPa for pure ZrO 2 . In the crystalline films, it was found that the moduli increased upon increasing the zirconium composition from 248 ± 6 GPa for monoclinic HfO 2 to 267 ± 9 GPa for tetragonal ZrO 2 . Positive deviations from this increase were observed for the Hf 0.69 Zr 0.31 O 2 and Hf 0.54 Zr 0.46 O 2 compositions, which were measured to have moduli of 264 ± 8 GPa and 274 ± 8 GPa, respectively. These two compositions contained the largest fractions of the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase, as assessed from polarization and diffraction data. The biaxial stress states of the crystalline films were characterized through sin 2 (ψ) x-ray diffraction analysis. The in-plane stresses were all found to be tensile and observed to increase with the increasing zirconium composition, between 2.54 ± 0.6 GPa for pure HfO 2 and 5.22 ± 0.5 GPa for pure ZrO 2 . The stresses are consistent with large thermal expansion mismatches between the HZO films and silicon substrates. Furthermore, these results demonstrate a device-scale means to quantify biaxial stress for investigation on its effect on the ferroelectric properties of hafnia-based materials.

Role of Axial Ligation in Gating the Reactivity of Dimethylplatinum(III) Diimine Radical Cations

Electrochemical methods are coupled with chemical oxidant-based analytical strategies to evaluate the oxidative reactivity of the platinum(II) diimine complex (bpy)Pt II (CH 3 ) 2 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) in coordinating and non-coordinating media. Through this mechanistic analysis, we show that the one-electron oxidation of (bpy)Pt II (CH 3 ) 2 generates a highly reactive, 15-electron Pt III radical cation and identify three reaction pathways that can follow this oxidation: radical–substrate dimerization, radical-radical dimerization, and oxidative disproportionation. Axial ligation of the initially generated [(bpy)Pt III (CH 3 ) 2 ] •+ species is a critical driver of this reactivity, gating the available mechanistic pathways and tuning the competition between radical–radical dimerization and oxidative disproportionation.

Charge-Separated and Lewis Paired Metal–Organic Framework for Anion Exchange and CO 2 Chemical Fixation

Charge-separated metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a unique class of MOFs that can possess added properties originating from the exposed ionic species. A new charge-separated MOF, namely, UNM-6 synthesized from a tetrahedral borate ligand and Co 2+ cation is reported in this paper. UNM-6 crystalizes into the highly symmetric P43n space group with fourfold interpenetration, despite the stoichiometric imbalance between the B and Co atoms, which also leads to loosely bound NO 3 – anions within the crystal structure. These NO 3 – ions can be quantitatively exchanged with various other anions, leading to Lewis acid (Co 2+ ) and Lewis base (anions) pairs within the pores and potentially cooperative catalytic activities. For example, UNM-6-Br, the MOF after anion exchange with Br – anions, displays high catalytic activity and stability in reactions of CO 2 chemical fixation into cyclic carbonates.

Preparation of cyclohexene isotopologues and stereoisotopomers from benzene

The hydrogen isotopes deuterium (D) and tritium (T) have become essential tools in chemistry, biology and medicine1. Beyond their widespread use in spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and mechanistic and pharmacokinetic studies, there has been considerable interest in incorporating deuterium into drug molecules1. Deutetrabenazine, a deuterated drug that is promising for the treatment of Huntington’s disease2, was recently approved by the United States’ Food and Drug Administration. The deuterium kinetic isotope effect, which compares the rate of a chemical reaction for a compound with that for its deuterated counterpart, can be substantial1,3,4. The strategic replacement of hydrogen with deuterium can affect both the rate of metabolism and the distribution of metabolites for a compound5, improving the efficacy and safety of a drug. The pharmacokinetics of a deuterated compound depends on the location(s) of deuterium. Although methods are available for deuterium incorporation at both early and late stages of the synthesis of a drug6,7, these processes are often unselective and the stereoisotopic purity can be difficult to measure7,8. Here we describe the preparation of stereoselectively deuterated building blocks for pharmaceutical research. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate a four-step conversion of benzene to cyclohexene with varying degrees of deuterium incorporation, via binding to a tungsten complex. Using different combinations of deuterated and proteated acid and hydride reagents, the deuterated positions on the cyclohexene ring can be controlled precisely. In total, 52 unique stereoisotopomers of cyclohexene are available, in the form of ten different isotopologues. This concept can be extended to prepare discrete stereoisotopomers of functionalized cyclohexenes. Such systematic methods for the preparation of pharmacologically active compounds as discrete stereoisotopomers could improve the pharmacological and toxicological properties of drugs and provide mechanistic information related to their distribution and metabolism in the body.
